I will tell you right now that Eade was never going to and will never coach AFC. If it came down to Eade and Craig, I am for Craig all the way. Just absolutely LOATHE the way Eade coaches.

I reckon Wallace is just about signed, sealed and delivered as Hawks coach

This is a world class post for the sole reason it is the god's honest truth and exposes the club for the sham it has become.

We (meaning the club and supporter base as a whole) like to think the Adelaide Football Club is a heavyhitter in the realms of AFL football. We're loaded. We've the largest membership base in the league. We've already got 2 shiny pots (and a wok) sitting in the trophy cabinet and we've got a Brownlow Medallist on the honourboard.

But...

When it comes to truly flexing our muscle and converting this wealth and flourishing tradition into sheer power what do we actually do?

We behave like a tinpot ramshackle operation where ridiculous decisions are taken and embarassing statements are made - and this has been the case since the final siren blew on the 2002 season.

Be it appalling trades and recruiting, poor player management, fanciful and over-optimistic statements to the press and then the inevitable backpedalling ("we're not ageing... that's nonsense... the media don't know... we were just unlucky with results and injuries... we're a top 4 club... erm... we're a top 8 club... erm... we're not as good as we thought we were... erm... we sacked Gary because our past couple of seasons were very disappointing... we're remodelling...") the club has hardly covered itself in glory on and off the field in the past 18 months.

And now, in one of the most crucial periods of the club's short life, instead of being cut-throat and going our hardest for the very best coaching candidate out there, we've got a bizarre situation where the interim coach is auditioning for the job while at the same time trying to blood youngsters - with Terry Wallace, Rodney Eade, Gary O'Donnell and Mark Harvey all seemingly at a disadvantage in the whole process.

Has Neil secretly been given the nod?
Does the club plan to legitimately advertise the position?

When Eddie McGuire took over at Collingwood he turned them from a laughing stock into a force almost immediately - he used the immense resources of the club to go and get Mick Malthouse, the best available coach there was, and he used the massive Collingwood brand name to bring in a vast array of lucrative sponsorships. So what's stopping us from headhunting someone? Or going and getting the best available uncontracted candidate? What's stopping us from being great again? We just keep going backwards - and noone at West Lakes seems to have the requisite vision or nous to prevent the slide.

Quite simply, we don't look like the professional colossus we are - we look like act 2 on Red Faces.

Neil Craig? Bill Sanders? Steven Trigg? John Reid? James Fantasia? Mark Mickan? Peter Curran? Hayden Skipworth?

Agreed.

Much like the Kingsley at port. He shed some muscle, might not be the quickest player alive when he was a bit heavier, but now he shed some.. he is getting a lot lot better.

McGough has played 32 games. Lots of room to grow.

Excellent post DT, and the comparison with Collingwood is a damn good one.

This is how it's done professionally in business at the highest level. Identify the man who is the best available for the position and go get him - head-hunting.

That's how Malthouse was appointed.

In stark contrast, I find our dithering Craig based approach an embarrassment. Just hang in there long enough until all the genuine candidates have been appointed elsewhere and then we are left with our man.

The one saviour we might have, and it's only a slim one, is that a few of the AFC directors are not liking what they have seen as much as they thought they would, and are insisting that Wallace be put into the mix.

Let's just hope it's not too late.

But in all seriousness, yes Kingers has improved a great deal - in the same vein regarding improvement, I still don't understand how certain people can write off McGough so easily when he's younger and has shown far more than some of the players they're pumping up - Doughty, Reilly, Skipworth, Rutten.

What gives?!

As for Reilly and Doughty...Doughty is better than McGough so far, Doughty has more pace, cleaner hands and better disposal.

Reilly, so far, looks like he will be better.

I added Rutten because he is older and has done far less that McGough in his career so far, regardless of what position he plays and McGough doesn't - It's hypocritical that you denigrate McGough out of hand but loudly push Doughty and Rutten's barrow.

I have always held the view that the AFC is very honourable, moralistic, corporately correct and very professional.

In summary we're a "nice" club.

On the other hand Port Adelaide, ruthless calculating (see N.Stevens) and successful.

The point on Collingwood is excellent - Eddie new who is best, no sub committee, just get the best!

This problem existed in the SANFL (rest of clubs) V Pt Adelaide. Port ruthless agressive and successful, the rest chipped in for leftovers.

Why?

I'll say it again - McGough has only just turned 20 yet averages 18.55dpg in a poor side while suffering the ill-effects of OP (for the information of those who decry his lack of pace).

It's all very well to have an opinion on players, but please, can you begin giving yours based on the actual talent and ability of a player rather than just their looks, how they've treated you when you've bumped into them or because of the club they play for?

id trade skipworth in a heartbeat for mcgough, atleast then you would get someone willing to put there body in the packs, someone who at 20 averages 18.55 disposals, this is because he goes and gets the footy himself and thats what i like about him, id trade doughty for him too... dogga is 25 and still really isnt tearing games apart. McGough would benefit coming accross to us, we are known for our fitness programmes something collingwobbles arent.. just ask Aker. If he got fitter, he has the potential to be a quicker runner as well and could be a vital part to our midfield if collingwood wanted to trade him to us

Skippy is still developing, and I know that McGough is too, but if he is 20 and as good as you say he is, why would Collingwood get rid of him?
And, like I already said, Collingwood would want something for him, something which I don't believe we would want to go giving away for him, considering our recent trades.

Bode has barely had a chance this year and when he did against the bulldogs i think he was near BOG. Unlucky to be injured at the moment, but he will become a regular. we cant go over board and drop or trade every midfielder we have.

Yes. Everyone's developing. Some players quicker than others. McGough is lightyears ahead of Skipworth in ability and potential and this is borne out by statistical fact - he is also far younger and is producing far more than the inconsistent and injury-niggled Bode.

Why would Collingwood want to get rid of him? We don't know if they do. It was "The Lonie Range" who proposed the hypothetical trade in exchange for Bode - as I said, if we offered that trade in reality at tradeweek Collingwood's representatives would laugh their heads off before telling us where to go.

That's why I can't understand why so many on this thread (although the non-Crows fans have agreed with me) are adverse to the idea.

In your previous posts you've suggested McGough is about as valuable as another Schell or Scott Stevens (which is frankly ridiculous) - now you're saying he's so valuable as the Pies would ask too much for him? Which one is it?

Bode's been inconsistent and insipid for a good season and a half now. His disposal is questionable - never straightens up - and his position at this football club must be questioned. One of the reasons we're performing as poorly as we are at the minute is because we've repeatedly overrated our players and rested on our laurels - case in point the club and the majority of the supporters believing us to be a "top-4 club" when the rest of the league and interstate journos had us struggling to make the eight.

Remember we traded a first round pick (Shaun Burgoyne) to Port Adelaide to acquire Bode. He has done nothing to suggest he was ever worth that much - despite his decent 2002 season - which was a long long time ago.

Earlier this season while still 19yo, McGough had 29 possies against Essendon, 33 against Port Adelaide...

Skipworth is averaging 12.1 disposals this season.

its great and all you love Hayden, but honestly dont open your mouth when it comes to footy because you are totally clueless! McGough is in a whole different league to skipworth

McGough has an "AFL body" one that is big enough and strong enough to put over the footy and not get knocked off it! Skipworth doesnt, he is honestly too small for AFL, i consider myself to be a pretty average bloke, about 180 cm n 73kgs and i stood next to him the other night when i saw him out and he is smaller than me and didnt seem to have that much muscle and honestly all he is is a good SANFL player, his one of the blokes on our list that isnt upto AFL level, with body, skill and even footy brain.

If we could trade skipworth and maybe even a 3rd or 4th round pick to get McGough i think the adelaide football club would take it and then go and laugh at the collingwood recruiters!
