Great win tonight to the boys

And great praise should there be for Mr. Ratten

He's copped a bit on this board has Ratts, and no doubt he will in the future because we all get frustrated with the last 7 or 8 years.

But facts are facts:

  • since winning 8 games in 2006 & 2007 combined, we won 10 last year and have 11 this year with three rounds to go
  • he's been coach for just over 2 years now and we should be playing finals for the first time in 8 years
  • he's placed in a long term strategy and game plan, as we saw tonight it's a good game plan. Sure, there are times when it hasn't come off this year but he's sticking to a plan for the long term beneift. That's good coaching
  • He's playing players that some of this board query, but these guys are coming good and are actually really talented players who just need time to develop

One last word on Ratts, yes, it's been a long time since the Blues have enjoyed success and it does get frustrating, but IMHO he's coaching for the club and not for himself and he's willing to take time to build the club for long term success.

Great work Ratts, I salute you!

Wait til DBlues and all the rest of the ratts knockers get hold of this thread...

Although I dont see what they can say now...

We are virtually assured of playing finals football this year.

One more win will make it a carved in stone certainty with the bummers and the Dawks now needing to win all 4 matches to make it.

I liked how today he decided to pressure the Geelong ball carriers. Gibbs said in his after game interview that Ratts had told them that because they know Geelong loved to handball it around, it was real important to get in their faces, and this worked a treat. It was a nice change from that bullshit coralling of players that we do. Hopefully Ratts ditches that for good. Either way though, it was good to see him adapt our game plan to the team we were playing

Shit - if it's just a decision then make it each week. IF we had decided to play like that week in week out, we'd have at LEAST another 4 wins.
It's exactly how we SHOULD play given some of our skills are not yet up to scratch.

Spon on!

It has caused me to lose my sh!t more than anything else this year. How good is watching the boys tackle, hassle and annoy the opposition. YES!

Critical things:

1) Carlos gives the forward line structure. He needs to play every week
2) JR proved he can play on a marking forward. Is he the rebounding HBF we have been screaming out for?
3) The midfield were accountable. ...except for Stevens (leopard never changes its spots)
4) The midfield is kicking goals without Judd's help

What to look forward to next year...

1) HAMPSON!!!!!! Warnock and Hampson rucking. Kruezer / Hampson in a pocket and changing into the ruck. hmmmmm...yummy structure
2) Betts in the midfield rotation 100%. He will be top 10 in the league in HBG's
3) Simpson becoming "Elite"
4) Man on man footy....we suck at the zone
5) (Spot reserved for any editing)

Yep good work, the play on at all costs and pressure on Geelong and tackling was great. Ratts has had a couple of bad games, but the good outways the bad and I rapt for him after last night, he;s a champion & legend of our club, bleeds blue.

Don't think you understand what i'm talking about. It's been obvious throughout the year that we have a tactic of coralling opposition players, which ensures they can't run around us and develop an overlap. The problem with it is it gives them plenty of time to find an option. Against Geelong Ratts clearly ditched this tactic and decided to pressure the ball carrier as much as possible.

It's not a question of effort or hardwork, it's a clear tactical ploy, which thankfully Ratten altered for this game, and hopefully maintains this for the rest of the year now

NO - You're not getting it! I couldn't agree more with you - exactly what I've been saying!

A bit off topic and a bit trivial but did anyone see Gibbs with his cosk down in the first quarter? He always where's them up and it looked strange to see them down. Not only were his socks down but he was playing a bit like another sock down player.

Jimmy Bartel, the slow down kick with a biggish wind up and throwing his body around. Not really sprinting but still being quick. Reminds me a lot of Jimmy when Gibbs goes in hard as he does it well by hitting the player but getting the ball and proceeding to run away with it.

So, in conclusion: socks down Gibblet!

Mate,

In the past you have been extremely critical of Ratts and his coaching but today, I think that you have balanced everything out perfectly.

One thing that I think you forgot in your look forward to next year bit...

Gibbs and Murphy starting to scare opposition midfields as much as Judd does which could lead to the opposition trying to tag all 3 of them which means that the other players through the midfield for us will have a free rein.

All points to an exciting september and a fantastic year next year.

We took some risk, playing man on man. Played on when given the opportunity, good stuff. Ratts must try implement this POSITIVE play every game. If we make mistakes by taking on the game then so be it! Emphasis must be made in play on at all cost, and pressure the the carrier as a collective.
Tackling that stick is paramount when we outtackle the opposition we usually win. Well done Ratten and MC, lets continue this for the remaining of the year. By the way SAINTS with 115 tackles against Hawthorn, out of this world!

The thing that has impressed me with Ratten is that he has to deal with a lot of injuries to key defenders this year. we have seen so many players being played down back, chopping and changing week in week out, and managed to still play well in that defence. Besides the second collingwood and essendon game, we really havent been destroyed.

The biggest challenge Ratten has ahead of him is finding the best 22 to 25 (we'll always have injuries) next season. We have all tried to do this and it is very hard. In addition, we know the likes of Kreuzer, gibbs and murphy will step it up again...but ratts will have to find ways for the other young boys to do it also.

So far so good...i have been critical at times, but ratts is doing a good job.

well coached, put the best players on the ball and allowed them to attack and kept the ball off the opposition by doing this, hence winning the ball more than them. Unlike when we played Essendon last and went defencive and tagged too many players and tried to keep the ball in close and not take risks and run and play the corridore. This s our game plan, we have a lot of good on ballers, let them play to their strengths and let them hunt the football.

Attack, get the ball, take risks, run and carry and move the ball through the middle and get it forward quick. Don't worry about stopping too many players, just keep it simple and beautiful!

Tell him to keep playing Robbo! :thumbsu:

He might not get Judd numbers but he brings so much to the table.
So much pressure and energy, exactly what we needed after the Pies game which now is a distant memory.

Good work Ratts and MC!

The way he attacks the ball, he's ahead of Grigg I recon.

I have to agree with this. Robbo adds massive energy to our team & a reckless hardness that very few on our list can offer. Expect the unexpected from this boy.

What. The. ****. I hope his red card was enforced for this gibberish.

you need to have adaptable game plans
essentially we struggle against sides that play the rolling zone/cluster, and when numbers are pushed into our fwd line, giving fev no room
our skills/decision making can't stand up to holding onto the ball until an option arises, we either select the incorrect option or skill error turns the ball over
we have a tendancy to move the ball slow and stutter against the rolling zone, look much better when we take the game on and move ball quickly
young team that will learn
geelong dont play the cluster, so the man on man game plan worked
perhaps the thinking is that man on man against a team that plays the cluster breaks up our srtucture and team balance

my vote goes to ratts, his heart and soul is true blue and overall a tick for his coaching this year, target was to make the 8 and looks like that will be achieved

he can experiment but at times late to make changes eg Hartlett on White, I was screaming for him to make a change...
