Much has been said as of late about Cameron Ling. Some has been warranted, yet some of the things said by some people have been questionable.

For four years (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), Ling has been brilliant for the Geelong Football Club. During our years in the lower section of the ladder, he has been far and away our most consistent performer with Matthew Scarlett. He has a Carji Greeves Medal to his name and a runner-up finish to go with that.

So now we have come to a point where Geelong are expected to challenge for the premiership, but have fallen in a heap somewhat. Obviously, because of our high expectations, the finger is going to be pointed at many people as to where the blame lies. The coach, the skipper, the fitness crew, the leadership group, the list goes on and on...

Numerous people have decided to vent their spleen at Cameron Ling. I must say I am actually quite suprised, not just because Ling is one of my more favourable players. He hasn't been quite as bad as some think.

Sure, his disposal at times hasn't been great, but really is he alone? Why direct the rage at Ling solely? I would have lost count this year how many times guys like Hunt, Enright, Wojcinski when given the chance, have constantly given the ball up. Joel Corey is up there with our best players, but I would be typing for the next week if I was to tell you how many times he has turned the ball over in his career. In fact, he still does it now, so why does he escape much of the critcism Ling gets? Because he got 36 disposals against the Eagles. Ling has got a stack of the ball as of late, yet he still isn't doing enough by the lofty standards for some people here.

I here the argument that the game has passed Ling by, even at this stage of his career. Yes, he has never been a quick player. What he has lacked in pace he has more than adequately made up for in aerobic capacity. The calls by some Geelong supporters that he isn't fit is absolutely ludicrous. Ling is by far the fittest player on Geelong's list. Every single year he kills the fitness component of pre-season.

Not only is he all this, but he is one of the toughest players at Geelong.

I, for one, would rather a team of tough Cameron Ling's than a team of quick, outside players that some people seem to be begging for.

Sorry Chapmagic, I don't agree with you. I don't think the game has passed Ling by at all. Just at the moment apart from the odd good possession, Ling is a liabillity when he gets the ball, he looks slow, unfit, and panicky. I've always liked the way Ling goes about it, he has looked like a superstar in some games, especially the two finals in 04. But currently he is playing as a shadow of his former self and needs a break in the magoos. Enright has been a far better player in the past than Ling, I also rate Woja as our most underrated player, and lets not forget he's back from 12 months out of the game! The difference is that Ling hasn't had any injuries (apart from a minor knee in the Nab cup) so there is no apparent reason for his form slump. Either his injury is still affecting him or he is just out of form, either way he needs to take a break and rack up some quality possessions in the magoos to get his composure and confidence back!

This is one of the biggest problems down at Geelong. The bush football attitude, "He is a loyal member of the club - we must repay his faith...etc" doesn't cut it in a professional sporting environment. Who cares how good the player has been in the past? What matters is that player X (Cameron Ling) is not up to AFL standards at the present moment in time.

i guess if you were a coach you would be looking for a new gig then.

thompson really needs to find another position for him, as i have said before, he is not a midfielder. he is a liabiility there at the moment.

he musnt be a leader, i couldnt see him marshalling the troops on saturday and if he was no one was listening to him.

and what he did in the past isnt going to help us in the future.

Mate give up...there are a bunch of new tools on this thread and a bunch of old hot heads who think that the club are losing on purpose and the only way to win is to fire half the list, sack the coach and get in a new president.

el Revolution!

Hmm...interesting point. I was basically referring to you would rather hard ball-winners over mere athletes who play 'outside' football.

The game has chnaged, no doubt about that. But the basics are still paramount.

he/she also started a double "judd out" thread, not dealt with a full deck of cards.

The first Judd thread was just after his did his hamstring...

The second Judd thread was to say he was out...

of course you would like a mix of hard nuts and athletes to complement each other. but the west coast athletes also ran over us through clearing it out of the centre.

im not saying delist or trade ling, im just saying he doesnt get a hard ball and he doesnt hurt the opposition when he does get the outside football. impartial people have made these observations as well.

its time to try him in the forward line.

Well Good luck in the local Geelong League!!

Have a look at the top four sides, they all play fast running games!
Please name a key slow midfielder for any of these teams?

My post said "quick, outside players".

Someone has got to get the pill first...
