We'll be OK.

Franklin will get $900K the first couple of years. Then the next 3 years, he'll get a massive $1.6M or so - just when Goodes, ROK, LRT etc are retiring. In the last few years, he'll get $700K or so..

In 6-7 years time though, $700K will be like $350K today, so it would be an Everitt type salary. It won't sink us. Plus, if Buddy wants to retire in year 7 - that's fine too, we won't have to pay him anything.

im not sure that's correct that he retires we don't have to pay him

$1.6M!!!!! WHOOOOAAAA lets hope there are no big contract renewals in those years!

Even if big contract renewals happen during that year, like Hanners for example, they would look to structure it to fit around Buddys.

That's what his manager said live on Radio.

But regardless, based on the fact that the salary can seems to double every 7 years or so (according Adrian Anderson, Former AFL Operations manager), $700K in year 7 for example, will be like $350K today.

This is risky but brilliant move by the club.

Yeah I heard his manager, so maybe there is a loophole, but then why not target every star with extra long contracts?

Yes hopefully the salary cap increases, but you are still potentially paying out 3 years in 1 or clogging your list for 3 years so down a spot and even its the equivalent of 300k in the future, its still money you cannot spend on improving the list.

I think it might be a case of miscommunication. Maybe we don't have to pay him, but his salary will still be counted under the cap.

Yes so it still reduces the cap space is the issue, lets say its heavily loaded in the middle and he retires 3 years short, we have to count say 700k a year for 3 years in our cap and keep him on the list or count 2.1 million in our cap in one year, neither prospect appeals to me.

Maybe we don't physically pay him but why hamper ourselves that much?

We don't have to pay him BUT the payments stay in our cap.

For instance if he retired in 2021 after 8 years, He won't receive him 2022 payment but it will still count in our salary cap.

yeah so whilst we can physically bank the cash and not transfer it to his account, we still have a reduced salary cap for possible a few seasons

That's correct.

Guess it gives Buddy the incentive to play out the 9 years then...

well why retire

just turn up and refuse to go

Highly unlikely he'll play until he's 35 and even more unlikely that we'll be paying him to sit on the sidelines.

I don't know how people can criticise the contract without knowing what's in it. It's not as simple as 10 mil for 9 years

Unless there is clauses for his early retirement then it will be exactly that simple.

From what Pickering has said it sounds like there are clauses for early retirement in there.
I really do hope so! As much as I dislike Buddy the footballer and/or the man, if we can get him away from any other club with a longer contract without compromising out future. With enough dosh to still pay our youth in contract renegotiation in the upcoming years. Then lets get it signed and lets go and win this bloody flag.
