Brett Deledio

Hardwick made a clear decision to move our best ball users behind the ball. It is clearly based on the Hawthorn model. BUT, in future, with the way we have recruited, it would seem once we get enough games into Dea, Batchelor etc, don't be surprised if he moves back into the midfield. It won't happen this year, but i reckon next year don't be surprised if he's back in the middle. I also think that by playing in the backline, he's learnt more about accountability.

So you are saying lids is a downhill skier then !

Lets face it, like a lot of skillfull players his defensive running and defensive output in general needed to improve. This has taught him discipline and I have no doubt hes a better rounded player now or do you think otherwise? lol

Seems like everyone has forgotten just how good Deledio was as a midfielder under Rawlings, he was a dominant midfielder for those games and looked to have finally worked out how to deal with a tag. It was comfortably the best football he has played in his entire career. His tackling was up, he kicked goals and really took the game on, dare I say he looked Judd like at times.

Last year he was effective as a HBF, no where near as damaging as when he had good games as a midfielder and over the last 5 weeks was very effectively tagged by several teams. After Geelong were beaten by Adelaide in a large part because they shut down their HB line from rebounding the forward tag really took off and Deledio copped it and had no answer for it. The problem with him on a HBF is that there is no real answer to a hard forward tag, you have to remain accountable and do not have the freedom to run a man into the ground or setup blocking at clearances.

I certainly think Deledio is at his best as a midfielder. I'd love to see him in there with Martin and Cotchin as that would be the makings of a very elite midfield full of class. The value of an elite ball user that kicks goals in the midfield is just immeasurable, as a HBF he is really not a lot better than Newman.

Not sure about no answer for it..... When they put a negating forward on Lids, he basically ignores them and gets a heap of his own ball. He was damaging enough to make the AA top 40 squad.... missed out to Goddard and Harry 0 (how??) on a HBF.

The only time Lids struggled in his role was when they played through his opponent... a la Lynden Dunn from Melbourne. Chopped Lids up because he didn't pay him enough respect....

You dont need to be einstein to see that when he came into the afl he wasn't the finished product, neither is murphy, gibbs, cotchin, natunui or anybody eld for that matter.

But you pretty much called him a downhill skier .......... Thats crap
riseing star award & 2 best & fairest all before 23 years of age whilst getting molested by the other teams best tagger

Give it a break, what more can the kid of done with the players around him !!

Downhill skier .................. Lids is certainly not

He is very accepting of a tag though.

When you get tagged there are a number of ways to get involved.

He takes himself out of the game.

The thing is , the fact that he cant shake a tag doesnt make him a downhill skier !

The thing with lids is he is too much of a fair guy & not enough mongrel in him but certainly not a downhill skier.

Didnt say her was a downhill skier.

Simply saying there are more ways to stay in the play when a tag comes your way.

One way is to consistently move at the contest, another is to put the blocks on and make space for teammates, I dont see him doing this when he goes onball.

Quite often he simply stands off the contest and makes it easy for his tagger to stand on his toes and plays to his terms.

Just an observation.

And one I wholely concur with, however if he goes into a midfield with Martin , Cotchin and Foley rotating through it , either he or one of these others would most likely not be tagged .

I think lids has been earmarked at HFB all year. Takes the kick ins and gives them a huge roost. We need someone of is ability down back if we are going to push for the eight.
