It was stated on the commentary that Wakes was all set to go until 2-3 minutes before running out on to the ground.
Strained a groin muscle (I think) during the warm up in the rooms.
Presti on the other hand was left out due to having no obvious match up.

...I'm dumb (& I have references), but who here would leave out both Wakelin and Presti??

Odd.
According to Balme (on SEN) this morning.
Both have minor groin strains
Presti was always going to out and Wakes hurt his in the warm up.
Both should be OK for next week

My logic is that if Presti or Wakelin were in, they would have pushed Grant into the backline, and left them without a matchup. Obviously, with Murphy down, Grant was forced up forward all night, but we weren't to know that.

Maxwell was preferred for his versatility, as he could have potentially played on a smaller player, and it's not as though he got absolutely pantsed. Grant got a couple of goals from free kicks, and without those, we'd be applauding Maxy's efforts on him.

I think we went the right way. Both will be rested for next week anyway, when they'll be needed - Presti for Brown and Wakelin for Bradsaw, IMO.

I disagree with that vinnie, as you have to pick Grant's match up with us. Who would it have been? Clearly not Tarrant and Rocca would have run him into the ground also.

Murphy was up forward for most of the night, but strayed down back for his unfortunate injury.

Grant's only option was up forward, or loose defender (which Wakes could have acted also). As such we had to play Wakes. I'll take the stories of Wakes being injured, over a strategically inept coaching decision to allow Maxwell get dominated.

Balme is full of sh1t! way well be true but i dont trust his word.
Perhaps it was ploy to get maxwell to perform, jolt him out of his form slump (re. the 1 ruckmen decision against west coast)

That last point is a pretty good one M42.
I thought the decision was good, but probably would of kept at least Wakes in (that's if he didn't actually get injured) just for insurance. Maxwell performed ok but made some silly mistakes including going to air to early. I believe Maxwell can play against bigger opposition, he performed reasonably well against Riedwoldt and Pavlich in the preseason.

Well, Wakes was injured and Presti was for team balance. I would think Wakes would've played, but then again that Davies conspiracy Mr.Lyon used may be true.

Did the Pies expect Grant to go forward? Cos I did!

Wakelin was not injured. After doing the warm up they found the ground slippery and decided to leave Wakelin out. If you believe Wakelin was injured you will believe just about anything.

I would have had Presti in the team to match up Grant and Wakes would have been the one to miss.
But definitely felt we needed one of them to play and said to myself early in the 1 st quarter when I saw him"Why the :D:D:D:D is Davies out there?"

We are in good form and i think we can afford to give kids a go and i think doing so will be beneficial for us in the long run!
maxwell will be better! i think he should be given full back responsibilities more often!

Hmmm, so what did Balme say that made you think he was lying?

Rules state that emergencies can only replace a injured player. The AFL overlook this most times but certainly wouldn't if a player is replaced after the team sheets have gone in. The club had no choice but to claim a injury regardless.

Unlike us supporters who only look one week at a time, Malthouse has to look further ahead. The key to beating Brisbane is to shutdown Brown and Bradshaw. The key to beating the dogs is matching their running power, not tall defenders.

I am very happy we rolled the dice on resting Wakes and Presti against the dogs and backing ourselves to win anyway (which we did, quite confortably in the end) and then having Wakes and Presti fresh for next week.
