Bruce makes bold bid
23 August 2005 Herald Sun
Bruce Matthews

ONBALLER Cameron Bruce will try to train at full pace tomorrow in a surprise bid to aid Melbourne's finals push.

Constant treatment has fast-tracked Bruce's recovery from a knee injury and he will be tested to see if he's a chance for Sunday's crunch game against Essendon.

"Cameron will probably train this week. He has been trying to put his hand up every week, so it's pretty exciting around the club. Sandy are playing in the finals this week and we've got a chance to get into the finals," ruckman Jeff White said.

Bruce, who strained a medial ligament, and captain David Neitz, who has a posterior cruciate ligament complaint, were injured against St Kilda three weeks ago. Neitz has been able to continue playing during the recovery phase.

With Neitz starting against Geelong and the Bulldogs, he attracted one of the opposition's key defenders, diluting attention on fellow forward Russell Robertson who has kicked 13 goals in the past two rounds.

Daily physiotherapy treatment, occasionally twice a day, has kept Neitz in the team and similar constant medical attention has given Bruce an outside chance to return before the finals series.

"Neiter's going well. He's so important to our side and it's great having him around," White said.

Brad Miller is another battling to be ready with a strained thigh muscle and he will also try to join training at Optus Oval tomorrow.

The Demons' 22 players from that last-minute victory against the Dogs trained for only 15 minutes at the Junction Oval yesterday before being called into a team meeting.

Defender Matthew Whelan, a late withdrawal on Saturday night with calf soreness, did some run-throughs under supervision while the rest of the senior list, including recall prospects Jared Rivers, Clint Bizzell and Ryan Ferguson, had a light ball session.

What you guys think? just making up some headlines for during the week or is he actually a chance of playing? if so he did awesome on Hird last time would love to see it again.

True that he was playing **** before his injury but if he got to 90 percent fit i would play him there could be no next week. If we where a sure of a spot in the 8 well it would be nice to rest Neitz, bruce, miller, whelan but we r not.

before the Adelaide game though 1/2 our team and more were terribly out of form. Alot were dropped and alot half come back a bit revitalised. I say if he can get out there then get him out there!! If we plan to win on the weekend and especially in the finals he is a vital part of our campaign

I agree - If he is ok to go - then so be it.

I would feel comfortable have a Cam Bruce cameoing in the forward line kicking lots of sausages rolls. No doubt that Robbo is going to be under some immense tagging on Sunday.

Why risk him????

We've beaten two good teams in the last two weeks without him and now we're up against the weakest of the three and you want to rush him back??

He might be able to play a cameo role in the forward line but you could say Neita has been in the same situation the last two weeks and has done next to nothing.

Hard decision. He usually picks up Hird and blanketed him out of the game last time while still collecting a lazy 21 possessions. It’s a risk, because he would probably go to Hird if he played but Hird is just about fully fit and I don’t know about Cam.
We all know how good his best is, but his form this year after that shoulder injury (F*ck you Guerra) has been pretty bad.
Play him. It’s an elimination final.

hird was hardly fit rnd 1 so I cant see even a fit bruce blanketing him this time. last game as captain too..watchout!

I don't want to risk him, although I reckon sticking him in the square would be handy, especially if Miller doesn't come up.

Green Robbo and Bruce as a possible forward line if Miller doesn't player. Neitz could go up the ground a bit more then. Holland is floating 2.

who do you reckon Robbo will get? Ted Richards is gettin the best opposition forward these days but maybe he will take neitz. Andrew Welsh?

I don’t think that Welsh would be good enough to go with Robbo in the air, few defenders his size can. Perhaps McVeigh, but hopefully Fletcher doesn’t play and we can give them a few headaches.

I agree that Neitz should push up more if Miller isn't playing.

i know Welsh can't match it with Robbo but few can at the moment and the bombers are really struggling to find defenders. Mark Johnson often gets the job but after 6 goals vs Carlton i doubt he will be down back

As the week has unfolded it looks more and more likely that Miller wont be playing..............Fergie will come back in and even Whelan is an uncertainty to come back into the side so we may see Bizzel back in the team, im feeling quite confident still if these chnages are made. Have a look at the Bombers outfit and you'll see why
