The lad who has been apparently appointed the new 2nd coming by most of you lot – should have an interesting season.

After a few cheap touches against tanking bottom 4 sides we all got very excited over young Howat.

Not young, small, only has one foot – the ‘kid’ doesn’t seem to be the best prospect in the world but having a rare ability (for a Richmond player) to be able to hit a target has made many of my fellow Richmond fans wet in their pink bits.

Howat 2007.

Expectations?
Position in the side?
How good can he be?
Starting 22 player?

Lets hope Howat is indeed the God many of you make out, or at least a serviceable player for the next 10 years.

I shall keep this thread updated after each Round.

Not sure what your beef with howat is?

Hes not the messiah, but he is a player who has done everything asked of him so far and is putting in a fair old effort to get a senior spot. He wont be elite but if he plays at that sort of standard we'll have a decent soldier in our side who will do a job week in week out.

Expectations? expect him to play 22 games if fit.
Position in the side? wing, collect a decent amount of ball and use it intelligently.
How good can he be? a consistent ball winner and decent user, no superstar
Starting 22 player? definitely

Must say i agree that some seem to overate him, certainly can be in our best 22, certainly can replace Tivendale as an outside midfielder but he will never be a star. His hard running is just what we need though at the moment

Seems to be very overrated.

Daniel Jackson-like.

not at all, hes done more in 5 games than Jackson has in the time hes been at the club.

Overrated? how, has anyone tipped him to be a superstar? wo win a brownlow? to carry us to finals? i think youre just imagining things. Most think hes a good sort and with good reason, until he shows otherwise i'll stick to that, hasnt done much wrong. Good honest player

Expectations? To be a solid player.
Position in the side? Wing, can run all day.
How good can he be? Not much more than a starting player this year but very handy at that.
Starting 22 player? Every day of the week given he's done nothing wrong since making his way into the side.

Bentleigh, you seem very bitter. What's up my friend?

howat isnt a superstar but when he was the only player against the dogs who could hit a target consistently he showed he had a lot to offer

atleast he runs in straight lines unlike hyde and atleast he puts his head over it unlike tivenfail

as i said no world beater but id take him over others

Bentleigh. Look at these stats.(Bit dodge but you'll get the drift.)
Code:
Round Date	vs. K	H	P	M	HO	T	FF	FA	G	B
Round 18	05/08/2006	Western Bulldogs17	5	22	5	0	2	1	2	1	0
Round 19	12/08/2006	Brisbane Lions	15 4	19 8	0	1	0	0	1	1
Round 20	20/08/2006	Carlton 14 2 16 4	0 1 1	2	0	0
Round 21	26/08/2006	Essendon 10 5	15 5	0	2	0	0	1	0
Round 22	02/09/2006	West Coast Eagles13	5	18	5	0	1	0	2	1	0
Now what is wrong with them?? Tell me why you continue to dismiss when one game was against the premier and were smashed and the other was against the dogs, the other three were against bottom 4 but remember you cant choose who you play against, only maximise your chances when they come and that's exactly what he did.

Look pretty good to me. Late bloomer but if thats in his first 5 games I cant see why you are so against the kid. He has his weaknesses, mostly his non-preferred foot but his skills on his preferred are sensational and he can run all day. :thumbsu:

I would just like to make a note - HOWAT CAN KICK WITH BOTH FEET.

Last year after his 1st game people said he only has one foot because he's a left footer. I studied him for every game after this and he kicked with his opposite foot in every situation he needed to and instead of stopping and "wheeling around on the left" like Tivendale he actually kicks it with his right instead.

Just because he's a left footer you all say he is one-sided when there are many right-footers who are far less confident on their opposite than Cam Howat is.

I intend on watching him to see if this is correct as well. I got so caught up with the fact that we were appalling vs Geelong and that Howat amongst everyone else, couldnt hit a barn door with his preferred foot that i didnt pay attention.

Did you just say he wasn't young???
I wish there wasn't a swear filter because I would say you are a ****en idiot, he is 22 years old, what is in your mind considered young???

How old are you, really???

From the dumb things you say on this board this has to be the dumbest.

Since when were the WCE and Dogs tankers? He got touches against a couple of quality sides and on top of that does not seem to just give it away even though we were getting a touch up in a few games. He got 22 against the Cats and had most of them before junk time. He might not be an everyday champion but he should be a solid player for the Tigers in the long run.

Is it possible that we might have found a kid that was over looked by other clubs that might actually be one out of the box. We complain about the fact that other sides pull the odd rabbit out of the hat late in the draft or Rookie draft and we seem to get burnt time and again. Give the kid a chance he is one of a few kids that has stepped in to senior footy and looked like he can get the ball straight up.

FWIW I think he can play 20-22 games around the middle of the ground as he has shown over PS that he has the tank to run. Solid 15-20 possies a week, at this stage I would have him in the 22 he has done enough to warrant it.

Never going to win the hard ball as far as I can tell but does run all day and actually hits his targets. Furthermore he actually tackles, bumps and applies some defensive pressure. In my opinion I doubt he'll ever become a super player but lets face it he's an upgrade on tivendale who does none of the aforementioned and succesfully delivers 10 possies to the oppositions half backs.

For what it's worth I'd have him on a wing in my best XXII.

Excatly we have someone who actually tries when they play football.

UNLIKE A CERTAIN NO.32.

Try being born after 1982.

I was born in 1988.

16 years of dissapointment, the two finals appearances were fun.:thumbsu:

Nothing is wrong with them. Yet I cannot look as much into them as you blokes. I agree it's good he is getting abit of the pill, but you have to look abit deeper.

Carlton, Essendon and Brisbane were all resting senior players and well into tanking-mode by that stage. WCE thumped us so getting touches in the backline isn't really worth much.

Correct, you can only do well against the team you play, but I fear too many people are seeing Howat getting 20 odd touches against Carlton/Essendon a few cheap, meanlingless games and talking it up abit much.

Of course I hope he turns out a star, more realistic a solid best 18 player on a wing; but if one footed, small, can't win his own ball and only has one foot.

Calm down my son.

Not young means not young in AFL terms. Correct, 22 is quite young in life generally but he is not young when you compare him to our first year, 17 year old players.

22 = 6th year AFL player.

Not is not a 'kid'. Rather a middle teir player.

Thats a load of crap.

Is Schulz "OLD" because in your terms it means he is.

KPP is a different kettle of fish to a flanker-type ie. Howat.

Regardless, Schlultz is in his 5th year in the AFL system. He is moving from the young group to the mid-teir.

Schultz isn't wdily regarded any more as young.
Rewoldt or Hughes are.

Yeah, first or second year players are considered young.

Just as Howat is, because he is a second year player.

It just takes others longer to be realised as talent than it does players who make it into the Under 18 AA side.

At least we didn't have to go through the "is he bulking up", "is he going to make it", "this guy is as good as Judd" stuff.

He is a ready made player, boom bam, and no other team got him, thats the best thing, this guy was available for years but we got him first.

:) PERCEPTION!!!! To my way of thinking, his right side ain't too shabby at all. But I ask this (and certainly not comparing him). How do you rate Matthew Knights? If a key criteria is skills on his non-preferred side, I doubt it would be too high? Knights had no right side and the guy was our best player for a decade (maybe sad, but true). There's plenty in the AFL still whose opposite side skils leave a lot to be desired (and a good percentage of them play with us probably).

Howat is a good honest footballer. Won't win Brownlow Medals or best and fairests but at this stage certainly commands a game in our starting 18. Almost embarrassing as a club to have a guy who has played a mere five games and been in the system all of one year have such nsilky skills when we have guys who have been in the sytsem four and five plus years and don't seem to have got any better!

Work ethic and skills will get you a game most weeks in the AFl and this is what Cam Howat brings to the table. His hard-running is an EXAMPLE FOR ALL AT TIGERLAND!

Yes Knights was a champion but its still a weakness none-the-less. I cant remember much from last years game but Howat seemed to wheel a bit in the Geelong NAB game. If that's his major weakness, a right-foot, that isnt so good then that's not so bad but its still a weakness, he makes it up but having a suburb left foot, bit of a trade off really. :thumbsu:
