This was my thinking.

we went out last year and really bolstered what we have in the way of assistants.

Shouldn't be a problem with equalisation, they are going to boost money so the less wealthy clubs can spend more on the football department.

However, our club isn't one that normally likes to spend beyond it's means. I think as we improve and we get more members, larger crowds and the bandwagon rolls in then we will probably spend more on the football department.

I don't think there is any evidence of Ling being a good coach just yet.
Agreed. But according to Jon Ralph on SEN this morning, the mere fact he stood up to Malthouse on the weekend, already makes him a good coach. ;)

I've mentioned it in another thread, but my dream off field appointment for this year would be Lingy on a full time basis. Would love to see him on the boundary line talking to the players ala Choco. He seems perfect for it.
Agree, but the Choco role has clearly not worked all that well for Richmond ;)

We definitely need a boundary coach, if it isn't Brad then we need someone who can have a good conversation with players as they come off the ground. So many players who are having a mare during a quarter who don't seem to extract the digit until after a quarter time break where the coach talks to them. I think if we are going to stop the going-through-the-motions quarters then we need someone who is a take charge kind of bloke directing them, Scott very rarely chats to players on the phone from the vision that is shown on TV.

I'd like to see Ling join our ranks, at the expence of Watson, who I think is probably our weak link in the coaching department. Not sure what role to give Ling though.

... in place of? Or in addition to? And, if in addition to, how might that work?

Either/or. I imagine Walsh will lead a review of the football department's operations post season and such matters will be evaluated.

What is this based on? Because he wasn't a high profile player?

As far I know players (including first hand accounts) rate him highly.

And therein lies the difference. Lingy, possibly like Lenny, may well be more highly rated by the punters for this reason, other things being equal.

No, it's based on which ever part of the team he is given responsibility for becomes our problem area. Last year it was the backline, this year it's the forward line, the fact that wasn't a high profile player has nothing to do with it. It's unfortunate but mediocrity follows him.

I think that's a very simplistic view of it. He had the backline for several years and at various points Grima, Thompson, MacMillan and Hansen have developed under his stewardship.

The team played less defensively as a unit last year and more defensively as a unit (at the expense of going forward cohesively) this year. That was the reason for the problems in conceding or kicking big scores rather than the group of players formally labelled "defenders" or "forwards".

I do believe this is the North Melbourne board where everyone takes a simplistic view.:)

I don't think there is any evidence of Ling being a good coach just yet. They have to do it first to be judged. Plenty of successful ex players and captains have not made it as a coach whether assistant or senior.

No doubt on his credentials he will get very likely be picked up by a club at some stage, and that's understandable. But he is not a "great asset" as a coach to any team until it is actually proven.

To be honest I don't care whether we get him or we don't. Would much prefer our assistants be picked on merit after a throrough selection process, rather than headhunt just because it's Cameron Ling. Melb can have him if that's the case.

Only replying because I quite like your avatar there Saintly.

Well actually not quite correct. If I am not mistaken, Lingy was Captain of Geelong in 2011 when they won their last flag with Chris Scott as coach.

I would be more than a little surprised if Chris didn't provide Brad with a very good recommendation to get Lingy on board, based on what he saw in 2011.

She's not bad that's for sure!

Absolutely Horace and don't get me wrong, on what he has achieved alone he deserves to be picked up.

I wasn't meaning to knock Ling at all, more point out I'm not a huge fan of these 'was a great captain so will automatically be a great coach' thoughts. I think they are quite different roles requiring different strength.

Regardless, he comes across great on TV and I'm confident is helping us at the moment and potentially in future.

Bias aside, Ling would be wise to choose us. We're on the upswing and should be playing finals the next few years, gearing up for a tilt. So presume he does have senior coaching ambitions he can say he was part of North's rise over 15/16/17 etc.

Also, being at a smaller club allows him to say that he understand the need for resources, how best to use them etc.

Going to Richmond or Melbourne is pure career suicide. Stick to the media instead.

I see where Devo coming is from in that Watsons role as forward coach has seen us drop from 3rd to 8th offensively and our accuracy dropped from 2nd to 17th as well.
This is attributed to our gameplan being more defensive apparently. That is the conesensus on here.

Also, looking at Lingy, it is pretty obvious that without footy, he wouldn't have so many attractive Head Jobs in his future.

does Milky do any sort of development roles at the club or is he just helping out at training? Saw him pop up twice in Brad Scott's press conference.

He's just a stalker, still aggrieved with Brad over his decision to trade/delist him.

I was wondering the exact same thing. Is it a regular occurrence for players from the VFL-affiliated sides to train with North or what?
