WTF Is this the same Cogga that chewed out my a rse last week when on another thread.
I totally agree with what you said
It is good to see you are coming around!
For those that say that Bowden should have done more on Lynch, think of it like this. It is the same sort of miss match that it would be if you had Selwood playing on Richo last night.
Selwood would have been carved up because he would have been too shot and too light, just like Bowden was.

dude, its not about coming around. Its about telling it as i see it. dont get me wrong, the ledger is so lopsided its not funny when it comes to Joel. But lat night he was put to the sword. Total mismatch, you cant suggest that Joel playing on the unit, deep into the FL was going to produce run off can you TW? so it was purely a stopping job that you wanted and you picked the wrong man, even though you had to. i.e The right man was there, but not yet TW. WHen we are playing in games that actually have meaning, very confident that the right stopper will be activated. THe forcefield would tear a new one with the lynchs of this world. Closing speed to the contest is what you need for muppets like this and The force has it in bucketloads.;)

And who is the right stopper???
That is the problem
Thursty and Mcguane are too light and I don't think polak has the pace.
If they tried him down bak again Schulz could probably match it better than anyone else.
But how do you put a guy that just kicked 9 goals in the backline.

man, you need to get with the program of modern footy. One on ones are a rarity nowadays. All those so called "experts" like the spuds of this world, that sit in a box high up in the stands, spruking their BS, say what they say, but its them living in a world of dreams. You might snag a couple of goals from an "isolation" move, but the oppostion soon work out that they drop a guy back to stop it. Its the leading forward that is most dangerous and you need to have someone that can stop 4 out of 6 of those moves, or even 6 out of 6 that gives you the edge. Thursfield dont need to build up, all he needs is the assignment. But we dont need him to get the assignment, until the assignment means more than us winning our third game of the year. ;)

:D

consistently soft

Accuse him of looking laconic or playing out of position by all means. But one thing Joel Bowden isn't is soft. He's played with all sorts of injuries over the years when players of lesser courage would've taken another week or more on the sidelines. He's strung more successive games together over the years than anyone else at the club - has he actually missed one since Spud dropped him early in 2004? And he played those couple of weeks at Coburg anyway.

His bravery was galvanised to me when watching him get crunched repeatedly by Cam Mooney at Kardinia Park three or four years ago, just a fortnight after Brad Miller tried to turn his already broken jaw into a compound fracture while Joel was lying on the ground. And each time Joel lifted himself up off the deck and filled the hole again for the very next contest. I had a beer with Cam Mooney after that game at my mate's pub in Geelong and he described Bowden as "f**ken bulletproof".

Bowden did the same a few weeks ago when Richo gave him a hospital pass allowing Byron Pickett of all people to line him up and take him out in the left forward pocket at the Punt Road End. But once again Joel just picked himself up, gave Richo a well-deserved greasy look, and got to the next contest, despite clearly being really injured.

I haven't seen the Eagles game yet so whatever he got up to Saturday night I'm not aware of. But it sounds from what most people have said here that he was given a ridiculous task that was physically beyond his means. If he gets Gehrig again in Round 22 this will be equally as daft a positional move.

Great post GOJJ.
It is heartening to see that someone out there actually has a true understanding of what Bowden actually does on the field week after week.
You only have to go back to the Collingwood game when he beat Rocca in the air in a marking contest and the ball spilled forwards and then he applied a brilliant tackle that saved an almost certain goal.
Most players would have sat back after the spoil and thought that their job was done.
Credit were credit is due is rare on this site, which is a real shame.
But I guess why would so called supporters let the truth get in the way of petty bitching. Then half the people on here would have nothing to talk about!!!

tiger dude with all due respect, this is why you look ridiculous to those who understand the game. So we only have to go back to that one marking contest, where Bowden did what "most" players dont?
Most players would have done exactly the same. ;)

Your life is one big negative sh1t heap.

wow really? yeah, you tend to be somewhat negative when reality suggests you should be. Now i wonder what happy pills you have been subscribed. BTW do you find yourself having to think about the next step you are going to take and then smiling when you have nailed it down to having to put your right foot forward next? ;)

I'll be honest, Bowden lost me this year.
I've always been a fan of his abilities and his service to this club. Bro went to uni with him, very nice bloke.

BUT apart from a handful of games this season he's been woeful. Has wayyyyy too much control in determining the tempo of our play. Hes a highly skilled player no doubt, but he has a tendency for brain explosions when hes not switched on and thats happened A LOT this season. Its obvious hes one of the senior blokes who got cut up with ploughs 2011 comment and hasnt really been interested.

He'd still provide value to a strong side for another 2-3 years, so trade him we dont need him any longer.

Mate I am 20 years of age. You know what that means? I have supported possibly the most unsuccessful team in the AFL my whole life. I'm well aware of how shit we are/have been. Most of your posts shit me because all you accomplish in your confusing jargon is reflect your pessimistic attitude to everything that revolves around the RFC.

I'm often critical of Bowden but the guy isn't a FB. We have no experience in defense which is why he is there. If he plays on a quality forward he will recieve continual rapings. Most posters on here tend to forget that Bowden was initially a forward and has had to play a position he's not meant too.

man, idgaf about your predicament. Do you know what that means? ;)

Perfect. Well done. I'm really not sure what everyone expects from a bloke who should be playing on the wing / HFF / HBF when he has to stand the monsters every week. He deserves some credit for allowing blokes like Thursfield the chance to develop, rather than be "Zac Dawsoned".

IDHAC what IDGAF stands for because ICBF caring all that much.

Leave him alone....all of you! All of you! All of you!
Well said Goldust.
But you and I both know that they won't leave him alone.
Lets face it some people just aren't happy unless they have something or someone to bitch about.

All this highlights is the fact that as for as long as i can remember, we do not have a defensive monster to play on opposition attacking monsters. McGuane will never cut it playing on the likes of lynch - giving away 3 inches and 20kg - and bowden's even shorter, if heavier. We need a 195cm+ big gorilla like daniel merrett or rutten or glass.

Some say Bowden is played out of position.
Boo Hoo.

I'd have thought that after 6 years playing the position he has been,he may have learnt how to actually do it properly.

Oh well...he's obviously not as good as some think.........

All this hor$esH1t about Bowden being a winger. He couldn't play on a decent wingman three years ago, he's so bloody slow and ill prepared to run hard the other way.

Boo hoo! He was played out of position. The guy has been a backman for the best part of his career. Thing is he used to sneak forward to take a crack on goal. He should have made Lynch work overtime going the other way instead of letting that hack kick seven.

That's the problem with being a poor side. The opposition bum - think Ben Graham - always plays well against you. Bowden should have been thankful Wallace assigned him Lynch instead someone like Hanson.

What are you on about???

Bowden ran out of the back line giving off a perfect low long pass time after time. There were numerous times when Lynch didnt want to chase him or couldnt chase him What helped Lynch were our turnovers and him being 10-20 meters behind Bowden turned into a positive. At one stage there was something like 4-5 turnovers in succession in a 7 minute period (Foley- 2 kicks, Tambling 1 kick - cant remember the other ciulprit) who's errant passess punished us with 3 goals.

Hey Bowden may be a backman, he may have played that position for a few years now, but he definitely is not and will never be a fullback who can play on bigger stronger forwards. He may win one here or there but if we lose the centre clearances and give off errant disposals like in the game last weekend, then no matter who the backman is, I guarantee you he would have had a bag of goals kicked on him.

Yeah, he hasn't been the best, I'll grant you that. And I'm a fan of his work, and will certainly concede this season has not been one of Joel's better ones. But he's battled his guts out in the face of sustained adversity and deserves a lot more respect that what many so-called supporters are affording him.

I agree with that and your earlier comments, soft he is not and doesnt deserve the vitriol that hes served from supporters on here. I was at the dome close to the incident when, playing with a fractured cheek, he dived at the knees of a melbourne player copping it flush in the face. Didnt flinch, didnt milk it and continued on with minimum fuss.

Whats with his weight? The beefy look doesnt suit him, he used to sell candy to opponents several times a game making them look rubbish, hes slowed down a helluva lot and dont recall him doing it much at all this season. Trim down Joel!
