Cale Morton - Superb

Say what you want about his kicking (personally I think its improving all the time) but you can't fault his ability to get the ball and his poise.

26 touches, 3 goals. Best of all, his best quarter was the last when the game was still up for grabs.

Reminds me a lot of Bruce at his best, and Cale will only get better with more gametime.

Put 10kgs on him and he's going to be a superstar. If he's able to play like this when his severly undersized, this only shows how good he could be with a bit of muscle.

Superb? Calm down. Potentially superb, but as I say every week it doesn't matter how many touches you get if you butcher them - for the first three quarters he was torching kicks all over the ground. Number of touches means bugger all when you play the chip around football we do, it's what you do with them and several times under no pressure he botched it today. Good work getting it, but "superb" is a stretch.

If he was a seasoned, 24 year old player I would say today's game was solid at best. However, he is an 18 year old rake, and to kick 3 crunch goals and to find it 26 times is a superb effort for mine. His mobility for his height is quite astonishing.

Not to mention a wet, windy day where even the best players were slaughtering the ball.

Agree with the above, superb for an 18y.o. first year player, but just good for anyone else.

If Morton doesn't get the Rising star nomination this week then i've got NFI, he's earned it before (Hello, adelaide game!!) and been shuned, so he should get it this week.

:D

Incidentally this season has made me so happy I'm whistling Zippedy Doo Dah out of my arseh*le.

Only one thing that bothers me with Morton is that he is a WA lad. If we develop him in the next few years only to see him go back to WA I will be ____ing gutted. Great to watch and is definitely improving though. :thumbsu:

Nah, i dont think thats a worry. If he's getting a game and the side is improving then he's not likely to want to leave.

He also has both of his brothers over here, so he's probably less likely then someone else to want to go home

That's true.

Cale = Gun. How good was his third goal (The dummy onto the right)?

I didn't think he kicked that badly TBH. Aside from kicking it OOF from 45 out with no pressure I thought he was good and he has wonderful poise.

I agree with the Bruce comparison BC, but I think he'll be a better player than Bruce. He has a hell of a lot of potential.

Ive been thinking the same thing how he reminds me of Bruce, I also think he will be a better player than Bruce.

Think he has a bit more natural speed than bruce does.

And you can spin all the positives you want to forget about his kicking but fk me, if a guy is taken number 4 in the draft he should be able to kick better than morton is. He has time on his side so can only hope it will improve.

Palmer was taken at 7 and look at his kicking.

Its only his first year, I know he was taken at pic number 4 but here is some comparrasions to the 3 before him taken in the draft after this round.

Cale= 3 goals 26 disposals at 65% eff

Trent Cotchin= 0 goals, 13 disposals, 62% eff

Chris Masten= DID NOT PLAY

Matthew Kruzer= 0 goals, 10 disposals at 50% eff

I know Kruzer is a ruckman but Chris and Trent are mids just like Cale. A preseason or 2 in the gym and development on efficency we have a potential star player for the 2010 pre-season.

Both of his brothers are very solid builds (the Richmond boy especially) and seeing as size has alot to do with genetics, Cale should be alright with a couple of pre-seasons under his built.

he really did butcher some short passes on the wing even before it rained... but yeah as had been said, that can be fixed and comes together with age... at least he is getting it.. someone get him on ben hollands diet... but just dont let ben influence him at all football wise... then he'd be right

His last five weeks (in possession terms) - 20, 21, 20, 21, 26.

His kicking isn't so bad that you can't be excited about those numbers. Not to mention that getting the ball is half the problem, its no good being a great kick but never getting the pill.

Six goals in the last three weeks too might I add.

If anyone here had seen Cale in the u/18s (I was lucky enough to see some of him) they would know he is normally a very good kick. The step up to AFL pressure and the pace of the game has daunted him at times but rest assured his disposal will improve tenfold on what it is now.

What I like about Cale is he has a bit of arrogance about him. When he puts on more muscle he'll make a hell of a lot of people trying to tackle him look silly, I mean if he is sidestepping them now imagine in 5 years time.

Wasn't he meant to have the pretty much the best foot skills in the draft?
