Ah yes they were great days, when one great club gathered together to proudly save itself, while the usual pariahs in Geelong, Geelong and Geelong etc leached off the AFL to save their broke arses.

"In that darkest hour, however, the Yellow and Black faithful rallied magnificently, to ensure the $1 million was reached by the deadline."

"With seven clubs on their financial knees - Fitzroy, Geelong, Footscray, Collingwood, Melbourne, North Melbourne and Richmond - the league was in dire straits."

"Of the 11 Victorian Club companies it appears that seven of them are technically insolvent. These clubs are Fitzroy, Geelong, Footscray, Collingwood, Melbourne, North Melbourne and Richmond," he wrote on August 8, 1986.

One comment of note from the above article which has since been proven true and why we alone are the saviors of this great game.

"A public lottery to support the VFL was also considered and there was even a view if the VFL could just get Richmond to win more games the crowds would come back."

and come back they did

Thanks for the heads up Cheffy, no need to thank us for saving the game, its just what we do.
