A mate went last year, I think it's one of those things you really need to not only attend, but fully embrace to understand what it's really about. One thing I remember his talking about a bit was when he was at a huge wooden temple they created for people to basically note down their thoughts and fears, before they are "released" when they burn it down towards the end of the event. He has been through some heavy shit, and ended up talking for ages to some random guy while he was in there who was also dealing with some heavy stuff. They didn't see each other again until they randomly bumped into each other after watching it burn, and just hugged each other in tears.
It's proclaimed in the general media as a massive sex/drug orgy, but it can be a hell of a lot more than that if you want it to be. It's essentially it's own little community that works on gifting instead of money, where you're free to be whoever you want to be. I just hope they continue to discourage the festival "tourists" who turn up and want to treat it like a freakshow/Stereosonic where a guide does everything for them, although I'm guessing (much like the Doofs in Australia) it'll slowly get messed up by the meth/juice heads. If you get the chance, and it's something you think you'd enjoy, then definitely make the trip.
