Brad Smith Stats

Lynch probably would have had as many shots at goal (if he got the same service as Smith at Subi), but his conversion rate probably would have limited him to around 70-75.

troy wilson was only 188cm (although built like the brick outhouse) smith is a much better height at 194cm. also, brad isnt skinny, a good weights program will have him looking $1million.

Has anyone thought that the selection of brad smith may mean that gardy is back in contention for ruck duties more than forward line

Hope so

I dont think anyone is suggesting that McDougalls position in the team is under threat.... and if they are they are dreaming. The kid has barely played 30 games and he should be given at least another 3 years until we see him at his potential.

Hey Frank you can't have it both ways. On one hand you're giving a player time to develop (a further 3 years) and on the other hand calling players after 2 seasons duds and not seeing any need to give them time for development!!!.

I'm not too sure if McDougall is going to succeed, but he has been on the senior list for 4 years and you are giving him another 3. In reality he has to pull the digit out in 2005.

I must admit that I didn't think Smith was all that strong in the upper body until saw him training last week, he may be able to hold his ground better than I thought. Anyway good on Smith for getting the chance at AFL level

Huh? Who have I called a dud after 2 seasons?

and 3 of those years were spent injured... only last year he started to string some games together... he has only played 30 odd games of AFL due to these injuries so its not like he has been a 80 game flop. He needs to "improve" in 2005 but I can't stand it when people say he has to "pull the digit out". It makes it sound like he is just coasting along and not trying... and anyone who says that has absolutely no idea about what it would be like to play AFL. Every player goes out there and tries.

i agree with u total, and doogs is most certainly worth the wait. An extremely mobile, tall man, wtf would we want to get rid of him like masai is indicating.

I suppose I should clarify my comments on McDougall.

Back when Doogs was drafted I was speaking to his auntie (who is not a footy fan) and she felt he may have to learn to lift his intensity at a senior level. He was so gifted at the junior level that he "breezed" through and was never really challenged, all the right doors opened for him. Sometimes you need to hit some bumps to get the best out of a player eg. school of hard knocks.

I never ever suggested getting rid of McDougall, he just needs to find some mongrel. His junior career shows that he has the talent, he just has to show he really wants to use 100% of that talent. This adage about using all their talent applies to alot of players in the AFL.

TP, your comment about giving Doogs a further 3 years was picked up by me because you have called / inferred that Polak and Sandilands are "ordinary" after they have only been on the scene for 3 and 2 years. You might be correct, but you are applying different parameters to suit your arguments.

I hope

Im not sure I have ever said Polak was ordinary... in fact I dont think he is ordinary at all. I think he is a ordinary Forward and a very good backman.... and that is a problem for Fremantle because you have Luke McPharlin there at CHB. Fremantle persisted with him as a Forward and he was pretty bad there.

As for Sandilands.... you could give him 10 years and he still won't be up to it. With him it isnt about experience and learning to play... he has physical limitations which don't allow him to keep up with more mobile ruckmen and you can't teach someone to chase Gardiner and Cox all day when they phsyically can't.

I know A.F.L. is a different ball game but it would be interesting to compare Smith's stats from his time in the W.A.F.L. to Peter Sumich's record with the eagles. Perhaps someone of Smith's calibre is what the eagles need in front of goal.

Id back Phillip Matera to kick 100 in the WAFL.

I have to see Smith in the preseason to really get a feel on where he is at AFL level because as I have previously mentioned I have no interest in the WAFL or regional football at all. So I have never seen Smith play.

I don't doubt that about Matera at WAFL level......I would back Smith to boot 100 at AFL level.

I think he can based on the stats stated at the start of the thread. Yes, I know the AFL is a different game with all the physical pressure that gets put on the players. The eagles on paper have one of the best midfields ever assembled at the eagles (if not, the best), so ball movement will be crucial for the forwards. Give Smith 2 - 3 years to come up with the goods. :)

Didnt take long for the Kangaroos supporters to get cut up over the fact we got the decent Le Cras and they got the crab :D

Never mind mate... its easier to transplant a heart than it is to transplant a heartbeat into a dying club. You should really think about becoming an Eagles supporter when the Kangaroos fold in say 3 or 4 years.

Do you want to try again and address the question as it relates to McDougall instead of ranting on about some completely unrelated dribble? Or is it a case of the truth hurts?

What question is he supposed to address? You trolled with a pathetic attempt at humour, and he gave it back to you with interest.

I think your all getting a bit premature on Smith............WAFL to AFL is a huge jump and I think a lot of you are expecting that he will come in and be a star and kick 60?? I think that is very unlikely.

Lets all not get ahead of ourselves here.

Anyone see the irony here :D You admit you have never seen Smith play and don't watch a game of WAFL yet you have already consigned him to being ordinary!!! I've seen Smith play.... sure the WAFL isn't as intense... but I believe he has what it takes to be a success at AFL. He is a natural FF with a good lead and a great pair of hands and that is something you cannot teach someone. It takes years to learn to play Full Forward and in some cases I don't think some players have the ability to learn how to. It's probably the most specialised position on the ground and you have to have a certain amount of natural talent. He is not a Troy Wilson or Brendan Fewster where he relies on strength to beat opponents in the WAFL.... he relies on good kicking and service from the midfield.... and that is where he will benefit more I believe from the AFL than the WAFL.

As in my first post... he only needs to get the ball 6 times a game to kick 5 goals. McDougall kicked 35 goals 29 last year... and he wasn't even playing Full Forward for some of those early games.... if you give Brad Smith 65 to 85 shots at goal in a year he will kick you 50 to 70 goals without a problem. Having said that he averaged 5 goals a game in the WAFL this year.... if he averages 3 goals a game in the AFL and gets 60 for the year I would be more than happy with that and he would have done his job which is more importantly straightening the side up the middle and not having players leading to the boundary line.
