Why isn't Brett Voss in our best 22 anymore?

Over the past 3 seasons Voss has played 68 out of a possible 72 games, only missing a 4 game patch in 2004. This year he's played 5 out of 10.

Even given the mountain of injuries, he is now magically not in our best 22 anymore, when previously he was a certain on field starter.

Does Ross Lyon not rate him?

I hope with leigh fisher out for the next few, Vossy can cement a spot down back where he's made his name. He is an effective pinch-hitting forward, but surely the backline suits him best.

I think this will be the last season of Brett Voss. He is getting a little slower and i'm not sure the backline suits him like it did 2-3 years ago. Otherwise you can never question his courage or committment.

Play him as a FP

If you play Voss as a backman, who do you leave out of our back six ?

Choose one of: Leigh Fisher, Sam Fisher, Max Hudgton, Jason Gram, Brendon Goddard, Matt Maguire.

Baker will sometimes play back as a tagger, Sam Gilbert has gone past Voss this year.

I like the idea of playing Voss forward, especially if Riewolt is going to spend time pushing up past the wing to take marks.

A real issue for us this year is that when we push back to fill defensive holes, we have no one to kick to when the ball is turned over.

Maguire ATM. :D Based on last night I'd choose Voss over Gwilt. Even if Voss were on the bench we'd have been better able to cover for L Fisher's injury. I agree with your comments on Gilbert though.

I agree with the frustration of the empty forward line. Gerhig needs to be allowed to stay at home in the attacking 50. Make the FPs chase back on a fullback who tries to lead Gerhig up the ground. Then when there's a turnover we'll have G-Train vs a second best defender.

Don't think goddard will be returning anytime soon, so he can take his spot or leigh fisher's for now. Gram, S fisher and gilbert can be the rebounders. Though, I like gilbert on a wing, he likes to run and carry. Hard to match up with his height and agility.

Voss has never been quick, but have we seen that side of his game exposed?? His endeavour is unquestionable, one on one he is good and he can fill a variety of roles.

I hope Ross Lyon can find a spot for him. Would be a shame to see his career go down the...

Voss is not in our best back 6 anymore and wasn't last year either, he/GT try to reinvent him as a pinch hitting forward last year and worked to some success but he goes missing a lot these days and is not quick enough to hold done a spot in the backline, example is in the Swans semi fianl I think it was where Ryan O'Keefe killed us due to Voss' lack of speed.

He has been figured out and exposed too often in the backline and there isn't enough room in the forward line for him unless kosi is in the ruck. At best he could get a spot on the bench but is not guaranteed anymore.

Agree with voss over gwilt, imo gwilt doesn't have the ability to take the next step, especially if he's gonna be played as a key position backmen.

Yeah Gwilt is NOT a KPP backman, good on Lyon for trying him there but it's clear he's not up to it.

Have i missed something? Or can we now all magically tell after 6 games in a position whether or not that player has a future there?? Last time i checked young key position defenders take time to develop in that role. Does anyone honestly expect him to blanket some of the games best forwards after such few games?
Im not saying he is or isnt a KP defender, but ffs give the boy a chance and let time tell. I hope he proves the over-reactive supporters wrong.

If Gwilt is soooooo bad, can someone please show me a young key position defender who has consistently stamped his name on games of football with 10 games experience??

I think it's plain to everyone that he isn't a KPP backmen because of the fact he is head shorter than every other kpp forward. I saw at one point that lyon had him on Ottens for about 5-10 minutes before the end of the 3rd quarter. We were lucky they only entered 50 once or twice in that time but ottens still got a goal.

S Fisher 191
Hudgeton 191
Ben Rutten 191
N Carrol 191
Mal Michael 190
Basset 190
Hunter 190
Leo Barry 184

Gwilt is 188. Ottens is 202 - he will dwarf most KP defenders, not just Gwilt.

Has any forward humiliated him yet?

I have no doubt that we would have been closer to Geelong on Sunday if Voss and Thompson had played, but I wouldn't have taken Gwilt or Gilbert out. Gilbert is starring, and I didn't see much wrong with Gwilt's game on Sunday.

On the other hand, Armitage is spending no time on the ground, and Birss & Fiora aren't doing much.

I think the game has passed voss - but he wouldn't do a worse job than say Blake or Fiora. They get picked every week without question it seems. I don't think andrew thompson should of been rushed back after missing 4-5 games, he needed a hit out in the VFL.
