Kinda.

First opened in 1880. But West Coast fans wouldn't know shit about history anyway, so no point trying to explain anything pre-1987 with you guys

I thought that was the Magpies home ground?

Anyone saying he is an average footy player with no upside should go watch the West Coast v Geelong game earlier on this year.

My money is on him resigning. I hope so anyway because his trade value will be low.

A second round pick won't do as it's highly unlikely we will get a better player than Ebert from it. Ebert plus something for Pearce :D

Injuries aside, Port will be hoping that Newton turns into a very good midfielder. I wouldn't do a straight swap of Newton for Ebert, let alone also throw in a second round pick.

This seems like one of those scenarios where the player will dictate the trade. I'd be amazed if Port pursue this one very vigorously, unless Brad approaches the club and states that he only wants to come to us.

At best, he looks like he is going to be a solid, consistent contributor who's unlikely to tidy up his limitations (pace, foot disposal) to the point of elevating himself above second or third tier midfield status.

With that in mind, and given our full shelf of one-paced, lowly-to-average skilled utilities (Thomas, Logan, Broadbent, Kane Cornes, even the captain himself), he's not the sort of player we should be chasing after very hard.

For a second round pick, we'd probably take him - at least that will also allow us to use PSD pick 2 on someone else.

What are some trade scenarios only involving picks that would be slightly more generous than Port's second round pick?

I don't think that WC will use a third round pick.

Ebert (and some combo of third round pick, third round compo pick)
for
Port's 2nd (and some combo of third round pick, compo pick?)

He's not that great. I wouldn't pick him up if I was Port. I don't think the Eagles could command heaps for him, we'd be better off if he decides to stay. I wonder how much short term success will guide his decision to stay. Genuine flag chance next year or two versus a struggling team. Could be worth signing another 2 year contract and then reassessing his options.

ebert is the epitome of average player.

not outstanding in any one area. good in some areas and poor in others.

has always been a good size physically, and is a good competitor. looks very likely to be at or near his peak, not alot of upside or development appears likely.

is no longer played on the ball but has been played as a flanker.

is currently somewhere in the 16th-26th range at his club.

no way is he worth a first round pick.

footskills have become hugely important in the modern game, and are an area primus has targeted as where port needs to improve. this is one of eberts biggest weaknesses. you want a player that can be damaging with their disposal, it has been well noted that ebert at his best will not do to much damage to his own team with his disposal. as in any kick that isnt a direct turnover is a good outcome. those standards expected of him tell you about his delivery by foot, and this is him as he has improved.

west coast fans will be quick to tell you he is being played out of position, and will be a good inside mid. well i saw west coast struggling last year without kerr and with ebert spending time in the middle and he did not set the world on fire. was noted for burning the ball and this year has mainly been ejected from the midfield and most west coast fans have seen this as an improvement.

at port adelaide he would be behind boak, grey, cassisi, hartlett, pearce and pittard in the middle. guys like jacobs, newton and moore are highly rated have much more upside and will be given more chances than him as well. will likely be battling with salopek, banner, broadbent, thomas, rodan and irons for a spot before we even head to the draft. so at best might be in the 7th-12th midfielder on our list but more likely to be in the 9th- 15th range. that doesnt exactly scream value for 1st round pick. nor does it suggest that he will get alot of time in the middle.

if he hadnt been taken as a pick around the top 10 he would never be mentioned as a first rounder during trade speculation. never.

to be honest west coast fans would probably be right in suggesting that our 2nd round pick is fair.

if i had any pull at the club though my vote would be no.

*he is not what we need. if anything we have boak, grey and cassisi who are good in tight players, we need gut runners who can deliver very well by foot. we have plenty of similar players already fighting for a spot in our 22.

*his type are very easy to acquire through drafting, with late picks or as early picks that didnt come as good as you hoped

* players with average disposal and average speed but very good competitors are very easily accessible through mature aged pick-ups as these are the types that slip through the draft and go to wafl/sanfl/ vfl. any avid sanfl watcher could probably name half a dozen or more guys who have very similar traits to ebert and even if they may only be ( subjectively) 70% 80% or 90% of what he is will cost us our psd pick.

* the game has moved so as to highlight his weaknesses. we know this as we see very good players age and just lose that turn of speed or players that have been very good for a long time but kicking is not their strength go from the game much earlier than expected.

100% agree with all this.

I recall Crazy Vossy rating him as one of the best of the draft (based on his AIS coaching knowledge of young Ebert).

WCE should give Vossy a call - may get two first rounders for him.

Crazy Vossy also rated Tom Swift as the best 16yo he had ever seen. Vossy may be ready to offer a mega deal to get Ebert and Swift.

100% agree with all this.
In an uncompromised draft he would be worth a pick late first round or early second IMO... That would be somewhere pick 15 - 25.

This year, due to GWS, a late first rd is something like pick 25...

Therefore IMO he is worth a first round selection this year.

He has got potential, more so than Brock McLean who Carlton paid pick 11 for. If he can improve his kicking would be a solid AFL player in any side, which is more than you can so for many kids picked up after pick 25.

If no one wants to pay that, so be it. Would rather keep him if we can. The only reason he wasn't playing finals was we only had one player on the injury list, and he could still cement his spot in the 22.

Just because he hasn't been very good to date does not mean he's going to get better.

True but people are intent on focusing on the bad side and not the good side that he has also shown.

I genuinely believe a first round pick between 10-20 would be fair. Below pick 15 would be a win for us and above 15 would be a fair deal.

I would be pissed of if we let him go for peanuts.

You are an idiot.

Over 70 games at the age of 21-22 still 2-3 years from top form. Easily worth a first round pick.

This isn't the bay, pal.

The majority of those games was when your mob was south of the ladder and most of that was necessity through injuries. He has either hit top form or he won't get a chance to at the Eagles. And I can't see any team gambling a top 20 pick that he will.

Brock McLean board chump.

Your deluded if you think injuries kept him in the team during our lowly years.
He was best 22 but now has too much competition to get in our best 22 every week. Top 25 though. The name Ebert alone will get him to SA and will land us a nice combo of picks and players.

I think WCE have a bit of a problem here. Masten and Gaff have pretty much gone past Ebert as midfielders and Ebert played mainly as a forward as far as I could see this year (I don't get to watch WCE every weekend).
And when Ebert got dropped for the final couple games I think he would interpret that as a signal to move on.

Same thing happened at Port early in the 2000's and Tom Harley, Stephen Gilham and Brent Guerra all moved on and made excellent careers for themselves elsewhere when they couldn't get a game at Port. Didn't mean they weren't good players.

If you see what Port got for those players I think WCE will get similar for Ebert.

You can treat this as biased but this is my opinion on Ebert.

He's extremely strong overhead (and tall for a mid), courageous and versatile. These traits will hold him in good stead over the long-term. His kicking has improved this year (and has a lovely set shot action) and he's had a couple of extremely impressive games. I think his development is right on track for where it should be at his age - not ahead of the curve, but not behind.

By the time he's 25, with an extra few kilos on him, I see Ebert being a very good player. Not the team superstar but a consistently strong performer and a leader, which every good team needs. Especially if he decides he's ok with not being a full-time midfielder, and instead performs roles all over the ground as needed, as his versatility is one of his biggest assets.

I'd love to hang on to him and hope he stays. But if he doesn't I'd accept nothing less than a mid-teens to early-20's draft pick.
