You assumed he was the one who cost the club a fine, you assumed he was given the neccessary support, you assume that Collingwood wouldn't be willing to take another chance on him if he gets in the right head space, and you assume he wouldn't be willing to come back to Collingwood if they were to offer him that opportunity.

You may not be far off the mark, but given that none of us are aware of the full circumstances surrounding Abbotts disappearance this year, I'm keeping an open mind.

What we do know is the Asada rules about reporting whereabouts of players. If we dont know where one of our players is and we have been fined for the subsequent lack of disclosure, its not a stretch to assume that Abbot (who has gone missing more than once) may have been that player that drew the fine.

The full circumstances as to why arent really relevant.

I believe the fine may have been because Jessie White went missing, he has a history of going missing also, usually right when we need him too! o_O

I have certainly assumed that he cost the club a fine from ASADA. I did use tentative language to convey that though. If we assume that the article is accurate about the secret trips back to WA the rest is pretty straightforward. The club could have kept Abbott on the rookie list to try and work through these issues. The fact that they did not is a pretty strong indication that he is gone for good.

Welingham cost us a Sponsorship while being on the Rookie List.
The ASADA fine is most likely because of Abbott.

He went MIA previously because his mum had cancer.
The guy grew up without a father who is in prison.
It is understandable that he goes missing to see his mother with cancer.
Anyone that does not understand that is an idiot.
On top of everything his uncle is the famous Postcard bandit.

I think he deserves some slack.
He has not had a good run in his childhood.

I hope he gets his life together and gets another crack - hopefully with us.
He can play and is a waste of talent at WAFL level.

My understanding is he has gone MIA from his footy club 5 times in the past 3 season. 1 of those times was for his sick mom, sure, but is it REALLY that hard to spend 30 secs calling the club and telling them you're going to Perth? What an incredibly stupid thing to lose your job over, just had to tell the club "going to Perth from this time to this time"

True mate, but we all think differently.
We aren't all rational.
I can't know what is in his head and reasons for his behaviour.

The simple answer would be that if you are not in a good place, then yes, calling might be hard. It might seem like a bad idea for whatever reason your mind and your emotions throw at you. That doesn't make it the right call but good people sometimes make bad decisions. I'm sure in hindsight he'll regret something like that, but what can you do? There is unquestionably more to his story than a bloke who needed to see his sick mum a few times.

Hopefully he sorts his situation out and can eventually come out of it a better person who makes better decisions. As a bonus he might even make it as a player. Which would be nice.

It's great you're keeping an open mind and are aware of what is known fact and what is just assumed. But did you know you can keep an open mind and speculate at the same time. I know it's AMMMAAAAAZING!! Try it some time... it's great banter for things like footy discussions amongst strangers on the internet.

It's an action (or lack of) that unfortunately he'll have to live with now, and likely come to regret. Will be interesting to see how his career plays out now, and good luck to him, but I must say if he ends up at another club and playing v well I'll be a bit annoyed.

Me too! Hopefully if he returns it will be with us.

Sadly I suspect recruiters will put him in the "too much baggage" list now, despite his talent.

Evidence over the last few years suggests he doesn't have the mental state to have an AFL career. He was a risky proposition to begin with, a risk worth taking, most of the time they don't work out.

Footy players aren't like us.

If they were like us, they wouldn't be footy players. They'd instead be people who post on footy forums about footy players.

We can judge their failings and poke fun at their infallalabilities - being selfish, taking crazy risks, being inconsiderate, being recalcitrant, being arrogant, being violent - but having those traits has brought them to be in the top 800 people in the country who can play footy. It's a process of natural selection. And being holy and virtuous (like us) probably aren't traits that make great footy players.

The trait that makes Brendan Abbott instinctively bust open packs with wonton abandon might be the same trait that makes him go MIA.

One of the roles of the coaching staff is to tame players - but that takes time. Abbott was a first year player.

Some players never get tamed. See Phil Carman, Barry Hall, Brenden Fevola. Probably a bit too soon to put Abbott into that category.

Probably right. No harm leaving the porch light on for him though.

Some banjo playing might help to.
