I usually read these forums with a detachment, just reading peoples opinions.
Dont usually like to bag umpires but tonight pissed me off both ways.
I just thing the game(s) would be better if the umpires went back to the 70's/80's and used there interpretations....
Discuss?

Thought they were pretty good actually. The missed holding the ball in the pocket was the only glaring mistake I can think of.

I thought they were pretty ordinary both ways, but I'm not in a good place to comment. They missed some obvious ones and played some real cheap ones.

I thought it was one of the better umpired games of the year. There were a couple of soft free kicks, but I hardly even noticed the umpires at all.

Hille copped a poor decision when rucking at the centre bounce. The bounce was poor and the ball drifted his way. He just held his ground and Roughead couldn't get to the drop and Hille was penalised for preventing his run. All his did was hold his ground. Such a harsh decision when in the middle of the ground.

They need to stop being so precious, how many players got pinged for "demonstrative, you were being demonstrative, please don't be so demonstrative" tonight?

Agree. That was crap. No way it deserved a shot on goal.

Hear, hear. I closely examined that and it didn't look like he was using harsh language or confrontational at all. More just frustrated than anything.

Another typically shit display of umpiring.

We've got serious problems in our game at the moment.

Why do umpires refuse to pay the obvious free kicks? And yet, the next second, they pay some little technical rubbish that had no real affect on the play?

Was constant all night. Both ways.

I thought the umpiring was slightly pedantic, and we got the slight rub of the green...but nothing drastic. The 'demonstrative' free against the Bombers in the goalsquare was soft, but the one against Hille would be given most times, I think..

Last Sunday was ten times worse. Number 24 had to have the worst umpiring performance by an ump ever with the crazy calls he was giving

At no stage did I find myself thinking "geez this umpiring is shit", so I can't see any problem with the umpiring. Probably one of the best Essendon umpired games for the year.

When the game is over half way through the first quarter I don't think neutral supporters pay much attention to the umpiring.

Hilles free for in the pocket should have been play on. Hilles free against in the middle should have been play on.

I agree, however, there is no reason for a player to talk to an umpire, they are not going to change their mind. Just give the ball over and get on with the game.

When i played rugby you'd always say
"What was that for sir? Ah hands in the ruck sir? Thankyou for punishing me sir? Good call sir" Then you'd go pack to the line and mutter, "tosser"
As a cricket umpire id never change my opinion but im not precious enough to get upset when people question me i just say "That was how i saw it and thats my decision"

Does anyone else find that sometimes when there's a shocking bounce umpires sometimes pay an inexplicable free rather than admitting they ****ed up and calling it back for a throw up?

Your're right for the most part, but there were more shockers go against Essendon. If it was closer on the scoreboard you'd be right to be pissed.

How about we went back to the '70's with todays technology, amount of cameras and endless slo-mo replays, would the umpiring really look any better?

People need to get over umpiring.

Only problem was their tendency to let the Hawthorn forwards get away with whatever they liked, in terms of tackling and holding defenders without the footy. Though they did pick up one or two, which is better than usual I guess.

I hate that it seems I'm actually calling for more frees to be paid, but when teams blatantly 'push the boundaries', it has to be done.

I assume you hate how Joel Selwood 'pushes the boundries'.
