Nathan Buckley was said to be one of the best users of the ball in the game.

Precision kicking, almost always finding its target. Great awareness, just knew where to give it off.

Is Pendles far off? Just lands targets out of nowhere, either by hand or foot, every week.

There was one instance last night where Pendles snapped a kick that landed straight on Cloke's chest 30 metres away.

Incredible skills!

id say pendles closest comparison is with, dare i say here, james hird.

i see buckley as swan's predecessor. pendlebury on the other hand is smooth as silk, has all the time in the world to decide what he will do while others race blindly by. hird played his entire career in a similiar way.

Yeah there is a bit of a Hird factor in Pendles.

I wouldn't compare Bucks to Swan though.

Swan breaks through packs, and reads the ball, which is similar to Buckley, but disposal isn't anywhere near Bucks' level.

Be interesting to know the kicking efficiency of Bucks, Hird and Pendles.

Bucks was a far better user than Pendles, and Pendles is a very good user in his own right. Bucks is the best kick of a football I have seen in a Collingwood side.

P.S I don't see the Swan comparisons, to be honest...Buckley was a far more aesthetic and all-round talented footballer.

I think you meant to say Buckley was a swan compared to the ugly duckling Hird... Buckley was twice as smooth and silky as Hird ever was (I always thought of Hird as a workhorse) and i don't see any similarities in Buckley and Swan.

I saw Buckley play at his very best.
No one on our current team comes close, Buckley even singlehandedly won a game off his own boot against Brisbane at 34 or 35 years of age.

We had that Reid and Clement thread and now we have this? Lets not forget how good our champions were just because the team right now is better overall.

Pendles is something special though with his ability to slow time, but he is not the game winner Buckley was. Swan is more like a rich man's prime Licuria than Buckley IMO.

Edit. Buckley nearly carried the likes of Mckee, Freeborn, Betheras, Steinfort, Lonie, a useless Davis and a young BJ/Dids/Taz over one of the greatest teams in history and carried a team with guys like Lokan, Richards, Kinnear, T-Rex Walker, Cam freakin Cloke and Richard Cole getting regular teams to the 2nd spot on the ladder.

If we had Bucks running around instead of Pendles no one would even bother giving a crap about the season because we would be unbeatable, and there would be no way that Bucks would have anyone giving less than 100% on the field come finals time.

No one, NO ONE! will ever come close to bucks kicking abililty, outstanding, 50 metres out from a standng start would end up in the stands.
Amazing kick of the footy.
i heard somewhere leon has 100% efficeincy or something like that, that cant be true:confused:

Leon has kicked out with 100% efficiency for the last 75 (?) times, as of last week. I am sure that's the stat you're referring to.

Leon's kicking, including both field and kick-outs, has been absolutely outstanding this year and is closest to Buckley of late, IMO.

Bucks quite comfortably.

Pendles has a knack at times to just weight the kick too much and opposition players can chop it off (see last night where he went for a 20-25m spot up inside the corridor and it was chopped off.

Bucks would never miss that type of kick. Also, Bucks had a bag full of kicks to choose from. His range and depth in his kicking was and is far superior to Pendles'.

Pendles is a wonderful ball user but Bucks was something else.

Pendles reminds me of Jimmy Hird more then Bucks - always seems to have that extra second in traffic to dispose of the ball.

Pendles maybe a bit better with creative hands inside, but he can try and be a little too clever at times. Buckley by a mile with some space, probably the best ever.

Bucks could slam through 55 m goals from either boundry line - played, and expected others to play, at the highest level, Mr Intense. Pendles not as much penetration, but oh so much time, a real Mr Cool!

Had Bucks had someone like Pendles in his side would have "enjoyed" himself a little more I dare say.

Pendlebury's the best handballer I've seen in the last 15 years, but his kicking's a bit overrated at the minute.

Buckley's the best kick I've seen, and a significantly better player overall. And I'd have Pendles 2nd in the AFL right now behind Ablett - Buckley was just on another level.

Pendles is a better kick then Hird, who's kicking was average for the most part unless your talking snap kicks which he was elite at.

Hird was and is more so since retirement over rated, he was that era's Judd everything he did was "special" and his poor kicks or lost contests were largely over looked. Great player but over rated and I don't see a Pendles comparison.

To answer the OP Pendles better by hand, Buckley better by foot.

Agree, great post.

Nathan Buckley has become severely underrated since he retired.

Essendon supporters overwanking of him is pretty sickening.

In terms of taking my personal mantle of favourite Collingwood player, Pendles was the heir apparent from game one.

I don't think they are similar players at ALL, but both are the best Collingwood player during their era.

As wierd as this sounds, I actually think Pendlebury is underrated. I don't think people realise how good he actually is. If he had the pace most other midfielders have, he'd be about as good as Judd in his own way.

Pace is pretty much the ONLY thing he lacks.

Buckley was the better player but Pendles is great in his own right too. I don't think you can really compare the two. You most certainly can't really compare Buckley to anybody as he is just that much better than most, imo.

Buckley by a long way.
Pendles is a great player, but has a long way to go to even be compared to Bucks.
That's not to say he can't be as important, but the years will need to be put in before he approachs Bucks record.

That last statement is a comparison...

I remember going to Vic Park to see our new recruit N. Buckley in his first practice game against St Kilda. He got the ball on the wing for his first touch in Magpie colours and just launched a 65m drop punt deep in to the forward line. Everyone just went "Phwooooar!" and then we all had a chuckle.

And that's pretty much how it was for the rest of his playing career in Black and White. Best Collingwood player I've ever seen.

The only thing I can think of that Pendles could be better than Buckley is his evasiveness. He always looks like he has plenty of time on his hands because he can sum up a situation quickly and dodge around players. Of course that could all come down to playing style because Buckley was pretty underrated for his contested work.
