Who will replace Bomber if he goes? I think we should offer Pagan the job as things aren't going to well at Carlton in regards to the boards opinion of him and the clubs performance. Pagan has the no-**** attitude that we want. Bombey simply isn't right for the club, he is good at rebuilding a club but not at winning finals which ultimately is all that matters. If it's not Pagan then who?

O'Donnel Bond Harvey

hmmmm I am not that sure about Hocking (if you mean Buhdda) - I don't think his record in the WAFL was that good, and also he will never come to the club while his brother is on the match committee.

Pagan POSSIBLE - but I doubt he would come
Creswell YES - has shown his ability at our club - but is not an option
Hocking NO - has no real senior experience or track record - hasn't got a good record at a lower level - would be a massive mistake
Harvey NO - has yet to prove himself - how do we really know how well he will perform - way too risky - let some other team blood him
O Donnell NO - same as Harvey
Carey NO - same again

I don't think we want someone UNPROVEN

Others?

Hocking is doing good things at Falcons, they r second on the ladder currently.

Creswell.
I'm against appointing former players unless they come from an era of success, and unfortunately Bobby Davis is too old. Four GF losses doesn't count as enough success.
The form of the midfield this year reflects just how good Creswell was for us; he know the culture and what makes the players tick.
For the chance to be a senior coach, surely he and his wife could work something out - after all, how long does he wait for the Brisbane job and would he automatically get it? Avalon to Brisbane is a pretty easy (and cheap) flight.

Going out on a limb here -

Lets keep Bomber - Here's why -

First premiership win of any kind in 43 years - against a very, very good side at their home ground.

Thompson's strength is the way he relates to players and develops the young players. This is still a young squad - and with Varcoe, Hawkins and another young talented player joining next year - a coach who develops players is important for at least one more year.

He's got a contract. I know this might seem corny - but I think that the fact that Geelong is not like Richmond or other clubs that sack coaches is to be admired.

The most important thing to me is that Thompson wants the job and has belief. If he doesn't, then I think he'll fall on his sword. If he does - one more year. My gut feeling is that if we change now none of the other coaches likely to be on offer would do better next year.

Ayres and now Thompson have been a big success in that regard yeah?

Maybe it's time they had a coach who still bleeds from not gaining any success as a player than someone that arrives from a Hawthorn/Essendon dynasty and expects it will just happen.

Not I believe Garry Hocking is in any way a suitable option, mind.

Fair enough, but I totally disagree. Thompson relates well to them because he'd rather be their friend than crack the whip at the selection table. How the hell did Steve Johnson AND James Kelly both retain their places? As for developing young players, he has developed exactly ZERO key forwards in his entire tenure at Geelong. How's that for a record?

Your point about honouring the contract is well intentioned, but to be honest I couldn't care less. Brisbane sacked a coach in 1998 and held the Premiership Cup (the real one) aloft 3 years later. Tough decisions often lead to success. Weak decisions to please everyone rarely do.

I'm with you Partridge.

I just don't see any benefit in keeping Thompson for another year. He has proven to us that he just doesn't know how to turn things around when they are going bad, he often waits for things to sort themselves out. Not good enough. We are now consistently loses games that we should be flogging the opposition in. This was happening last year as well!

He is still "at a loss" about what went wrong in Canberra. Even with match tapes and hindsight he can't work out the bleeding obvious so things will never change. This is not the sort of coach that will be taking Geelong any further anytime soon.

I appreciate what he has done but I'm also willing to take the gamble on appointing a new (even untested) coach as aposed to sticking with a bloke who is a proven failure. I for one couldn't handle seeing another year like this in 07 knowing that we could have made positive changes over the summer to rectify the issues.

I agree.

Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, there are a lot of similarities between us now and Brisbane in 1998/1999, right down to the last missing piece in the premiership puzzle - a big powerful key forward - coming via F/S at the end of the year.

I honestly believe our real premiership window is 2008-2010, and that unless we f**k it up with bad trading, recruiting and coaching personnel decisions we'll be right up there during that time.

Garry Lyon, Robert Shaw, Dennis Pagan or Don Pyke.

Don Pyke - I'd take a punt on him. Fresh input, and not too long out of the game.

Robert Shaw - Reluctantly. Been out of senior coaching a while now and never achieved success.

Denis Pagan - No way. Alleged "master coach" is about to claim his 3rd wooden spoon in 5 years, at a club that had never finished last in their entire history.

Garry Lyon - Egomaniac. Wouldn't have the guts to put himself in a position to be proved wrong. Absolutely no guarantee he'd be any good anyway.

I'm pretty sure Wayne Brittain coached Carlton to a spoon pre-Pagan ;)

Pagan is past it and I don't want him at Geelong. I want an innovative and tough coach who can bring us success. I hoped Bomber could do it.

He was so full of aspiration when he started but now he appears drained and the team is reflecting his appearance.

Cleadly doesn't anymore. I think he's clearly over it, and is waiting until the end of the year to leave with some sort of grace.

Yep, only 5 more weeks of Bomber.
