I'm going to have a new computer put together for me shortly, something along the following lines

Intel core i7 870
Kingston 8 gig ram
1 TB hard drive
Nvidia GT video card
Antec power supply
Gigabyte motherboard
2 x Blu-ray drives
Windows 7 64 bit

For the computer types, does this package sound reasonable, with great quality components?

You'd need to be more specific and include models/specs rather than just brands in order to get an opinion on whether the quality is "great". Depends also on what you're going to use it for; posting on BF doesn't require a beast.

Kingston, Antec, Gigabyte - all respected mainstream brands, which is a good start.

2 bluray drives?

The Bluray drives also play DVD's, right?

If so I can burn from one drive to the other

My usage is pretty much web browsing, Microsoft Office Word and Publisher, movie inventory programs, VHS to DVD transfers, comic book readers, paintshop pro, picasa and a couple of little games like mahjong & solitaire.

My son uses messenger & world of warcraft, my wife uses the same sort of stuff as me, but adds Worlds, Gunbound and Guild Wars.

So she wants good high end gaming capability.

What configuration would you recommend Ron?

Heheh, I typed out a War & Peace response before deciding not to post it.

Buying a PC is quite a personal decision for me, perhaps equivalent to the way other people might look upon buying a car. Whilst I've done quite a lot of research, I'm not an expert and have restricted my analysis to specific brands & price points. My knowledge isn't well-rounded enough to suggest a mainstream build, and my recommendations would be skewed by my personal preferences and biases.

I strongly recommend opening an account at whirlpool.net.au and posting a question on the Desktop forum asking for build suggestions. Be sure to post your budget, what you intend to use the PC for, and what parts you do/don't need, e.g. monitor - there are some really knowledgeable people there who will provide sensible suggestions for a complete build. Just be aware that a lot of people ask for this sort of advice, so be polite and patient.

A new mainstream platform known as 'Sandy Bridge', to be released in the next week, promises to be a game-changer and is worth serious consideration. I don't normally advocate jumping aboard cutting edge technology, and details have been kept under wraps, but Intel tend to get these things right. If it's a lemon like Windows Vista, you'll hear about it soon enough. AMD has an equivalent codenamed 'Bulldozer' on the way, if you prefer them over Intel.

Waffling...go to Whirlpool!

It does sound interesting and I will more than likely be upgrading soon.
Saying that, I have one of the original quad cores that came out (Presler) and even in this day and age I can ramp up a game to top specks and play it without any lag, even with Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic settings on full charge.

Sometimes I think it's just progress for the sake of progress....BUT then again, I need to keep up with it I guess
