Hello all,

As we all know, captaincy choice is a weekly headache which can have a huge impact to overall ranking.

I was wondering where I was at re: making the tough decision. Below are my captaincy choices from throughout the year. In brackets I also have highest scorer for the round.

Round 1: B Goddard 119 (D Cox 165)
Round 2: B Goddard 102 (S Pendlebury 162)
Round 3: B Goddard 112 (L Franklin 147)
Round 4: D Cox 87 (M Pavlich 158)
Round 5: S Pendlebury 130 (S Pendlebury 130)
Round 6: D Cox 131 (C Judd 154)
Round 7: D Mundy 123 (A Sandilands 162)
Round 8: D Mundy 119 (J Selwood 153)
Round 9: D Mundy 91 (D Cox 149)
Round 10: J Selwood 136 (C Judd 155)
Round 11: J Selwood 103 (D Cox 166)
Round 12: C Judd 111 (M Boyd 164)
Round 13: D Cox 105 (G Ablett 144)
Round 14: G Ablett 121 (M Pavlich 155)
Round 15: G Ablett 185 (G Ablett 185)
Round 16: G Ablett 19 (S Pendlebury 160)
Round 17: G Ablett 127 (D Petrie 157)
Round 18: D Cox 149 (C Judd 197)
Round 19: C Judd 88 (D Cox 213)
Round 20: D Cox 78 (C Judd 163)

Total: 2236
Potential: 3239

So as we can see, I've got the decision correct twice out of twenty attempts. My captains have scored a collective 2236 points. Should have I chosen correctly every week (very, very close to impossible), I would have an extra 1003 points.

Anyway, this is purely an observation of hindsight because I thought it would be interesting to see if the highly ranked teams correlate with the good captain-pickers.

Cheers.

Wow when you look at it like that that's a whole lot of points difference.

How did you manage to get those historical scores up?

Also might want to edit round 5 as you've got Pendles twice.

You can find how your team scored in any round via the drop down menu on the right side of the page under the "Team" tab.

EDIT: I am currently 477th. I would be 12th if not for the bad captaincy decisions, haha. Cue "if Brendan van Schaik scored 429294 I would be 1st!" calls.

that might just mean pendles was the top scorer for the round

or that Pendles was the highest scorer in his team for the week. ;)

Not sure why, but i found Rds 18, 19 and 20 a little funny. :p I wonder on how many of those weeks the top scorer on your team was the VC?

I've had a few bad weeks but overall I can't complain. Obviously I'd be ranked higher with some better/luckier choices but everyone is in the same boat. Also it's good to catch yourself out on patterns that don't work.

It's funny though, you look at it and see that I'm down -788, but realistically I wouldn't have picked a lot of the guys who top scored. In my mind I'm really only down about 200-300 points because of the captains I was tossing up between and went the wrong way. I'm fairly happy with how I've picked.

Think i am bored enough to do this.

Looking back I've made some terrible decisions. Surprised to have only picked Pendles captain for the first time in RD 18 despite having him since round 1.

Points lost - 939

This is an important point. I think it is unrealistic to expect that you're going to pick the highest-scoring player as your Capt every week, or even every second-week. Therefore, some of these numbers/differentials being quoted are inflated.

A more valid analysis would be the points difference between your starting captain each week and a lock-and-load perma-captain such as Pendlebury, Judd or Cox.

Personally, I don't have a lot of sympathy for coaches who try and get too cute with their captain choices and then get burnt, if they have a bloke like Pendles who just carves out 125+ each week seemingly in his sleep!

Every single bloody time.

True, but it's just so hard to put C on the same guy each week. The big captain roulette wheel is much more fun.

Had a great start with Captains but then let myself down. Lost out on a possible 960 odd.

After having it look through, choosing the wrong rookie each week (especially early) has cost me more than the wrong captain.

I've lost a lot more through bad luck also, like many others. Losing Mundy for 6 then trading Mundy to Bartel for 4 two weeks in a row really cost a few of us. Then Ablett 19 and captain hurt even more.

5 times top scorer as C, 4 times VC as top scorer... Not too bad.

Interesting thread, here are the captains i used and the highest scorer in my team for that round in brackets with the points differential after that

Round 1: Swan (Swan)
Round 2: Swan (Swan)
Round 3: Swan (Franklin) -39
Round 4: Swan (Fyfe) -1
Round 5: Swan (Petrie) -43
Round 6: Swan (Cox) -27
Round 7: Fyfe (Sandilands) -91
Round 8: Swan (S.Johnson) -38
Round 9: Swan (Cox) -69
Round 10: Pendlebury (S.Johnson) -24
Round 11: Ablett (Cox) -12
Round 12: Ablett (Goddard) -4
Round 13: Cox (Ablett) -39
Round 14: Ablett (Pavlich) -34
Round 15: Ablett (Ablett)
Round 16: Ablett (Dal Santo) -155
Round 17: Ablett (Petrie) -30
Round 18: Swan (Goodes) -52
Round 19: Pendlebury (Cox) -53
Round 20: Swan (S.Johnson) -19

Only 3 "correct" captains choices so far but only a couple that were terrible. Fyfe vs Sandi as VC in round 7 hurt but not as much as Ablett's injury but that wouldn't have hurt as much if i had anyone but Dal Santo VC...still pretty happy with choices for the season.

It doesn't really pay to think about it but it's 730 potential points lost, would be sitting 252 points clear in 1st instead of 478 points back in 16th if i'd miraculously hit all the captains. Mind you i'm sure prompts and many others would have a lot of points "lost" as well.

I liken the captaincy to picking tattslotto numbers. If you pick the same one every week you're eventually gonna win the jackpot!

hi. interesting topic.

just minor correction

Round 8:
D Mundy 119 (J Selwood 153)

I think this should be

Round 8: D Mundy 119 (GAJ 198)

so the best score should be about 35 points more

A lot of people didn't pick Ablett up until Round 10.Thus they couldn't have him captain.

These are my results

My Choices: 2271
Best Choices (given team): 3171
Perma Captaincy (Cox, don't have pendlebury :( ): 2274

So I've lost 3 points from not leaving perma captain on Cox! :thumbsu:

Points lost: 3171 - 2271 = 900.

Technically, while Cox has scored 2274, he's also had two bye- so add on the 200-300 missed from those!

Does anyone know how I can work out my new rank with a new score of 45,094?

Not sure how you guys are getting it.

Cheers
