Speaking of pre-season matches,

Why can't the SANFL restart the old pre-season competition, 4 rounds (I say 4 because that's about how many trials you would play before the minor rounds anyway) then semi's and a grand final.

Bring in a 10th team from the amateur league or something to make up the numbers.

Anyone got any comments on why they shouldn't do this, it always drew a good crowd.

I totally agree with you! Surely the likes of the old Foundation Cup could be brought back to life - there is plenty of support out there for local footy that's for sure! A pre-season comp is far more interesting than trial games and it helps to fill the trophy cabinet! :D

Does anyone honestly remember who won past Foundation Cups? Or honestly care ? The only one that springs readily to mind for me is Woodville in 1988 as it had a huge crowd and was (called) their first senior premiership.
Whilst I agree it would probably be more interesting than just trials I know whenever North were knocked out in the past I didn't really care that much.
How about playing trials against WAFL,VFL and NTFL teams?

Yeah, Glenelg beat Woodville in 1990 if I am correct. I beleive it was The Eagles who won the last ever Foundation Cup pre-season before they just gave away prize money in a match of the week during the season.

Well, If we wanted something like an FA Cup, with a lot of sides, involve the amateur league and maybe a few country league teams. It could be worth it. Just to make the competition interesting, but remember, it's not just knockout. The old Foundation Cup has 3 minor rounds, like the Wizard Cup(which has gone back to knockout this year) then finals.

Anyway, I beleive something like this should come back into effect, just to get the crowd back to local league. Even, maybe hiring lights to light up suburban grounds for night matches or evening games at 5-30 or 6 would be an interesting idea.

There is more than just 1 ground with lights, Alberton is not the best, but good enough, Unley isn't too bad with the lights it has, just a few more and it would almost be as good as Norwood in the 80's. Then you have Adelaide Oval as a possibility, and then Kilburn Oval, amateurs, but they have good standard lights, as with Salisbury North Oval, Centrals could utilise this ground.

I say people, get back to the local league, with the AFL going into it's doom and gloom years in terms of money and the bad things going on with half the clubs, AFL may be no more in the years ahead.

Get back to the SANFL. Remember the days where SANFL pulled 18,000 a game.

If you want a FA cup make it WAFL, SANFL and VFL clubs.

A few Melbourne clubs might kark it, but the AFL is doing just fine.

Yes, and yes.

I'd like to see it come back. Anything with a cup attached to the end of it, and a set fixture of matches, has to be more interesting than a loose collection of poorly-advertised trial games.

In lieu of that, I'll be content to attend a few trial matches. By that stage of the off-season, any footy is good footy.

Even if they make some sort of pre season comp it still will be regarded as trial games by at least half the clubs as I doubt the prize money would be anything substantial. The biggest hurdle would be financial in getting a sponsor and to ensure the competition breaks even or only realises a small loss.

The idea of including WAFL and VFL teams is probably not a bad thing if the costs can be covered. Including NTFL teams would be good although I'd say the southern clubs should avoid playing in Darwin until the end of March due to the weather.

Unfortunately like a lot of things these days money will be the big issue as to whether something like this could happen but there is certainly a market out there for it.

AFL No More?????

I dont think so!!!!!

Yes I remember the days when the SANFL pulled 18,000 a game, only one fixture has come close to pulling big crowds on a regular basis in the last decade.........

Looking forward to the real traditional rivals squaring off in round 1 at The Parade!

Interesting to hear Flash's comments on 5AA Thursday night re: The WAFL and their "Local" Derby between South and East Fremantle - a minute attendance! His words were 300 people, doubt it was that low, but I remember people on these boards saying that Fremantle has more supporters than all other clubs outside the AFL!

Pfft!!!!!

The SANFL always has and always will be the next best competition on offer next to the obvious!

Who could forget the all-in brawl on the wing after Scott Salisbury king hit Richard Champion? I was just sitting in front of that - a genuine brawl the likes of which you don't see anymore. Spectators were leaning over the fence to try and have a swing.

Leave the Foundation Cup on the scrap heap of history. The clubs have a hard enough time making ends meet without taking trial games seriously.

I'm suprised Mrs Champion didn't jump the fence and get stuck into Salisbury. She was a fiesty character. Got stuck into us lot once at Prospect for being rude about Richard. Lots of brollie waving and strong language:D .
