Board support for Blues CEO
2:14:37 PM Wed 25 October, 2006
Sportal for afl.com.au

The Carlton board has reaffirmed its support for the club's chief executive Michael Malouf.

In a media release on Wednesday, Carlton president Graham Smorgon said: "The position of the CEO was reviewed as part of our overall review of the operations of the club and I am pleased to confirm that Michael Malouf has been strongly supported by the board."

"Michael has provided outstanding leadership in his role as CEO since he joined the club from the Melbourne City Council in July 2003, the toughest period in the history of the Carlton Football Club.

"During this time he has managed some of the biggest decisions in the club's history and has implemented a business plan that has provided the platform to rebuild the Carlton Football Club as we go forward."

Good or Bad???
I think he has made some good decisions in tough times, what do you think?

Good. Why anyone would leave a cushy job managing the Melbourne City Council to deal with such a highly charged, emotional business as a wooden-spoon football club I have no idea, but I'm grateful he has. That deal for the ground redevelopment probably came via his connections as much as anything else, and I'm pretty confident in his ability to see and address problems.

Whether he has the resources to solve everything is another matter.

Now where's Blue Thunder these days? 28th September:

Only time will tell, but I can say this: I actually feel like the club is heading in the right direction, something that I haven't been able to say in some time.

Yeah, I have to agree with you HBF. Its amazing what a bit of backbone at the trade table and a couple of assistant coaches can do.

When is the challange coming?
This is just getting pathetic.
Want to expand on that Surrey? Do you have a problem with anybody at the club being retained or with Malouf generally? Some are getting upset about everything at the moment, like we should be advocating change for the sake of change. If AlecDuncan's thoughts on Malouf's contacts assisting with the ground redevelopment, that is a massive plus for Malouf ... surely?

The board support for Malouf, plus the retention of Barry Mitchell further demonstrates how the club is putting all the petty squabbles behind it and going forward as a unified entity. The easy option would have been not to renew Mitchell's contract and jot out the line that he and Pagan could not work together anymore. Instead the club is making sure that we have the best available people at our disposal, as we continue our rebuilding both on and off the field.

To all the doomsayers in the media and anyone else who has been hoping that the Carlton Football Club would continue to consume itself, it is time to go elsewhere for your headlines. Our club is ready to move forward and we will be taking no prisoners along the way.

Still here AD. The fact that he has been supported by the board does not change the fact that there is a strong sentiment from some influential people in the club that they dont want him there.

Personally I couldnt care a less as I dont think Malouf has done much wrong in his time there but I will certainly post information that I know is close to the mark - regardless of whether it eventuates or not.

Let me say this though, the decision will rile some people and will only provide further incentive for some factions to continue to push for board change. The rival ticket is currently tossing up 2 options... a). either go for a complete ticket to challenge the current board, or b). Negotiate with the board a number of changes.

One of the influential people involved in this could certainly be regarded as a GAMBLER!

Personally I dont think that there will be a challange now from Brown.

The club is putting behind it all the petty squabbling of the last couple of weeks, months and years and is starting to take more positive steps forward.

The biggest positive step forward that I can think of is getting in Ratts and Bradley as assistant coaches with the aim of Ratts taking over in 2 years when Pagen finishes his contract.

I think that not backing down on T-Bird and Russell and bringing in some new coaching staff has convinced Brown that the club is starting to move forward again and hopefully he will instead of wasting his money in paying out Pagen's contract, put the money into the club to reduce our debt or to help cover the costs of maintaining Princes Park until we are debt free again.

Code for Bruce Matheson perhaps? Hmm, let me think about that one.

The chances of a board spill are getting smaller every week. If there are no blunders on draft day and we snare a PSD coup then the chances drop to zero. However, I'm sure that if David Pratt put his hand up for a board position, he'd get it. At this stage, don't expect regime change.

BTW, I should point out that my post about Malouf's connections helping in the ground redevelopment is just supposition on my part - I have no special inside running. Familiarity and mutual respect are the oils that grease the wheels of industry though, so it only goes to reason that his connections would be a factor.

ODN,
What should have happened now:
The whole board apart from 1 or 2 who haven't had time to show their worth should have gone at the end of 2006.
The whole coaching panel (including Pagan) should have voluntarily stood down for the incompetence shown over the past 2 years.
Whole sale changes to the playing list should be undertaken THIS YEAR.

What needs to be done next year and beyond:
Pay the AFL loan back. No ifs buts or maybe's. Influential supporters are willing.
Get a board that has "positive" marketing experience and let that flow down through the whole club. WE HAVE BEEN NEGATIVE for tooo long ... well since COLLO took control. I still cringe at the player list statements.:o
Get some "old" Navy Blue spirit back into the club from top to bottom and make the players play for the jumper and "believe" in themselves. The rest will come.

Carlton have never been "pathetic losers" because the word wasn't allowed to be used inside our club corridors .... once you open yourself up to this philosophy/belief .... well the rest is history as they say.:thumbsd:

Why is the democratic process continually being altered to suit those on the board?

The Blues were on the verge of offering Mitchell the senior coaching position but opted to honour the remaining two years of Pagan's contract.
More Chinese wispers.............next Mitchell will have been offerred the job but have turned it down.

Its a shame that after such a positive month, there are those who have nothing but self importance as their agenda and continue to agitate.
Does anyone seriously believe that a complete spill now, or even worse in December or March FFS will be in the best interest of the club next year?

Spot on AD.

Personally I hope that there is no real bloodletting coup, and this is the intention I believe. However this would only be based on the current board accepting some changes that will be put forward.

It is going to be interesting but I think by the start of next season all will be sorted out and we can then expect a long period of stability. Not unlike the turmoil the club went through in 1980!

Hah! Yeah, hard to believe we had such acrimonious division - in a premiership year! Proof that you don't need a wooden spoon for people to get upset about how a club is run.

More lazy journalism. "Sources said", "it is understood", "are believed". How easy is it to be a journalist? What happened to speaking to real people?

Since the end of the home & away season so many predictions have been made by the media about what is going to take place at the Carlton Football Club and time and time again they are being proven wrong. Unless statements/quotes are attributed to someone with a name, they are not worth reading.

Very true. Anyway the club looks as though it is starting to get on the right track and it doesnt take long to get back in the hunt when you have a couple of years of good draft picks, just look at the Bulldogs and Tigers. Good signs in 2007.
