The Democrats were the conservative party of the time. The Republicans were the progressive party.
The Republicans conservative/Democrats progressive is a 20th century phenomenon.
This is why history should be taught in schools, folks.

It's always amusing that the conservative party call themselves 'the party of Lincoln', as a tacit admission that their greatest days were when they were progressive.
Conservatives are rarely - if ever - on the right side of history.
Apart from communism, of course, which killed a lazy 100 million.
If you don't count about 30 other screws up, progressives have a ripping record.
Taking short cuts in your thinking, or attempting next level mental gymnastics
will lead you to label conservatives as absolutely resistant to change of any kind or for any reason.Unfortunately, there are some things you can't learn in a textbook.

Unfortunately, there are some things you can't learn in a textbook.
What social causes in recent history have conservatives championed vs progressives?
- Emancipation?
- Universal healthcare?
- Recognition of indigenous Australian?
- 8 hour work day?
- Right to education?
- Equal pay for equal work?
- No fault divorce?
- Access to higher education?
Progressives should have stuck to that path. You would have got a pat on the back from everyone.
Come back to me in 20 years when grand social causes such as unisex toilets and transgender kids have had time to kick in.
We'll re-do the scorecard then.

It's ok that you're distracted by small side issues but not everyone is.
The rise of the precariat, environmental concerns, TNC power to circumvent democratically elected government policy via a myriad of ISDS provisions - there are a lot of issues that actually matter that progressive will continue to work for, while some conservatives actively work against.
On the contrary. I encourage all progressives to keep working.
You guys can take the glory and the accolades, and we'll take care of the mundane stuff like paying the bills and keeping the lights on.
