Captains do a lot for this league and generally speaking, are the right people for the job. Strong active captains that are capable of maintaining strong active clubs are what keeps this league running. Recruitment, particularly from outside the forum, is a cornerstone of the league. The development in this area from season to season has been terrific.
They all volunteer their own time, but holding the top job opens them up to scrutiny. Ahead of S17, it's time to preview the S17 captains (or at least who I think are the captains).
Pressure rating 1-10 (1 being minimal pressure, 10 being plenty).
No Risk
1 - Wise Guy Sam (Gold City Royals) - No pressure for S17 on WGS. This is a season of making his mark. Has assembled a strong mix of youth and experience for S17 and has the overwhelming support of popularity on his side.
1 - StFly (Geelong Gumbies) - Premiership captain. Credit to StFly for being a major factor in turning the Gumbies from borderline joke to genuine contender. Has a large presence and is under no pressure.
1 - Eth (Demons) - The club is no longer a joke. They have moved on from the days of instability and if Eth wants to continue, his club will back him all the way. Not even Cooney could challenge.
2- MannumPower (Swamprats) - Has been terrific as a captain so far. Made the big call to recruit SD and The Jet, which could be the move of the century or could make the club a target. I don't think the Rats will mind, either way. Safe as houses.
2 - PVF (Wonders) - Great poster, groomed for the top job. Inherits a very strong list. Recruitment of Pantskyle and subsequent naming of Pants as a VC could be detrimental to the Wonders "quality" culture, but PVF won't be under any pressure.
Should Be Right
4 - Broken (Roys FC) - Most would have him higher. But there's not much pressure on Broken as far as I am concerned. Roys will do as they always do, build a solid enough list to be competitive. You don't have to be ultra active to be competitive, and the Roys seem to attract certain posters. Ruours of the Roys demised are exaggerated, Broken is the best man for it at the moment.
4 - IMS (Hawks) - Great captain and great activity and presence. Pressure comes in the form of the team. The Hawks will be desperately hoping that some of their emerging talent turn into big name posters this season. Perhaps, there is too much left to too few at the Hawks at the moment. But the captain recruits, has a good presence and knows that if the club was ever struggling, there are strings he can pull. Pressure on the youth to perform, but the captain will be fine.
5 - Gee Dub (Baghdad Bombers) - Inherited the captaincy at a tumultuous time and has handled issues reasonably well so far. Has lost a few players, but has kept the Bombers' head above water. Could step up the activity and recruitment, but is doing enough. Make or break season for the Bombers.
Time to Go?
7 - Filthy Sanchez (Fighting Furies) - "I know for fact that I won't be the Furies captain that drops the Richmond link..." Controversial move by Filthy in allowing Claypigeon into the club as a non Tigers supporter. I love the move, actually. But in an earlier interview I conducted with Filthy, he was steadfast in the fact that he wouldn't stand for it. The Furies dropped off a little last season. Filthy himself has certainly had a drop in activity and seemingly, interest. The Furies' captaincy has been a revolving door lately. Perfect candidate in the wings waiting.
9 - Peterss (Geelong Gumbies) - The premiership is the only thing saving him from a 10. I keep hearing about how good he is behind the scenes, and that's all good and well. I have no issues with co-captaincy, I just think there are better candidates to share the top job with StFly if he doesn't want to go it alone. Captains need to have a notable presence. One Gumbies captain does, one certainly does not.
10 - LJP86 (Southern Dragons) - The time has come for LJP to call it a day. The Dragons have always been a middle of the road club under LJP's reign and he always contributes well to the league. His activity drop-off in recent seasons is entirely understandable, but he has had multiple opportunities to pass the captaincy on to other candidates at the Dragons who could eagerly improve the standing of the club. He can still contribute without the captaincy. He needs to move on and drop the title.
