I'm getting braces next week and I'm not looking forward to it. :o

What's there to expect?

PS. I got my seperators put in today and I've been told they hurt, is this true?

Cheers.

I got braces 10 years ago. Not a lot of fun but I am gald I got them to be truthful.

The seperators can hurt but you get used to it. The pain really comes from how they sit on the gums (sometimes they dig in which really hurts).

The procedure itself just takes a lot time. Once you are under the gas, it all goes by pretty quickly.

The next day is when it hurts - you wake up and your mouth is in a lot of pain so main sure they give you good pills to take or get strong Panadol. AFter a few days, the pain is gone and it is fine after that.

The biggest thing is your mouth just takes a few weeks to adjust. Suddenly your lips have to sit on top of the braces. It takes getting used to but after a while, the mouth adjusts. It is similar when they are taken off - the mouth just needs to get used to it and then it is fine.

My advice: don't eat sugar!!!!!!! So many of my friends had sweets, Coke etc and they permanently stain the teeth. Dump the sugar (and your waistline will also thank you for it).

I had em for 3 years, they arent the funnest thing in the world. Usually you'll be alright, except for when they tighten them, your mouth will ache like a bitch for a couple of days.

Also they dig into your gums/the inside of your mouth on occasions so you'll probably get sores etc. And getting hit in the mouth causes the sores as well, and stings like a bitch.

Aside from that, you'll be fine:p

Got mine off about 2 yrs ago. I was told that they hurt which they didnt.
Not sure why everyone was complaining when they got tightened aswell, That also didnt seem to hurt.

I guess it all depends on the persons pain tolerance

I got my braces off over a year ago, they weren't fun at the time, but it was really worth it. I only had to wear a plate for the whole day/night for 2 weeks and now just two nights a week, which is good. I found the plate worse, because there's a huge temptation not to wear it..but when you don't you regret it, because the next time it really hurts.

It hurts when you get them on and for a bit after that, and your lips will be like what the hell for a bit, but after that it's fine. Getting them adjusted hurts too, but panadol works good for that.

They're well worth it.

I was lucky in the sense that I only had mine on for about 14 months, but they did the job very nicely.

The separators probably hurt the most for me, so don't worry if you're in pain now, because the braces aren't as bad.

Only time the braces hurt are for the first week after getting them on, and then for about a day after getting them tightened.

The seperators aren't hurting atm, but are a bit uncomfortable. Feels like having food inbetween your teeth 24/7.

I think I'm only getting them for 2 years because the X-rays showed my wisdom teeth are starting to grow and I'll need to get 3 of them out. :thumbsd:

Had them in Year 10, for about 18 months, everyone says that they hurt, but not too bad. Just cant chew into chewy stuff like you do without them. When you get them off though, the glue that remains is the annoying part! The plate after was annoying, but you get used to it.

I had Braces from August 2002 to November 2004. They were painfull at times do you got used to them after a few weeks, remember to ask you orthodontist for dental wax before you leave too. Dental wax can stop sores in your mouth and on your lips from happening. I've had heaps of things done to my teeth in my life:
  • Have had 3 teeth pulled (two when I was 5 - I was screaming my head off) as my adult teeth were growing behind my baby ones.
  • Had a jaw mover appliance (like two mouthguards fixed together) when I was in year 3 - didn't work
  • Had jaw mover plates - very bad overbite (two of them for each arch of teeth) when I was in year 4-6 - worked
  • Wore braces when I was in year 8-10
  • Have retainer plates - only wore them for 2 months then gave up - got my teeth finally the way they should be
  • Still got a fixed wire behind my lower teeth.
Good luck and all the best :thumbsu:

Don't worry, I'm already a natural.

I'm not looking forward to not having chewy for 2 years.

I had chewy when I had my braces, just have the extra sugarfree one, it doesn't stick at all.

I had fantales anyway.

Im shocking. I ate everything, hahah'

and willow, i think your ortho didn't tell you ;)

Or on how much they need to be tightened.

I had them when I was 13-15. They weren't too bad. Sometimes ached a bit after tightening but generally they were OK with a bit of panadol. Didn't have any issues with gum or nuts or any of the things people say you can't eat.

And now I have beautiful teeth

I had them taken off last year in July after having them for 10 months or so. I got the clear plastic brackets though.. never get it. Murder if you're ever going to eat Thai or Indian food as they stain yellow.

Expect ulcers from poking wires, snapping brackets if you eat the wrong foods (although luckily mine only snapped one) and a dull achy pain when you get them "tightened". Worth everything once you get them off though.

You can have chewing gum and everything else.. no toffee though.. guaranteed snaps there.
