Why the hell are Carlton playing the best user of the ball in the team as a tagger. I could understand it last year but surely the apprenticeship is over. Carlton need to find a better role for the kid. Let him go head to head on the wing with Montagna this week and let someone else like Hadley be the tagger.

Would he get a game with the Cats?

This isn't meant to degenerate into a pissing contest between Geelong/Selwood vs Gibbs.

Without a doubt I would play him at the Cats. In truth I think he has gone from being just outside Geelong's best 22 last year to easily in the starting 18 this year. I'd probably play him ahead of Mackie in Mackie's role which I think is a big wrap for the kid and shows massive improvement over the summer. I think he would be best suited at Carlton doing the same.

I think he will pass Murphy this year if he isn't wasted as a tagger. To me it looks like he has gained 10 kg's and 5 cm over the summer.

i hate to say this......and i dont want to say it but i am

Gibbs reminds me of Rusty when he tags

he just seems to be always chasing and loses his man in traffic

Let him loose i say!!! We have other players that can tag!!

Obviously I don't know the backgrounds of any of you fellow posters, but I'll go out on a limb and say that I think Brett Ratten and his team may know a little more about football and developing young players than you do. Let's trust his judgement for a while.

Bryce has 15 years of footy ahead of him. We're not likely to play finals this year. Bryce is not gonna start winning games off his own boot in the next few weeks. It just sounds silly when people start up with this "what are the coaches thinking by doing blah blah blah" as if any of you would know better than Ratts. Cut it.

I think that the should definetly be given a more free role through the midfield, even if that is in bursts and he plays the other half of the match up forward, on the wing etc.

Is he really 'tagging' at the moment? I kind of get the impression he's being matched up on someone and choosing to play them close. Maybe just a confidence thing - in time he'll start to run off them a bit more. Looks very dangerous when he gets it though...

I'd love to see him play on a half forward flank/wing, a la Pendlebury. Use his ability to win the football and deliver it well to the forwards, as well as his nose for a goal. Slot Houlihan on the other side, and we'll start to look dangerous up forward, especially with Fisher back at CHF, Edwards showing a bit, and Kreuzer to come into the team. Take a bit of pressure of Fev imo

Firstly, Judd isn't tagging anyone.

Secondly, he wasn't tagging last week. If he was...........then it was he worst tagging job in history as Foley and Johnson (depending on rotations) regulalrly got space on him. Just doesn't run hard enough to tag anyone.

IMO Gibbs was played in the centre square and because he is too conscious of not doing the wrong thing he was very defensive in his approach to playing his man.

He won some clearances, but in general didn't back himself enough. I think that will change this week.

I actually think gibbs should go back to the seconds for a few weeks so he can once again dominate games and develop his confidence. he will be a playmaker and has the skills but just does not have confidence at the highest level

Gibbs' disposal > Judd's

Thats why he was playing seniors SANFL so young. They'd back him into space and he'd nail his target 50 metres away every time, unlike the rest of the Bays who had notoriously bad disposal.

Ever seen Judd play SANFL?

No?

Well I've seen plenty of them both at AFL senior level.

Gibbs has good disposal, and maybe over time you will be right. But right now your wrong. Can't be any clearer than that.

Think BB mistakenly wrote Judd instead of Gibbs. Full waiting room at the clinic possibly.

Mistake?

What, you mean when I wrote:

Nope. No mistake. Simply meant that Gibbs disposal in the SANFL is irrelevant when comparing to Judd, because Judd has never been down to that level......hence, never been seen playing in the SANFL........and if he did it would be rather embarrassing at how good his disposal would be.

Lunch time ATM.:thumbsu::D

I'd put Gibbs' disposal ahead of Judd's, I think I read somewhere he had the best disposal effeciency ever recorded for a 1st year player. It might be close if you look at Judd's career but for the time being Gibbs' disposal is far better than a recovering Judd's.

Gibbs tagged or played on a dangerous forward almost every game last year and then he starts the season picking up Foley. Come on...is there any doubt he was give a defensive assignment last weekend?

And to Jezza you beauty...For me half the fun of bigfooty is talking about stuff like this and putting up your opinions. If someone disagree with my assessment and gives a reason why Ratten doing it this way is better, that's great, I learn something or get a perspective I hadn't considered. Saying the coach has more experience and knows what he is doing isn't really adding anything that we don't already know.

I would have thought Gibbs learnt enough of a defensive game last year when Pagan played him in the BP, and then off half back. I, like another poster stated, would play him on a wing, with bursts starting in the centre square.

Here here!

He is definately not a tagger.
