Campbell gone for the season

Richmond’s already slim hopes for a finals berth have been dealt a further blow, with a season-ending injury to captain Wayne Campbell and a hamstring injury to key midfielder Kane Johnson.
Already without the services of vice-captain Darren Gaspar - who underwent a knee reconstruction last month – the Tigers must now confront the remainder of the season without their two senior leaders, after Campbell ruptured his left achilles tendon early in the last quarter of Saturday’s four-point loss to Geelong.
The injury compounds what has been a frustrating season for the Richmond skipper, who had already missed six matches this year because of a nagging calf problem.
A dejected Richmond coach Danny Frawley admitted after the match that Campbell had been left out of the heat of the midfield for as long as possible, due to his recent lack of matches.
Campbell played most of the first half in a sweeping role across half-back but was moved into the engine room in the second half as the Tigers attempted to snatch an unlikely victory.
“You’ve got to remember where Wayne’s preparation has come from and probably the reason why he’s going to miss the remainder of year,” Frawley explained.
“Maybe he would have done it in the second quarter if I had have put him in the midfield, who knows?
“Now the disappointing part is we’ve lost Campbell and Johnson for a few weeks so we’ve just got to make sure that players get opportunities. That’s the only way you can look at it.”
Johnson, who was a major force behind the Tigers’ seven-goal last quarter, with nine possessions, is expected to miss the next two to three matches after limping from the field late in the piece with a hamstring strain.
Campbell will undergo surgery on Monday afternoon to repair his damaged achilles.
“All indicators would suggest he’s no chance of playing again this year,” Frawley said.
“He’s out for the season."
“When you look down at your bench when the game was in the mix, you’ve got Campbell, Leon (Cameron) who was really the only reason we were still in the game (after kicking four goals) and then you’ve got Kane Johnson limping off, you need experience in that situation.
“It would have been great to have them all out there in the last five or six minutes but it wasn’t to be. But in saying that, we would have stolen the game. Geelong, when the game was up for grabs nice and early, was the better team.”
A bitterly disappointed Frawley could only hope that the injuries to his stars will see some of his less-established players make the most of their forthcoming chances at senior level.
“Boys are going to get an opportunity now because our skipper’s gone down for the year (and) our vice-captain’s out for the year. There’s going to be a new captain and vice-captain for the next seven games and that’s going to be pleasing. That will hopefully filter through right to our 33rd player now.”
