Of those 3 I'd say only Ball is a natural contested ball winner/clearance player. No doubt Pendles and Beams can play that role as they showed this year, but it takes away from other aspects of their game. Beams obviously had a great season as did Pendles, but they played inside roles. Our outside passing game was shite most of the year and you could put that down to the fact that our best users were having to cover the loss of Ball.

Congratulations. I keep waiting for someone to make this point. Pendlebury, Beams and Swan will be much better creative and attacking midfielders if we can develop more inside players. This is more pressing than finding outside running excitement machines. Consider for a second how many tough, inside players Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney have then compare them to us. IMO Ball is our only pure inside ball winner. As was proven this year, when he goes down our tackle rate at the clearance turns to shite and we leak like a seive. More battering rams please. I would prefer to opt for at least one of the very promising mature draft prospects that can win the ball and tackle hard and mould them to our style. If that happened I wouldn't be upset if we used the others on a pacy mid and a running defender who could kick. Broughten sounds good. Especially if he came for a second rounder but from our Freo friends' report that doesn't seem likely.

I would give pick 20 up for Broughton and Roberton would be a best 22 player and would still have two top 20 picks

i think you need to be abit more realistic. give up pick 20, you must of had a few drinks to many ;-)

I would love it if we had a go at him! Absolute ripper of a deal if we could've traded pick 40!

As much of a fan of GB I am, we wouldn't be able to offer Broughton the role he's best at, smart decision to go to GC.

Theres always more to it. I think it was a foolish move by Freo to offload Broughton...but it may be due to the fact that they needed to free up cap space for Pearce or they are freeing up space for a big play in FA next year for a Buddy etc.

It's clear when Lyon loses faith in a player it is impossible to win it back. This could be Luke Ball again. Lyon is a terribly stubborn person and its his biggest downfall.

In terms of us getting Broughton...I would've loved it. I think he could've slotted straight into defence because he is a sure ball user and shuts down a player.

But in the end, GC can offer more money and probably pay out his contract at Freo. So I doubt we were ever in the market.

He'd be played in defence, and he'd probably provide the most rebound along with Shaw. I'm not sure exactly how good a defender he is but he can't be worse one on one the majority of players we've got there at the moment. He'd be a great addition, and would be far more valuable than Young.
