Was impressed with Browne yesterday. Got first hand to the ball many times in the ruck and found one of our players with many smart taps. He was better than his opponent in the ruck contests yesterday. He gave off a number of nice handballs too as he did against the Lions. Links nicely and has shown he has a nice overhead mark in some of his 9 games in his career so far. He'll get better by the game with extra strength and fitness. Doesn't mind getting on his knees either. Some people in here are saying he can't mark, was well beaten, can't link in set plays. We all know what alcohol does to the brain

Re: Brownes game

I have wondered WTF with the crap that has been spruiked about his previous games, but he got a vote from me for this week. Major improvement in this game, when talking ruckwork. The rest is still neither here or there. Unfortunately for him the rest of the universe knows that he will look for a handball rather than kick. Its something that if he doesnt address will lead to him being a top ruckman at VFL level of below. ;)

Re: Brownes game

If he was able to hit so many of our players with smart taps can someone please explain how we were smashed in terms of centre clearances and lost the clearances overall?

Re: Brownes game

Spot on RT.

The amount of times Jamar and Martin got decisive taps which amounted to decisive clearances was enormous. Browne got a few taps but had no influence, he was beaten.

He is C-grade, Gus is B. I am getting sick of losing contested footy and clearances every single week but we should at least be playing our best ruckman.

Re: Brownes game

He's a hard working toiler, and I respect that.
But he ain't a Premiership ruckman. Too slow, not mobile enough.
Not sure time will make him quicker.

He gets a game until we develop someone better (Derickx) or trade for one.

He's already ahead of graham

Re: Brownes game

Needs to work on his stamina and tackling. Also needs to stop landing on top of the ball, he'll get pinged for that. One or two more pre-seasons and he'd be better than Graham.

Browny got quiet a few clear taps away at the center bounces...

They were either misdirected and went straight to ground...or our boys were not reading his tap outs correctly...or even backing him to get the tap...

He can ruck and jump at the centre bounces...contest at throw ins...punch a ball away at marking contests...

The rest...kicking, contested marking, clean handball away...average at best...

Thought he was the better ruck on the day for contesting...

Re: Brownes game

He played pretty good last night. Still has loads of improvment left but we will need to focus on him lots to get it out of him. If we see him as our ruckman for years then we need to work on him harder than anyone else on our list to get him to his potential best.

His handballing the last 2 games have been 100%. Bit of confidence and he'll be kicking more often

Hope your right there...

Seems to have picked up half a yard of pace and is not looking as spent and red face on the ball as he was against the bombers...

Face just a tad pinkish now...but that could have been due to yesterday's hot weather perhaps...:p...

Re: Brownes game

Just an outside opinion but I'm actually not entirely sure who it was but I think it may have been Browne (correct me if I'm wrong).

I noticed a bit yesterday that as soon as he took possession and someone laid a hand on him he would instantly go to ground and it ended in him being pinged for holding the ball a few times. It almost looked instinctively like his first thought was go to ground and just hold the ball in, hoping for a ball up.

Also thoroughly impressed with Tyrone Vickery, his leading was excellent especially his little half turn feign to double back but then create another lead straight up the middle was first class. Completely fooled Jared Rivers and made him look rather silly in that passage of play.

I think you are mistaking Browne for McGuane. McGuane was doing it all day because he has no confidence in his kicking, so he goes to ground. It was awful.

Re: Brownes game

I thought Browne was good yesterday, got plenty of taps to an open area behind the ruck contest but our guys either fumbled or fell over when approaching the ball. We got beaten by I think 3 or 4 clearances against one of the better clearance teams in the comp, and you can blame the center breaks to the opposition on our onballers. They are far to loose around the contest.

Re: Brownes game

he's a battler I'll give him that but the comment earlier rings true, he aint a premiership ruckman, not unless he improves 100%..which is a chance as he is yet to play 10 games. One of the keys to our improvement will be having a ruckman with the talent of a greg stafford that is can take 8-10 marks, kick a goal or two going forward and take some game saving marks deep in defence

Re: Brownes game

Well Miller did play in the ruck for at least 1/4 of the match

Miller was recruited as a ruck backup was he?

So why did Browne only have 76% TOG and Jamar playing his first game back managed 80% At least when Miller did go in he got a clearance to Brownes none and 4 inside 50s to Brownes none. Pointless blaming him for us being smashed in the ruck. I suppose Post would have been better.

Our midfield is overrated and undersized at this point in time. Too young and too small to make an impact against the experienced bodies of Maloney, Sylvia, and Jones. You can say players like Foley and Jackson are a similar age to them so it's not an excuse but those 3 are better than them hands down. Foley is also classified as undersized considering how short he is making him weaker against taller players.

You also have a vandetta against Browne so any post you make in regards to him should be ignored as it is always infested with bias towards Graham. Browne was good enough to keep the hack in Graham in the VFL. Until Graham plays at least a month in a row of best on ground performances while Browne stuggles he should not play as it is what Browne had to endure. I will accept Graham's appearance back into the best 22 when he deserves to be there. However currently he does not deserve to be.

Our midfield really is overrated, although sometimes I like it when we are in full bloom.

Re: Brownes game

Was it Browne that smashed it into row 20 from the goal square? 1st qtr or 3rd...I was up city end. Point is I reckon he hits contests hard, rucks ok and ok around the ground. Obvious limitations atm re hurting forward but improving week to week. Don't think centre clearances stats have changed much since he's been in. I find the "art" of ruckwork to be 90% luck anyway.
They should smash it forward rather than drop it to their feet.

Re: Brownes game

The most worrying aspect of his game, is that his teammates seemed at times reluctant to give him the ball, presumably because of his poor disposal both by foot and by hand.

Re: Brownes game

He did ok in the tap outs but he doesnt do anywhere near enough around the ground.

The goal Stefan Martin kicked in Q1 was as a direct result of Martin running harder and faster than Browne away from the stoppage and he ended up with 20 meters on him and a goal in open space.

And similiar incidents kept occuring where he just did not have the neccessary tank to play at this level.

Only way he is going to get that tank is by having him play at the top level. Remember Stefan Martin is 198cm and 24 years old with 41 games experience to have adjusted to the required level. Browne is 205cm at 20 years of age and only 10 games to his name.

At Browne's age Martin hadn't even played a match and didn't start playing ruck at senior level until half way through his 2009 season at 22 years of age.
