Was Cookie out of contract at the end of this year? If not, it's a good way around paying him what he's owed from his last year of his contract without it going towards the Salary Cap.

Was just about my favourite Freo player, so it's good to see him stay around the club. If he can offload his work-rate, determination, tenacity, etc onto some of his more naturally gifted former team-mates that'd be very valuable IMO.

yeah cookie was out of contract. and he was almost everyone at freo's favourite player, even if, towards the end he was surpassed by younger players, we all still loved to see him get the odd game and do what he did best. he will be important behind the scenes in the coming years im sure

If a player is contracted, but doesn't play the final year, then his contracted payment is still calculated in the salary cap, whether it is paid or not. If Longmuir retired, we still have to allow that amount in the cap, regardless of whether he undertakes ruck coach duties for us. The only advantage to a player retiring while contracted is that the spot on the list is available for another player, though with Longmuir he could remailn on the longterm injury list and allow us to promote a Rookie.

Anyway, Cook isn't contracted for next year.

I thought he could have his contract torn up and not counted at all, just like what happened with Mal Michael last year.

I know this is a while into the future, but I reckon Cookie is a future head coach. He's a smart guy, but as we all know he also wears his heart on his sleave. He also has always struggled with technical difficulties of kicking and things and for that reason I reckon he would be the perfect one to perfect drills and spend extra time on little details that make a team go well.
