Can AFL 2007 work on backwards-compatible PS3's?

Of the PS3 systems that are out Worldwide only the 20GB and 40GB models aren't Backwards Compatible, Australia first had the 60GB, now we only get the 40GB, I have the 60GB and have played AFL 2007 numerous times without problem, it does freeze up occasionally for the odd second or two, but normally I can play for a good time before that will happen.

Thanks. Spewing we can only get the 40gb now. And why in a million years would you take away at least the option to pay a bit extra for compatibility. I did hear though they were fixing this for all version...must have heard wrong.

I can't buy it without PS2 compatibility. Thanks Sony!

Honestly I'm not sure why anybody would want to play PS2 games on a PS3.... but you can get an emulator on the online store anyway I think.

I'm not sure the emulator comment is correct. PS1 is software, PS2 is hardware. Sony stopped making the 60gb PS3s that had backwards compatability when they started rolling out more games. PS1 is still backwards compatible, because it's only software, but PS2 is not.

Having said that, I have a PS3 that is backwards compatible. And AFL 2007 is most definately playable on it. I have it & love it. I have quite a few PS2 games that I bought when I got my PS3 - they are still good. I had a 360 and not a PS2, so this was an affordable way for me to enjoy my PS3!

You can always order overseas, no region protection helps this, play asia would be the best, cheapest and most reliable if you were to do this.

Thanks. always nervous about ordering expensive electronincs from O/S but probably the best option. ____ Sony and their PS2 hating ways!

Just thought I would throw that in.

A) Ebay is also a viable option. It's where I got mine. And you can be safe by only buying from power sellers.

B) Sony don't hate PS2, it's been superseeded by a newer system. Can't get angry at them for moving ahead with the times!

Can and should get angry at them for removing backwards compatibility for no reason other than to force you to buy PS3 games.

It's a smart business decision. And if Xbox had the market to do so, I bet my bottom dollar they'd've done it too.

PS3 was designed to play PS3 games, much the same as PS2 was designed to play PS2 games and Xbox360 was designed to play Xbox360 games. They didn't have to offer backwards compatability, but initially they did whilst they didn't have the kind of games out there to lure others in. Now they do, it's not required.

WTF? If Xbox had the market to do so? There are 100s of 360 compatible xbox games, and millions more 360s sold than PS3s. What market are you talking about?

Um, 360 still does backwards compatibility. And it's a ____ing essential as far as I am concerned. You seriously laud a move purely designed to screw consumers, as a good business decision?

Sony fanboys

backwards compatibility is not essential LLD......you're just using it as a tool for a reason why you think xbox 360 is superior. although in your defense it's a nice little touch for a system to have and ps3 probably should've kept it simply to keep those happy who wanted to get rid of the ps2. (and to quieten up the fanboys a bit)

i mean who the hell has.... as an example 10 xbox games but no original xbox???

i bought my ps3 to play ps3 games..... simply put.

i still have my ps2 to play my ps2 games.

others may not agree with what i just said but an awful lot will.

I think the main fault in LLD's arguement is that outside Australia, you can get a Backwards Compatible PS3, sure Backwards Compatibility is good to have, but if you are smart and before you buy, you would know that it doesn't have BC and therefore would just buy the next-gen games, as after all it is a next-gen system.

But as with every console, the lesser you pay, the lesser features you will get, for example with the most basic XBOX 360 SKU you don't get a HDD as standard, now one would say that a HDD is more valuable than Backwards Compatibility, as without a HDD you cannot play several games and there is no capability for Online gaming, however with the most basic PS3 SKU you still get to play every PS3/PS1 game, you get to play online, you also get the 20GB(40GB In Aus) Hard Drive and Blu-Ray Disc player.

Sure, let's ignore the plenty of people on this tiny subforum of this small board alone who have expressed interest in that feature. Surely plenty of you PS3 owners are coming off the PS2. You really want to have to keep your old PS2 around just so you can play the games you have bought for it? There is no reason whatsoever to remove it, no cost benefit to Sony at all. But I'm the one who's just bringing it up to score a point? Why are you defending it?

The original xbox is a little different, as it was pretty easily converted into a pretty decent entertainment centre, with a chip and hard drive. It's still useful if you want to keep it, the PS2 however....

Riiight, so if you are smart you will buy the right PS3? If you are smart, and wanted to play online (plenty don't) you wouldn't buy the right 360? There is no flaw in my argument.

There aren't any games you can't play without a HDD by the by, no need for huge installs to try to bring performance up to scratch on the 360 ;)

It's hardly "essential"! I have never even thought about playing PS2 games on my PS3... if I wanted to do that I would get my PS2 out....

Personal preferences aside, this thread is becoming a 360 v PS3 thread. The question was "Can AFL 2007 work on backwards-compatible PS3's?" - Answer is yes. Case & thread closed really.

It's actually a backwards compatibility thread. I believe you were the one who brought up the 360.

I'm just saying that when money comes into it certain things have to be taken out of a system, I don't know why there aren't more PS3 SKU's in Australia but the fact remains that 75% of PS3 SKU's are BC, the less you pay, the less features you get, BC is alot less needed than a HDD.

But the fact remains that there are games for the 360 that you simply cannot play on the system without a HDD, I would have thought that not playing an old-gen game on a current/next-gen system is alot better than not playing a current/next-gen game on a current/next-gen system.

Ah, too taken by the better explosions and water effects to bother playing a last generation game?
You do realise that the games are about 10 times bigger now as well, you only need to look at games from the PS2 or XBOX and look at games now to see how big the difference is, not to mention it will keep getting even bigger.

Sure you can still get some great game experiences from the older games, but why wouldn't you have been playing them then?
