Watching the news last night (and reading the paper this morning), it seems Martin is in a race to win a new contract for next year. I find this hard to believe, and I think it's more media speculation rather than the thoughts of the AFC, despite the comments from Martin that he is playing for a spot on the senior list next year.

He is exactly the type of player we need going forward. He is still young (around 22), has added significant size to his upper body over the last 12 months, has quite good disposal by foot and as we saw last year, has great speed. All he needs is a few games to pick up the pace.

Ill be really disappointed if he doesnt get a contract next year. Despite Hentchel proving himself before he got injuried, the club has stuck by him for around 4 years now. Therefore, Martin should certainly get another opportunity next year to realise his potential.

Please AFC - give him another contract!!!

Wow I thought he was contracted for next year anyway? I thought we gave him a 2 year contract last season. Guess not. Surely it'd be an absolute no brainer to sign him up. It ain't as if we have a surplus of promising young mids. If he's not on our list next year it would be a highly questionable decision, to say the very least. I'd be pissed.

Just another example of the media making a story out of nothing.

We have to sign him up. It would be a disgrace if he wasn't given another contract. He looked the goods last year in his 2 games and the fact that he's back playing AFL footy already is clearly a testament to his hard work and commitment. We stuck by Burton, we stuck by Trent - hell we even have our coach come out and say he wants to have another look at Trent to see if he can go on next year. It has to be a media beat up - surely....

This on the AFC website:
Today he admitted to struggling slightly with the speed of the game but was optimistic of having benefited from the hitout.

“It was obviously a great experience to be back out there, and I learnt that I’ve still got a little way to go,” said Martin, who has played three AFL games now since debuting against St Kilda last year.

“I’ve played a few SANFL games now and I’m probably not up to the level I was last year when I played my first AFL game. My reaction time and general speed was just lacking a bit, but if I keep fronting up and keep putting myself out there hopefully that should improve.

I like the cut of his jib. Pretty clear-headed analysis of where he's at.

I cant say for sure, but given the article said he is playing for a spot next year, I just assumed that he was uncontracted for 2011.

Surely they'll sign him up? Playing VERY well before doing his knee last year, and for him to get back into the side so quickly after recovering from that injury to me, speaks volumes about how the footy department rate him.

Basically it's the result of an interview, which I assume he did yesterday. It says that it's his decision making speed which is the issue, not his leg speed.

Personally, I think we have enough retirements and easy delistings without adding Martin to the list. Maybe give him another 12-month contract and review the decision once he's really had time to show his wares after having fully recovered from his knee injury?

his greatest asset is his speed, i hope that with his knee injury he wont lose it, if he has lost a yard of pace it will be hard for him to forge an AFL career

I could be wrong, but I was certain we gave him two years. Perhaps we gave him a baseline contract, and now he wants to show us that he can come back and play well, so he should get a new contract with more money?

In any event, the club will re-sign him if he's coming out of contract. It's a no-brainer.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did give him just a 1-year contract. He was only a rookie list upgrade, not a new draftee. He also had a serious injury and they would want to have as much flexibility as possible with their list management in the event that his recovery did not go well.

And seeing it has gone well, he will most definetley be going nowhere.

He still has some question marks over him, as he admits in the interview. Give him 12 more months to show what he's got and then make a decision about his longer term future.

Right now he's just a rookie who showed a lot of pace before his injury. He didn't look anywhere near that quick when I saw him on Sunday, but the heavy ground probably didn't help. It remains to be seen whether he'll make it as an AFL footballer. I don't think he's shown enough yet to justify a multi-year contract, but neither does he deserve to be given the axe at this stage of his development.

I'm rapt that Brodie has been able to make it back this season. In what has been a tough year hopefully the last few games we'll see a few positives from him.

I must admit that halfway through last year I didn't think he was an AFL player. I'd seen him plenty of times (I'm a Sturt fan) but I thought he was a bit of a lightweight, destined to be a good SANFL player but not destined to succeed any higher.

The St Kilda game was enough to change my mind. He adjusted to the tempo so quickly and the attacking attitude in what was a pretty mediocre team performance was so refreshing. Admittedly we're working off an extemely small body of evidence but I can't help but feel positive about what he may bring to the club in 2011.
