Mike Colman has written a brilliantly cynical piece in today's Courier Mail's Sportsday (inside back page).

The premise is the current rumours that the Broncos intend to move Wayne Bennett on after 2010. I can't find a link to it on-line (can anyone else?) but I reckon it is worth me typing out some of the best bits.

Editor (reading from another publication): Listen to this: A team source told mX a player revolt was a distinct possibilityif Bennett was pushed from the club before he was ready.

I whistled. Those unnamed team sources are hard to find and what's more, this revolt wasn't just a possiblility - it was a distinct possibility. I asked the boss to read me the quotes which backed up the player revolt claim.

"There aren't any," he said. "But don't worry about that. Just get down to Red Hill and bring me back some pictures of the players picketing the joint. And don't come back without some comments from an unnamed source.

Later on in the article...

Then I saw him, half hidden by the Today Tonight outside broadcast van.

An anonymous high-ranking club source. My biggest contact in the game.

I didn't have time to give my usual signal that I wanted to talk - a red flag in a pot plant on the balcony of my apartment followed by a coded ad in the Collectibles section of the Weekend Shopper - so I came right out and asked him.

"What's the story?" I said pulling out my notebook. He sang like a canary.

Back in the office I stuck some paper into my trusty Remington J9 manual typewriter and tapped away as the boss looked over my shoulder, his smile as wide as Sam Thaiday's shoulder pads.

Flabbergasted Broncos officials, gun-shy after last year's Benny for Bondi fiasco, are secretly seething that Wayne Bennett has served the first serious salvo in a fearsome fire-fight aimed at staying put past 2010 and will push ahead with succession plans despite a distinct possibility of a player revolt, a club source has revealed exclusively to Sportsday in a wide-ranging emotional interview.

Gotta love this job.

Do yourself a favour and try and hunt down a copy of the article. It embodies all that is good and bad about modern day newspapers. A little gem hidden in a pile of mediocrity!

Sounds like Dragnet re-visited.... link

Brother William (Liam Sullivan), the Timothy Leary-like drug guru, pushes Joe too far and Joe says:
"Marajuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb. So don't you try to equate liquor to marajuana, Mister, not with me. You may be able to sell that jazz to another pothead, but not to somebody who holds some sick kid's head while he vomits and wretches on a curbstone at 4:00 in the morning. And when his legs get enough starch into them so he can stand up and empty his pockets, you can bet he'll have a stick or two of marajuana. And you can double your money he'll turn up a sugar cube or a cap or two. So don't you con me with your mind expansion slop. I deal with kids every day. I try to clean up the mess that people like you make out of 'em. I'm the expert here, you're not."
Brother William: "I may even sell you a few [ideas!]"
Friday: "You couldn't sell me directions to the men's room!"
Brother William: "I'm not only news, my friend, I make news. Big news."
Friday: "So did Judas."

... of course having not read in full, only suggesting maybe influenced by..;)
