It appears when you look at the players we drafted between about 1999 and 2003 that many of them are gone. The teams that are successful now seem to have their got their core players from around that time. How many players do we have that were around in 2000-2001? Not many. Am I on the right track that this is one reason we haven't won a lot since then? The young kids we have are going to take time to develop.

Yes but we see teams like Power, Bulldogs, Tigers, Bombers etc who clearly display progress. Our young kids are not so young anymore. Yes physically most seem better this year but skill and decision making need to improve. Fundamentals need to be reinforced and discipline must be shown.
We are on our way but teams like the Dockers have been potentially great for a long time and never cut it. I do not want that to happen with this list that could do so much!

1999, 2000 & 2001 do not rank as our most inspired years of drafting.

In 1999 we brought Mansfield and O'Reilly in for relatively high draft picks.

In 2000 we took Livingston, Sporn and Wiggins all in the first round...nuff said.

2001 we gave away high picks and Porter for McKernan.

You might remember in 2002 we weren't able to participate for...well let's just say we werent able to participate. This effectively cost us Goddard & Wells (had we chosen them with 1 & 2).

2003 we picked up Walker...and when you look at the top ten that year the decision has been justified. So really, Walker is the first genuinely talented high pick draftee to the club for some time.

Pagan made the decision early on to recruit ready made 'battlers' rather than re-build from the ground up. No point arguing this now, but along with the draft restrictions, this has easily put us back 6-8 years in terms of list development.

Those years were forgettable, and when you throw in Kris Massie and Murray Vance from a couple of years prior, you can see that our recruiting was pretty poor for quite a few years there.

we did pick some winners (for some players I use the term loosely ;))

2001
pick 46 Jarrad Waite
2000
pick 15 Simon Wiggins
1999
pick 73 Ryan Houlihan
1998
pick 38 Brendan Fevola

The draft/s in 1994 were good: Dean Rice, Scott Camporeale, Brad Pearce and Aaron Hamill. Those were the days.

Waite was a F/S selection, and was touted as being a pretty high pick that year, had he not been tied to Carlton.

IMO Vance had the talent; problem was he didn't have the required attitude. Gauging off-field factors is an area clubs have improved on dramatically these days when assessing prospective draft choices.

Massie... I don't know the story behind his departure, but I was aghast when we traded him for Eccles. At the time it was obvious to me Eccles wasn't going to cut it for a long career at AFL level, but the Blues it seems were sucked in by the Premiership Player tag. While not a top-end player, Massie would have made our best 22 every season over the six years.

Agree. I remember that dud, No 20 I think. Here's hoping our new No 10 has more than 1 flag to his name before he's finished.

2002 was the year that we got both Fisher at 72 and Simpson at 45. Probably our only good picks in those few years

Ohhh, Monkey King, why did you have to bring the Massie for Eccles scenario up, my therapy was going so well and Dr Finklestein said I was making such progress......looks like I will be back to 3 appointments per week!! What were Carlton thinking!?!?

Speaking of drafting, interesting listening to the Essendon/North game. Houli is tearing it up at the Dome. He seems to have grown in stature since the Bombers have gained the ascendancy so too early to tell if it is a bit of front running. At the same time Wells has been taken off after a dog of a game. Just a note.
