Never really understood the hate for maxwell , if he played for your team he would have been a favourite

Organized collingwoods back half into an unstoppable unit during 2010-11 with blokes like Heath Shaw and Lumumba around him

On field, he went when it was his turn, and encouraged others to do the same. He was in charge of a Collingwood outfit that was much better drilled/disciplined than it is now.

How is that different to grimes then? One thing you can nock grimes over is his attack on the ball.

It's a good question. I'd have thought Maxwell was a bit more vocal on-field but of course I don't really know that as I'm in the stands.

Anyway, Grimes decision to step down is one I commend him for making if he thinks he isn't up to the task. Actually displays good maturity/leadership. Who knows, he might have the role again in 3 or 4 years time.

Also, another thought just occured: an 'unglamourous' captain like Maxwell might work better when the team as a whole is a better, more cohesive unit (read: playing finals). The captain in this case can focus less on his own performance and worry more about leading the team, setting up players/structures etc. (This is how I always viewed Maxwell).

In situations like ours maybe it makes more sense to have an undisputed excellent player as captain. The rest of the team benefits from seeing him get 30 touches, kicking goals, whatever. Just speculation though, there's a million variables in any captaincy scenario. But yeah.

Just better for PR to have a captain who is also consistently an excellent performer.

We don't get much media exposure, may as well concentrate it on our legit star(s?)

I guess in my mind there is 2 types of captain

The extension of the coach or the guy who plays well every time

People might not like to admit it but there's an element of truth to this.

Yeah, pretty much. When you're lucky the two align.

Also was it Paul Roos or Grant Thomas who went with a different captain every year ?

Nat jones is a good captain but he is the figurehead for Lynden Dunn
Thomas, but Roos had co-captains post Kelly for a while.

Collingwood didn't go from rabble to Premiers under Maxwell. Buckley, Clement and Burns were the ones that dragged them up there before Maxwell kept them organised.

Collingwood had great onfield leaders for a decade , but maxwell and tarrant were the only senior heads in a young backline that had brown , reid, shaw, lumumba all under 25

There's no doubt the collingwood boys fell into line behind maxwell and it's no surprise that our blokes couldn't fall into line behind 2 kids struggling with there own form
