As the footy season is not too far away, us Mods feel we ought to ask you guys about our board - whether they be grievances or just ideas. Although we of course can't implement everything suggested, we will discuss your ideas seriously behind closed doors (you don't really want to know what goes on there).

Also, it's been a year or so since we implemented the player watch threads on our main board, and although we believe they have been a success, further feedback would be more than valuable.

Cheers,
Essendon Mod team - Kong, LN, Sosa, Yoda_, TB :)

Probably not your fault, but I've noticed some of the player watch threads go missing on Tapatalk.

Other than that, no real complaints, though it wouldnt hurt to keep UTG out of our board :p

Player watch threads on the main board are a fantastic idea and have worked well all year I think.

Yep. If I want to discuss a certain player first thing I will do is look for the Player Watch thread - something I would not have done when they were on their own sub forum.

I have no complaints, I think the board is currently functioning better than it has in my time here.

One of the better run boards, as far as I can tell. The player watch threads have been a great inclusion, and whilst it's worth noting that humans will be humans and we do go off track, they're the spot you go to straight away to find info about a certain player.

Mods always happy to lay down the law to opposition flogs is a nice thing to see, too.

This is a question I've always found difficult to grapple with: How lenient should you be with opposition supporters?

You don't want to be over the top, but you also don't want to be too welcoming of nonsense, considering after all it is a sanctuary for Essendon supporters. Still, I'm sure there's nothing worse than going to another team's board with something constructive and getting banned, leaving a bitter taste. Have we got the balance right?

One thing I don't particularly like is opposition supporters coming into the Delusional Pearlers thread. I would like to see that remain an Essendon Only thread, reason being it is for us to talk about poor opposition opinions. The only opposition supporters that post in there do so to validate their own opinion, thus starting arguments.

Other than that I think the mods on this board are very fair and receptive of opposition supporters.

If they come in for a bit of banter before a game it isn't so bad, provided they stick to a banter thread.

Otherwise if they come hear just to slag off Essendon/claim the greatness that is Norf, then get them to bugger off.

As the bloke that started that thread, I'd say I'm happy for opposition supporters to get in on it. Particularly when we quote posts of theirs. As long as the mods keep a relatively tight rein (ie. posters like DOP, UtG) on those that are clearly just being trolls doesn't stress me out.

No complaints at all from me.

I think the change in the nature of the player threads took a little while to adjust to initially, but I think it works a treat now.

As for opposition supporters- I am firmly opposed to any "Essendon only" thread. Remember, we tried it once last year and after about a week, the thread died because there is really very little you can talk about. I mean, there isn't much honour in potting opposition supporters in a thread where they don't at least have the right of reply, is there?

As for the pearlers thread, opposition supporters should have the right to explain something or defend themselves, or qualify their statement which we've put in there. As long as the discussion remains civil, I see no problem with that.

What should not be allowed is opposition supporters coming in here (and there are really only two I can think of who do it), sometimes bumping the thread and posting something like "wow you boys are game leaving this going after you lost your last seven games lolzz". Anyone who does that should be given their marching orders and a shiny card with it, IMO, because it adds nothing to the discussion and is just blatant trolling.

Yeah I guess these two posts sum it up best.

Doss, that thread will be the North preview thread every year when the moron brigade invade.

One suggestion I have is for the player watch titles to just become "#6 - Joe Daniher" once the subtitle becomes irrelevant. In other words, have the subtitles when there's news or a good comment like the hair surgery, but once that wears off, just return to a default title until the next one appears.

Yep, I know. I remember the lead-up to the second game last year well. No tolerance policy is the go here, IMO.

If it were simple to temporarily give the worst trouble makers temporary board bans in the lead-up and aftermath, I'd advocate that, but I understand that it needs to go through admin, which is a pain in the arse for our mods.

But all jokes aside, we're keen to hear from all frequenters on any issues.

If you've got an issue, please raise it, as it may be that there are plenty of others who have similar feelings.

That's the only issue I have :)

Agree with this. Too many times I came on to see it say someone was injured, thinking it was a recent subtitle.

A concern over the Player Watch threads were:

1) Cluttered the board too much
2) Made it too difficult to keep up on threads
3) Limited the scope for individual topics on the same players

Is this still the case?
I don't think so. The search function actually doesn't do a bad job, if you're looking for a particular player thread just type in their number and name, and you're there.

Much ado about nothing, as The Weapon a great man once said.

To start off with the threads were annoying to keep up with but it's much better being able to find all the latest news and discussion about a player in one place, especially when you click the link and it takes you to your last read post. Though I do think that the conversation tends to only go in the one direction and makes it harder to have a variety of discussion points.

the main problem with opposition posters is that when they offer criticism of an essendon figure, i find there's a tendency from a minority of essendon users to just deride the poster, particularly if the poster is a bit of an unknown user, and that shouldn't really be accepted. obv if they troll, get rid of them. but anybody offering valid criticism, and as a result good discussion, should be welcomed with open arms, and sometimes that can be criticism you don't want to hear, but that doesn't give you a right to attack the poster...

the mods clean it up in the end tho so it's more of a self regulation issue i guess.

opposition posters are fine. assuming they following the basic rules of being a human being. but then i do stay away from the threads that are certain to attract dickhead behaviour.

It's done well IMO.

My only request is to sticky the week-by-week preview threads (which I'll try to continue this year) and the matchday thread on the day of the match. IMO they're the two most important threads of the week. But that's just my 2c

The whole sticky thing is interesting, because we know stickied threads for whatever reason do not attract as much attention and are skimmed over. Would you like us to trial it?

I think people are more likely to skim over stickied threads if there are too many of them.

We currently have five, is that too many? Perhaps. Looking at the sticky ones right now:

1) My sponsorship thread can probably be unstickied as the 'fundraising' campaign is essentially over, and I'm posting in it enough to keep it on the front page or thereabouts anyway.

2) 'Official list changes 2012' can probably be unstickied too- list changes for 2012/13 are complete, so no real need for it now.

3) The others are probably needed where they are

But even that reduces the number to three, and I think a sticky stands out by default more if there are less of them.

Just my two cents.

I think match day and preview threads would be the exceptions to that.

For myself this board is great one I'm quite happy to be a part of. For what it's worth I say no to any strictly essendon supporter threads. I like being able to read different supporter views without havin to sift through trolls on the main board or other boards.

these are my thoughts as well. Get them front and centre. Sometimes the preview thread get to the bottom of the page and people just don't scroll that far down
