I hate to think what we have been doing for the past three years.

Treading water.

Financial constraints and draft penalties had a pretty big say in it but still to many recycled players and 'safe' options taken.

Finishing last has blown that wide open and finally things will be done and the recruiting department will be resourced adequately.

Still will wait and see that it is all not PR spin.

Great to see the 'R' word finally being used at Optus Oval. We tried to buck the system way too long and we have paid the price, as have Hawthorn to a certain extent. I certainly hope this means that the younger players will get more game time, particularly in the midfield. I personally do not want to see Kouta playing every minute of every game next season. He needs to be part of the interchange rotation.

I dont think things are as bleak as they seem, we will have a number of quality young players next season :

Walker - Will be 20 next season and ready to blossom
Russell - Still young and needs to put on weight but has good speed and skills.
Murphy - By all reports a gun in the making
Pick 4 - Either of Kennedy, Ryder, Swallow or Hurn - all good potential
Pick 20 - Maybe Varcoe or Lucy
Pick 36 - Maybe a Wade Mills or Ryan Jackson
Blackwell - Good natural footballer who has grown and put on weight.
Raso - Low age pick last year who would have been top 20 this year.
Waite - Possibly going to be a star
Thornton - Our most consistent and reliable defender
Carrazzo - Good BP player who proved later in the year that he can play midfield
Setanta O'Hailpin - Could be a handy Tall Forward that can run and kicks goals.
Simpson - Played some excellent footy in the second half of 2005. Has great pace and agility and will be even better in 06.
Brad Fisher - Great mark and footy smarts - proven already.
Eddie Betts - showed this year that he has the attributes.
Adam Bentick - Ball magnet, tough and good skills.
Adam Hartlett - Tall, good kick, good mark and has a nice agressive streak.

Whilst there is questions marks over the following they are still young enough to become good players:

Justin Davies - tough and gets the ball but needs to become consistent and get more of it.
Trent Sporn - Will do a job, not a game breaker.
Simon Wiggins - Very courageous, determined and has pace but needs to become more damaging.
Luke Livingston - Decision making and skills not great but can do a job in defense.
Adrian De-Luca - If he stays injury free could be a good target up forward.

Alot of our young guys now have 30 - 50 games experience and will start to become good footballers now - If they all click at the same time who knows what can happen.

A good assessment of the youth on our list and I am quietly confident that they will turn things around in time. I was disappointed, though, that in the latter part of this season, when we didn't have much to lose, Pagan did not give enough responsibility to the younger players. Also disappointing was the fact that Jordan Russell was only given 1 game and Luke Blackwell was only going to get a run in Round 22 (unfortunately his jaw was broken in the VFL the previous week). And it took way too long to get Bentick back into the side. This kid has the potential IMO to be as good as Brett Ratten, given his quick hands and as you say him being a ball magnet. He also is a great tackler like Rats was.

Next season hopefully will see the likes of Walks, Simmo, Bentick, Carrots and Blackwell spending lengthy periods in the midfield. They along with Stevo and Scotland will form the backbone of our midfield for the next 5 years. I look forward to Fev, Waite and Fish receiving lots of quality ball from this lot.

I agree - if these guys can all step up then we will be on our way back to the Glory Days!

every club goes through it, it will be worth the wait i think we'll win more games in 2006
just play the young kids in the preseason cup and save the senior players for Rd 1 h&A :) like we use to do,
