Broken PS3 controller

I think this is the right place for this thread..

Anyway, I recently bought a PS3. I have been playing it fairly regularly but when I went to play it today something odd happened. I went to play FIFA and i got onto the main screen - then my controller seemed to die. Thinking it ran out of battery i plugged it in to recharge although nothing happened. Now it won't turn on at all (as in the red lights do not light up when i press the PS button).

There is hopefully a simple answer to this question that I am too incompetent to answer myself.

i'd try plugging it in and just leaving it for an hour or so
