BYRNES ON THE MOVE

Monday, March 1
FIONA WELSH

GEELONG has promoted exciting young rookie Shannon Byrnes to the senior list after a promising debut in the Wizard Cup series.
Byrnes, 19, received the good news after training on Friday that he will be a senior player for at least the next eight weeks while former rookie Will Slade is on the long-term injury list.

Slade, a former rookie who was elevated in 2003, has oestitis pubis which he suffered towards the end of last year and that has flared up over the pre-season.

Club football operations manager Garry Davidson said the usual treatment of rest and pilates had not worked, and a specialist from Queensland had been called in to help speed up Slade's recovery.

Coach Mark Thompson said Byrnes deserved some media attention after his debut for the Cats against Port Adelaide in Cairns and followed up on Saturday with another good performance in their 20-point win over Carlton.

``He's very exciting,'' Thompson said of the former Murray Bushranger.

``A lot of people were talking about players who played their first game last week, obviously not too many people watched him in Cairns otherwise you would have been writing about him too,'' he said after the Cats' quarter-final victory at Optus Oval.

Geelong is now one match away from a Wizard Cup Grand Final berth and will meet Melbourne at the Telstra Dome on Friday night in their semi-final clash.

Thompson said reaching the finals of the pre-season competition gave everyone extra confidence.

``It's great for everyone involved,'' he said.

``We've played two pretty hard games on quality grounds and against real competition. You gain experience and that's why we want to do well next week.''

Byrnes, in his second year as a rookie, was still coming to terms with his elevation after taking the long road to making the senior list.

He said he came close to being promoted last season, but a shoulder injury put paid to his aspirations.

``I've done it the hard way (getting on the senior list), but it's definitely worth it,'' he said after Saturday's game.

``I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, being at an AFL club I'm happy to be here.''

The Cats may rush back Gary Ablett this week after playing half a game in the VFL on Saturday, displaying some flashes of his usual style.

Thompson said Ablett, who had recovered from a groin injury, was too good to ``waste playing in the reserves''.

that was to big for me to type:(

Great news, the second he touched the ball he had the dynamite power of ablett but with more speed.

He will still have to work on maybe getting a bigger body and working on his kicking but that will come with age and experience as good players do
