I would take Class over speed any day and this kid oozes Class.

He is developing nicely.
Some of the other so called Not Quick midfielders in the comp.

Nick DelSanto
Sam Mitchell
Jobe Watson
Joel Corey
Garry Ablett Jr- Not real quick just smart.
Joel Selwood
Adam Selwood
Simon Black
Brett Kirk

I could keep going, but as you can see what these guys lack in speed they make up for in Footy Smarts and Ability.
As a matter of fact who in the Cats side has blistering pace, Burns and Varco are quick but not blistering I cant think of any one and they regardless of there last 2 weeks IMO are still the best team in the country.

Ebert will be a GUN give the kid time, and lets thank the lord that we have a young midfielder with his ability.

I would just like to say I remember watching the Eagles in 2001/2002 and seeing names such as Hunter and Glass (these are the two I remember most clearly) and thinking these two players are never going to become great players. We now know that Hunter was in 2006 the best swingman in the league and Glass well.... he is definately a West Coast legend and will be remembered as one of the greatest. Ebert has not taking the AFL by storm however he hasnt disgraced himself either, he has shown he is commited to the Eagles cause by not saying anything about running back to Adelaide and I honestly believe in time he will become a great player if not brilliant player... in the shape of a Ricciouto (sorry about the spelling) or someone like that with a greaty footy brain and also a great pair of hands and a reliable kick. We have to stand back for a bit and realize how lucky we are as a football club, we have now had 3 premierships, 5 grand finals and a couple orf top of the ladder finishes. Just lets give this kid sometime to devolop and realize that Chris Judd and co do not grow on trees ....

That is all :)

Mmm, the old threads around here were smashing Glass. It is kind of funny to see the bold statements people make end up totally off base. It is impossible to judge these kids when they are so inconsistent. On the other hand, it is easy to judge someone like JON, who was consistently shit, or Judd, who was consistently good.

Good points. Got me thinking about which of the 'all-time' best midfielders were actually known for their blistering pace....

Considering the Brownlow has been won by a midfielder for the last god-knows-how-long and assuming thats a reasonable indicator that winning it must mean the player is at the very least in the elite category, how many of the recent Brownlow winners have been really quick? I randomly picked 1995 as a starting point:

1995 - Paul Kelly (not really quick)
1996 - James Hird (no), Michael Voss (no)
1997 - Robert Harvey (God no!)
1998 - Robert Harvey (no)
1999 - Shane Crawford (no, at least I don't think so)
2000 - Shane Woewodin (ha ha ha ha)
2001 - Jason Akermanis (Hmmm, I lean towards no)
2002 - Simon Black (no)
2003 - Mark Ricciuto (no), Nathan Buckley (no), Adam Goodes (possibly)
2004 - Chirs Judd (Absolutely)
2005 - Ben Cousins (not really)
2006 - Adam Goodes (possibly)
2007 - Jimmy Bartel (no)
2008 - Adam Cooney (yes)

Out of the 15 winners over the last 14 years I'd say only two could be said to have had blistering pace, with possibly a couple more considered 'pacy'. The majority of them are not slow but pace is certainly not their asset; vision, creativity, skills, endurance, agression and competitiveness definitely are. Considering pace as the be all and end all is sooooo '2000 and late'.:D

The list also highlights that very few of them had blistering starts to their career, instead working themselves to the elite level over 3, 4 and even 5 years. Personally, while Ebert looks promising and I like his competetiveness I don't know enough to make a call on whether he will be elite or good or indifferent. I do know though that you can't make that call on an 18 yo kid in his second season with less than 30 games under his belt and no pre-season to speak of. Thats just silly.

I just cant wait in our next premiership to see our young stars such as Ebert having a starring role in the half foward line, with Mastern kicking precise bullets to JK in the square and Mckenzie and Glass (in 3 years I am expecting :)) holding together our defence. And Mundy missing a shot after the siren to win the game and getting burnt on a stake by the purple haze... wait Freo wont be in the grand final lol that wont happen.

In that case WCE2012, can we bring him back home? Considering how much he apparently sucks we'll trade you Michael Pettigrew and a 5th rounder.

Pettigrew is a spud, throw in Josh Carr and you gotta deal

Brad Ebert is turning out to be a terrible waste of a first round pick. Ridiculously slow, he makes Priddis look like Davey and has average skills at best. The crows certainly knew their stuff when overlooking him. Well done to Rendell for sticking to his guns and choosing the much better prospect:thumbsu:

Callan Ward, Rance and Grimes were taken after Ebert...:o
Alot of you on here get touchy when someone bags a young player. A first round pick after 20 odd games should be showing clubs and supporters why they were picked ahead of every body else. Ebert is and always will be a battler. Pace and acceleration is so important for mids. In yesterdays game he was caught after a run and bounce that's speed and urgency emulated a tortoise.

Lets face it, midfielders win games. Im not very optimistic with the current high end midfield picks so far.

Chop your head off mate!
There is obviously no brains in it or you would realise that Ebert is a year younger than most recruits from his draft year. That means he lines up against last years picks and against that lot he is well placed to have a long and successful career.

I think hes been awesome this year. Not sure what planet you've been on mate but I can tell you Eberts not far off becoming a quality midfielder particularly when you remember hes a year younger than most taken in that draft.

just lacks a little bit of awareness at the moment, sometimes i don't think he realises how quick the game is at afl level, if he is still showing these signs this time next year then i'll be worried.

My thoughts exactly. That passage of play where he played on after marking on the 50m line was a ridiculous lack of awareness to say the least. Hopefully he will improve these things by next season, as he has shown flashes of brilliance..............
