Family & Relationships Bravery

That huge issue is probably tied in to the OP dynamic and the "metro/pampered" me-first younger generations of males in Australia and general PC-culture.
Kids ain't what they used to be, that's just a generational lament isn't it?

Yep, I also think lack or limited education plays a part in that as well but I don't think this generation is the only generation who has experienced this.

If all hell breaks loose in society due to war starting, or looting and violence, I think people (especially men) are far weaker this last generation than previous generations. Too pampered, too metro, too soft, too PC, etc, to do brave things. From time to time, I see an unusual situation occur in a public setting, some weird crazy guy is yelling and verbally abusing women, or a tough looking or terrorist looking guy is hanging around, or like two or three teen males are following a young girl, or some lone man is being pushed around by a thug, etc....and the men around me (most of the younger ones) do nothing, look away, even get up and move far away so they're not potentially involved etc.

I think men who have gone thru adversity, physical hardship, like myself, and perhaps even have a "fck it, my life is fcked anyway" sense of self, like myself, have a greater propensity to be more chivalrous/brave.

what is chivalry and what's the correlation with being brave?

I think there's a general lack of resilience amongst the under 30s these days. They're tough to employ, that's for sure.

I believe that this generation of adults are becoming exactly like every one before them, the common refrain is "kids these days" and "back in my day". I think adults don't realise how hard it must be being young these days with high house prices, uni becoming more expensive and the global economy crippling many previously safe industries.

On topic if I ever do anything heroic you won't hear me deflect any praise. You'll hear things from me like "I agree, I don't think anyone else would have done that", "yes it was pretty brave wasn't it?" and "if I don't get an award for this the premier can get ****ed" among other self congratulatory phrases.

This is a sweeping statement that's a bit poor tbh. I know young people who are graduating uni with good grades in respected fields like engineering, law and can't land a job. It's tough out there.

Which is frustrating because people know this and still employ them over the over 50s who we know are reliable. <personal experience>

Yep if you drop them they dont land on their feet

Instead of rushing the gunman, make him think you're on his side, maybe even pick out a fellow hostage "I totally agree with you, you should start with this one" then when you've gained his trust wrestle the gun away from him. Sure you'd be an absolute dick who has got someone else killed but it's far smarter than rushing a gunman and probably more likely to save lives and you'd be being brave enough not to be the hero. ;)

I've got plenty of anecdotal evidence for older blokes showing indifference/nonchalance in threatening situations too. I'm not sure if it's a generational thing or a sign of the times, but people are generally pretty self-interested.

People also like the certainty of non-acting: you don't do anything, nothing happens; if you do something, you're exposed to a host of negative ramifications. Even if they're all imagined.

Resilience is also something you develop over time. It may come more naturally to others, but you have to have experience in trying situations to know you can overcome them. Early adulthood is all about learning to adapt and discovering ways of overcoming adversity after being nurtured by your parents for so long.

Both my folks struggled big time in their early 20's, so again, I don't think it's a generational thing. By the time the current crop of 20 year old's are in their 30's, they'll be comparing what they see as menial struggles to what the present-day 20-year old's contend with.

Its not that. Its because you've suffered and don't want others to. It's because you have a heart and have not allowed your experiences to define you negatively. In other words, you passed the class. All the pretty boys and barby dolls here ken not pass the class until they have truly suffered. Until then they are spoiled little immature brats and keyboard warriors who pick on the week and vunrable.
