OK, so having been on neutral, Dogs and Hawks boards it is pretty clear many fans are split on who won this trade. If you don't know by now;

-Hawks get Lake and pick 27.
-Doggies get pick 21 and pick 41.
-Lake takes a massive pay cut of up to $200k per year.

Who won this trade (and why, if you can be stuffed typing)?

Hokay, this is the way I see it;

Last year Lake was Hawthorn's main target, but the dogs were never on the same page dispite Lake being out of favour.

The talks came back up this year as of only three days ago as far as I have heard, and both teams stopped to think that this had massive potential to be;

- A win for Lake, because now he is able to spend his last year or two on a list that will (or at least should) be a GF contender. He is also thought to be a player that will only put his all in if he thinks it will mean something, perhaps meaning he will lift at the Hawks.

- A win for the Dogs, because Lake was a free agent next year and wanted out of the club. In other words trade him now or get next to nothing next year. It also upgrades their third pick from 27 to 21 and also gives them 41. Another thing is Lake was never going to be there for their next stage, so why keep him now rather than get on with rebuilding?

- A (major) win for the Hawks, because we obviously have a major weakness in the backline with Schoey being our only true KPD. Now with Lake there, not only can Schonemakers take the 2nd best forward instead of the first, but it will also allow Gibson to run complete riot against opposition. Then, of course, the added bonus of Lake maybe being a mentor for Schoey, as they seem to have very similar personalities - and all this for pick 41 and a few spots down from 21 to 27. He reportedly will only cost us $300k-$400k per year, too.

I think the Hawks - but we may need to wait 5 years to see what pick 21 is doing.

Lake missing puts a massive hole in the Dogs backline for the next few years and the Hawks pick up a very good backman - you would think he will take Gibson's role allow Gibson to play free. He reads the play and spoils so well and with out an opponant would be really damaging.

Know one would know if Lake would have walked at the end of next year so not sure that is a valid point. I would be very happy if I was a Hawk. As a dog I would not be sure what to make of it.

Hawks won the trade.

Despite what bigfooty tells you Lake is still a very good full back and they picked him up for peanuts.

If we draft well and the hawks don't win a flag we could come out on top but that's a total gamble.

It seems like Lake is the winner out of all of this. He clearly wasn't enjoying playing in a losing side with not many years left in the body.

Win-win for mine.

Dogs are at least 5 years from competing for a flag (In their own coaches words), so why not trade out a guy who won;t be there then and look to get in another young kid, plus get some salary cap relief in the process??

Hawks, we needed a big full back, and now have one. Gave up an early 20s pick for a late 20s pick in the process whilst losing a pick in the 40s.

Dogs get at least 3 picks in the top 21, we hopefully have the final piece of the puzzle. No losers here

Yeah because that Young pick 21 is certainly a promising player!

If almost any other club gave up a 2nd rounder and pick upgrade for almost any other 30 year old, they'd be a laughing stock. Hawthorn's nuggets are all gold at the moment... apparently.

Think the Dogs did pretty well, think Lake himself has done very well, and don't even think the Hawks have done that badly either. Pretty close to a win-win.

Hawthorn clearly - he will help them immeasurably. I don't think some people realize how good Lake is - he is miles better then any key back they had
