Cameron Mooney - perspective

His primary source of income is as a media spruiker. He does whatever it takes to get ratings and coverage. Think we could reasonably say he's doing that. Far rather him than that shouting fool Maher.
But he is a good commentator/media personality. He has plenty of interesting things to say and points to make without reverting to self pity over 2008. He is better than that.

If you listened to his brekky stint you'd know his so-called "self pity" forms an infintesimal part of the 3 hours. Throw in the segment in which it happened he was a reluctant participant - even then the "self pity" was a minor part of it. A colossal beat-up which some here have swallowed without a tooth mark.

that's because Mooney smashed the living shit out of anyone who dared drift in front of his leading path. Same issue with Barry Hall as not many chose to do it. And when those guys hit, they tried to kill a player and not just give them bruised ribs for a month.

Hawkins is a teddy bear. He actually makes Billy Brownless look a little intimidating by comparison.

I agree. Much as I want him to split packs wide open and kill anyone who tries to block his lead out from the goalsquare I think I now accept that these things won't happen. It's just not in his nature to be that sort of player.

Having said that, I saw him lose his rag sometimes this past year. Push ANY man too far and...

Unpopular opinion forthcoming.
Cameron Mooney gets a bad rap - perhaps not this board but certainly the main board.

General consensus is that Mooney was an average player who prospered greatly from a stellar midfield.

I remember being asked midway through 07 who we could ill afford to lose to injury. I nominated Mooney to some derision. While there were better midfield players, reality was Mooney straightened the team up and provided a target that until then wasnt obvious. Played a selfless role. Was absolutely pivotal in teams success 2007 and 09.

Tell ya one thing, he's a champion bloke ... meet him briefly, was very funny and genuine good fella
... had real grunt on field too .. great to watch him go at it

But the game doesn't allow it any more. At all. Tell me of any key forward who does do that? There aren't any. Because the moment a key forward does iron out a defender dropping into his space, an army of apologists are outraged.

Do you think most supporters of other teams, and even Geelong, really think about or recall that he was AA in 07?
Most I've seen comment on how that was a joke selection similar to Mackie in 2013. I guess the thought of either of them being an AA player disgusts some.

Would be better if he spoke about 2009. :D

Played well in 2009 , however I wonder what his legacy would be like had he held the Ablett kick to the goalsquare which led to Chappys goal
What if Moondog had held that mark and kicked the winning goal?
That would atone for plenty I would have thought

Can you still be physical and have a physical presence leading out without being pinged though? I know you can't just cannon into the back of someone else unless you're going for the mark but surely if you have eyes only for the ball there might be a wee bit of leeway somewhere?

Of course it all depends on the umpire of the day too, doesn't it?

Correct. The QF against the saints in '08 makes the cut. There's also round 1 1999 and against the dogs 2002 or 2004, but yes, 08 gf gets a miss. As does the 1999 grand final.
But 2007 gf features. First goal first quarter and after half time

The way he told the story on SEN about him being traded to Geelong was kinda funny. You had to be there, but..... :p

It's not word for word, but it's definitely the gist. They used a 3-stage attack to convince him. :D Yooz guys may have heard a different story.

Even though he didn't get a touch in North's 1999 Flag, he was rapped to be part of it, and celebrated long and hard.
A few weeks after the GF, he was asked to a meeting with the football manager (or similar); I can't remember who it was.

-----------------------------------------------

'I'd just turned 20 and was having the best time of my life by a mile. I was just a kid from the country, and there was partying for a month with superstars like Wayne Carey and other North legends. Even though I played a shocker in the Grand Final, I still felt like a big part of it, and couldn't be happier. I was on top of the world.

I was asked to a meeting with the North football manager in his office. He said, "you've probably heard that Leigh Colbert is leaving Geelong. Well, we think we're a good chance of getting him. We think you're very talented, and we love having you here, but we've know that The Cats are interested in you, and there's a possibility that you could be part of a trade for Colbert. However, as I said, we love you here, so it's up to you."

I replied, "ah, nah, thanks, but I absolutely love it here. I feel like a big part of the club. All my mates are here and I'm having the best time of my life." He said, "ah, ok. Of course."

Suddenly, Dennis Pagan appeared out of nowhere, and said something very similar: "we think we can get Leight Colbert if the trade is right. We know that Geelong are interested in you, but, it's mostly up to you. How do you feel about it? As we said, it's mostly up to you"

I replied similarly to Dennis: "thanks, but no thanks. As I said, I really, really love it here. I'm with all my mates, and I'm having the best time of my life." Dennis, "oh, ok."

Suddenly, Bomber Thompson appeared from NOWHERE, just as Dennis had. Mark was an assistant coach at North at the time, and was to be the new Geelong coach the following year. This is when I twigged and thought, "Uh oh! It's not my decision at all. It looks like they've already made up their minds that I'm gunna be traded."

Bomber said: "Cam, I think you've got a lot of talent, and I reckon you could be a big part of Geelong's future", etc, etc. As he continued to put forward his point, I was suddenly flat, and just nodded, knowing that my fate was determined.

So, I went to Geelong, North got Colby, and I preceded to waste the next few years partying.'

To think he went from party boy reluctantly traded to heart of the club. Wouldn't have wanted it any other way [emoji173]
