No one has mentioned Sony yet? Are they not as good because they don't have the technology of more experienced and traditional brands? How do they rate

I don't know if someone will have another go at me for giving advice but here we go.... Sony's dont have the best lenses. They have the technology but they don't have the lens to cope with that technology. Some people rate them, IMO I haven't seen one that has met the match of a Nikon or Canon or even Kodak which are a tad cheaper and better.

Why don't Canon advertise their digital zoom, or do these models not have digital zoom?

They have digital zoom just about every camera will have it, most will have more digital zoom than optical. The companies dont advertise them as such because people should go for optical zoom - as thats better for zooming than digital.

What sort of distance do you get per x of optical zoom. For instance if I were at a footy game how close would a pic of a player in the centre square be from the boundary? Would I just get a pic of them from head to toe, head to hips or head and shoulders?

If I had 10x would I get a pic like this?

or like this?

and what type of storage is the best to get?

You won't get a 5MP for that price.. whoever said that.
You can get a decent 3.2MP camera for that price. If you buy a 4MP for around $400, the quality may not be so good. For that price, the 3.2's will be at the higher end of the scale. It's not just the MP's, the quality of the camera, ccd's and lens mean a hell of a lot.

You will probably get somewhere close to the first photo, but optical zoom means nothing unless you have a decent lens. It depends what you want to pay. Also, with the storage, each camera comes with a specific type. I would choose one with SD, as it is the most common, and usually the cheapest.

well.. it depends.

West Coast Stre- define where you are sitting. Centre wing? Goals?

If you buy a digital camera with say about 6-8meg, 10x optical zoom and what ever digital zoom, you may then get close to the bottom photo (not the top). You need a highier meg camera to be able to handle the cropping in via digital zoom, without giving you a totally crappy/noise/grainy photo.

10x optical zoom means - 70 metre will appear at 10metres. Workout how far you are away from the bounce. Then you should be able to determined whether you can get those photos you've posted. IMO- you will get close but the quailty wont be there that you might be hoping off.

I use a digital SLR 6meg camera, with a 200-400 lens. And i can just get the top photo. Mind you i'm about 5 rows back.

Yes, SD cards are what more camera's are changing too.

Nikon/Canon/Kodak/Richo- all take SD cards, but started off with CF.
Olympus/Fuji- take XD
Sony- Memory Sticks.

SLR cameras will take CF though, they are getting up to 4G cards now.

Just got the Nikon Coolpix 4100 for $499 with a free Epson printer and a free 128mb USB storage 'thingy'. Wanted to get the 4800 for an extra $200 because it has 8x optical zoom but they aren't released til Dec and I can't wait. Pretty good value for a monkey.

Actually its the model before D60, the 300D is upgraded in the ISO settings. I've had no problems with it, had it for about 2 years nearlly 3 years. The body holds the image, and yes has settings to help do the lighting and all that. But get the best lenes you can. I'm finding on my camera the "L" series lenes are holding up a lot better. Sharpness wise they are jsut fantastic, pricey but fantastic.

If you want a cheap SLR camera then 300D is fantastic, don't have to spend a lot of money, therefor you can buy the best lens!
Sorry to bother you again, but I've just been looking at the Pentax *ist DS and the Olympus Evolt E-300. I'd like to know what you think of them in comparison to the EOS-300D? I'm sort of leaning towards the Evolt.
