gotta let that go, was years ago, he has taken a few steps up in maturity and leadership since then
thats fine but he wouldn't make a better captain then Cotch.

Let's not get carried away here flea , afterall I am only trying to add a little humour after you brought up Cotchin making the slightest of errors in press conference , I am more than happy to forgive him .
He was lost for words , he wasn't trying to pull a gag and he wasn't able to roll through it .

no true mate but wasnt it you that thought lids wasnt leader worthy bc he forgot who we are playing the next week? imho i think to base that assessment on that is just silly. if i got that wrong im sorry.

A person not being outstanding / faultless in a major aspect of a role is not ideal , it becomes even more glaring as the odds of it happening increase .

Couldn't be too dumb Cotchin kept 9 felt it was his number ! Good work cotch! Make the number 9 yours forget the 17 ridiculous gimmick

So no one else had nine and it will just be his number hey? This idea that no one can make 17 their own number is baffling, considering everyone seems to think a player can make every other number under 40 "their own". Rioli seemed to do okay under it.

Still rckon this is typical gen y thinking. Fans more concerned about changing the number on the back of their own jumper, and having no clue of the clubs history beyond Richo.

Maybe Cotch told the club that if he couldn't keep the number 9 he wouldn't sign a long term deal.
Shows how much we love the guy though, breaking tradition to keep him happy.

I seriously doubt that Cotchin would threaten the club over a number. If he did, I wouldn't want a bloke like him to be captain.

Was a bit of a tounge in cheek comment, would certainly not want him as captain if that was the case.
I'm extremely happy with the way it's turned out though.
The number 9 just looks right on his back.

No , Lids errors in the media where more glaring, based on the frequency of them in comparison to the total media comments he made.

Two versus one? You really have it in for him on those gaffs don't you? I have to agree with the others though, seems we are much more forgiving with Cotchin than we are with Lids

On the black caviar thing, how would a non punter know she is a she? Tbh I had no idea about this until Deledio said it, and the twitter verse reacted.

Not sure what your saying there but on the history thing ..Im only guessing of all our Premiership Captains only one wore number 17. So thats a kick in the face for quite a few champions if this thing ever got going.
My personal history ends at Royce Hart and I always thought that was our most famous number..
See how problematic this all is.
Historically our Captains wear their own numbers.

No problems about Lids not knowing the sex of a race horse , but it does pose the question of whether someone who is comfortable in the media would attempt a joke on something they know little to nothing about ?
Don't have it in for Lids , just that I haven't seen alot of him in the media , especially in recent times, and when I have he has made a couple of errors which have made me think he isn't that comfortable .

Its the nature of the shows though (TFS and BTG), everything has to be a gag. For some like Jack, it comes naturally, for others not so. To be fair to Lids, most of Cotch's interviews are very straight (he even didn't go hard on the gag when Jack outed Rompingwins as the attempted dog murderer).

Congrats to Lids on being selected for VC on the verge of his peak years. He wasn't a leader when he arrived but he's developed some sound leadership qualities under the club's player development. He is probably better than Trent is some specific areas of leadership, but I guess Trent is the more well-rounded leader. They'll both keep getting better and it'll be a team effort to set the standards at the club. I see them both as players with very high standards for themselves and others.

The final decision was also about how the club is perceived and Cotchin has somehow been more successful than Brett in creating a perception of being tough/contested, hard-working, and reaching his potential.

I emphasised perception because we know Brett's a great contested player and his defensive game has gone up a notch, but he's perceived by the wider football world as a little under-performing relative to the talent he shows... some people also perceive him as mentally soft, which I don't agree with, it could just be his style or something, but that's how he's generally perceived compared to Cotchin. However, in the future he can change this and could be viewed as one of the most complete players of the modern game.

Perhaps Lids will be like Richo later in his career when the public finally accept him and love him after years of underrating him? His honesty at the media conference was likeable. Has shown loyalty and honesty in all his interviews, I think it's a possibility if he continues as a goal-kicking midfielder and wins us a final or two.

Cotch looks to be a champion in the making already. Could be a captain in the Voss/Buckley/Hird level of admiration. Exciting times ahead.

WAS an obviously tough call on who to make captain - Cotchin or Deledio.
Rather than make a case for any individual I'm just glad we were in such a fortunate position to have two quality candidates to choose from.
That's the good part.
In years past, Newman, Knights, Campbell etc. were all certainties to do the job as we didn't have options at the time.

my point exactly.

imo lids is more of a natural talker(on camera) than cotch if you hear their inflection yet i reckon others are better anyway. listen to newy, he never seems to stutter to get something out and rolls onto topics without hesitation. at the end of the day our captain is their to lead behind closed doors and on the field moreso than in front of a camera and im sure the club dont really hold the camera shyness to heart. its not like they're mutes like a dusty or anything. just my view of things and its not that important but i just think your being too harsh.

IIRC Newy had a tendancy to rub the back of his head when he got a bit uncomfortable about something, especially in the early days. But as you say, the important stuff can be behind the closed doors. One who spoke well (because you don't see him speaking much in the media) is Batchelor. He just had that calm calculating approach. Of course that doesn't necessarily make him the best leader.

After watching the presser last week, I let it marinade over the weekend and have to say, even though I was one of the people wanting Cotch to move to 17, I couldn't be more impressed about how he handled it. He knew the delicate situation and that there were both parties for and against keeping his number or moving to the 17 and acknowledged some people might not be happy but that he hoped they would understand his own reasons.

His first challenge as captain of the club and he handled it with aplomb. Way to go Captain Cotch :thumbsu:
