You beauty!!!!!!

Long overdue. Hopefully the great man can make the most of this opportunity.

You beauty!!!!!

It will make coming home for the Second Test that bit more special. :D

Well done Boof - a fine upstanding Central District supporter.
Great to see him back in the side, a deserved opportunity, let's hope he gets the chance to make himself comfortable and score that elusive debut test hundred.
Bad luck Mark, but time waits for no man.
I've always been a fan of Mark, especially after seeing his century on debut, but it was time for him to finish.
Let's hope he's not too bitter about it.

Was thinking the same thing!

I think they made the right decision, albeit about 2 years too late. I can't see Lehmann not making plenty of runs.

Totally agree - about time...Mark Waugh has been nursed along for far too long!!

Can't wait for the second test at Adelaide Oval.

Bad luck to Mark Waugh - but it was his time to go.

It's like replacing one middle aged player with another one..what are the selectors doing? Have we run out of all the youth in this country:mad:

They'll probably go for a youthful batsman when Steve Waugh retires, most likely at the end of the Ashes series.

I presume the selectors that to blood two new Australian batsmen in a short space of time is unnecessary - instead they'll probably replace the Waughs with a mixture of experience and youth.

Official Media Release....

Twelve-man squad announced for first Orange Test
Australian Cricket Board - 28 October 2002

http://www-aus.cricket.org/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2002/OCT/081212_ACB_28OCT2002.html

Australian Cricket Board (ACB) Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland today announced that the National Selection Panel (NSP) has chosen a 12-man squad for the first Orange Test match against England, beginning in Brisbane on 7 November.

The squad is:

STEPHEN WAUGH (Captain)
ADAM GILCHRIST (Vice-captain)
ANDREW BICHEL
JASON GILLESPIE (subject to fitness)
MATTHEW HAYDEN
JUSTIN LANGER
BRETT LEE
DARREN LEHMANN
DAMIEN MARTYN
GLENN MCGRATH
RICKY PONTING
SHANE WARNE

Prolific Southern Redbacks batsman Darren Lehmann replaces Mark Wuagh in the side that claimed victory by an innings and 20 runs in the third match of the recent Travelex Tour against Pakistan.

Lehmann, a regular member of the Australian one-day international side, was part of the Australian Test squad for the 2002 Travelex Tours of South Africa and Pakistan.

A three-time winner of the State Player of the Year Award at the Allan Border Medal presentation, the 32-year-old is the leading run-scorer in the history of Australian first-class cricket, having surpassed Jamie Siddons' record (11,587 runs) in December 2001.

The left-hander has played five Tests for Australia, the last of which was against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 1999.

Upon learning of his selection, Lehmann said:

"I am obviously sad for Mark who has been such a great player for Australia for so many years but at the same time I am delighted and very grateful to get another chance at Test level.

"This is the perfect lift for me personally after a disappointing few days for the Southern Redbacks.

"Although it's been four years since my last Test, I never gave up hope of getting back and I thought I was close after being picked on the last two Test tours.

"I have obviously seen a lot of the English bowlers by playing for Yorkshire over the last few years and hopefully I can use that experience to our advantage in Brisbane," he said.

Jason Gillespie is continuing to recover from the strain to his right calf muscle suffered in the first Test of the Travelex Tour against Pakistan. He is expected to play for the Southern Redbacks in their ING Cup match against the New South Wales Blues on Saturday 2 November at the Adelaide Oval.

Exactly. If there was someone who was a standout, they would have gone for him. Clarke didn't have enough experience, Katich is out of form, Maher is more an opener, and I'm not sure what they would be thinking of Love. Lehmann is good for a couple of seasons, then hopefully someone young will be ready to replace him.

S.Waugh will probably retire at end of ashes, which buys the selectors a bit of time to really see which youngster stands up. Or maybe Elliott or Bevan will get a go?;)

They probably kept him in the squad because they probably don't believe there is anyone better (outside of the squad) on bouncy pitches. They might think that a home series might enable him to regain a bit of confidence. Even though he is in the squad, I would say that Bichel will get the nod for the 1st test. Hopefully Lee isn't 12th man so he can play some Pura Cup or club cricket or something.

Bichel will definetly play ahead of Lee, especially in Brisbane. Hauritz will play in Adelaide (Well I would play him). Glad to see Lehmann in BUT i just wonder about his form (or lack of it) Did not play in the Pak series ,hardly got a hit in the One-day series preceeding it. 2 failures in the Shield Game and only 1 more one-day game before the first test is hardly great preparation. Should have gone with Clarke. Runs AND form on the board. Didnt Dean Jones test career effectively end when he had little or no cricket going into the WI series (1992 I think), and didnt he not score an unbeaten 60-odd in his last test match just a few months before.

Dean Jones didn't hold his knife and fork the correct way.

Poor Deano, all he saw was a white blur when Curtly bowled to him :D

Great news for boof, should have 3-4 years of International Cricket in him hopefully!

Dean Jones was so self-obsessed and up himself that the rest of the team were glad to see the back of him.

Actually occurred after he was dropped from the Test side. I think his reasoning for it was that Curtly's white sweatbands clashed with the white ball.

As for Dean Jones being self-obsessed, I've heard plenty over the years to suggest that is the case. One teammate on the 1991 tour of the Windies said about Jones, "There are two things Jones likes to talk about - cricket and himself."

are you sure about this?? i thought he didnt get selected the test match after this occurred? and yes, the white against white was clashing.

and as for deano being obsessed with himself... i understand he's reminded allan border numerous times of his double hungie in madras during AB's Trek for Kids

I'm sure. He got dropped (made 12th man) for the first Test against the West Indies in Brisbane in November 1992.

The incident with Ambrose didn't happen until January 1993.

Apart from alleged personality clashes Jones had with teammates, his form had fallen away over the previous couple of seasons. His performances in 1990/91 against England, 1991 in the Windies and 1991/92 against India had been disappointing. His averages from these series had been inflated by getting big scores in 'dead' Tests when the series had already been decided.
