Many have said it here and its the right decision for Doc. Hope he can get his body and health right en route to playing early in 2022 and enjoying being back out there doing what he loves.
When do you expect him to be available to play - just your best guess atm

Honestly, seems crazy now but I'm expecting Doc to want to play Round 1. Its all about conditioning for Doc - so if he builds into the preseason and gets a few minutes in the AAMI game... he'd be keen to play as early as possible.

I can see it getting a little too close and Vossy wanting to give him a few more weeks, but I can't see a reason right now he doesn't play Round 1. Especially now that the captaincy load has been taken off his plate.

What position do you see him playing if so? Personally I'd love him on the wing but won't have the pre-season for that

I think he goes back to a more unaccountable role off half-back, floating up to the wing until he gets to full fitness and confidence. I'm not sure about his historically average ball use at times, but his leadership and commitment will lift players. Having guys like Saad and ZW back there now will also reduce his need to feel like he has to do it all, get it 30 times a game and try too hard.

I hope we see a more free and relaxed Doc enjoying his footy. Reality now is that we don't need him to be our 2nd best player - just play a role lift the backline when needed (now with outstanding support from Weiters).

We can't have 3 unaccountable players playing off half-back though:
Doch, Saad & ZW is too many - one of them have to move up to the wing

I don't see Saad as an unaccountable defender. People just look at his aggressive attacking nature (and possibly fall for the * narrative that he didn't want to take a man) and think that means unaccountable footy. His defensive efforts last year were great IMO.
Plus, if we have a more balanced game plan under Voss, with a more team oriented defence, the ball should be slowed more through the middle of the ground when the other team is attacking, which should allow those players more time to gat back into position.

This was the break down. Not impossible, but getting a Round 1 win would be REALLY nice. Not sure I can see us beating Port and I'd think we'd be favourites to beat Freo - been a bit of our bunny recently.

Zero hanger had a go at our best 22.

Best 22
FB: Liam Stocker, Jacob Weitering, Sam Docherty
HB: Adam Saad, Caleb Marchbank, Nic Newman
C: Zac Williams, Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh
HF: Jack Silvagni, Charlie Curnow, Jack Martin
FF: Josh Honey, Harry McKay, Zac Fisher
Fol: Marc Pittonet, Adam Cerra, George Hewett
I/C: Tom De Koning, Ed Curnow, Lewis Young, Mitch McGovern

EMERG: Lachie Plowman, Matt Kennedy, Lachie Fogarty, Will Setterfield

Pretty decent effort, although no Doc and Marchbank to start the season. Young will start on field, surely.

That fwd line is also very tall.

Not enough love for Lachie Plowman.

Backline looks undersized.
But the team as a whole looks too tall.
Weiters, Marchy, Curnow, McKay, Pitto, TDK, Young, Gov and to a lesser extent SOS and Cripps.
Three talls on the bench and they haven't even got Kemp in.

Backline looks undersized.
They've named three tall defenders in Weitering, Marchbank & Young, plus Gov who can swing back. But for some reason they've decided to stack the bench with 3 talls which seems unlikely.

It's actually quite a tall team,
Harry 204
De Koning 203
Pittonet 202
Young 201
Weitering 196
Cripps 195*
Silvagni 194
Marchbank 193
Curnow 192
McGovern 191

Missing from preferred 22:
Kemp 193

Looks like Kemp has to surprise them!

IMO there's no way for Kemp to be missing from our best 22, he'll play every game when is fit.

Robert Walls says Carlton has its best list in a decade. Kiss of death?

  • Likes Voss appointment; he was set up to fail in Bris (too young, too soon), likes his apprentice at PA
  • Voss under more pressure than Mitchell and Macrae as Blues list is further developed
  • Pass mark for Blues is winning more than 50% of matches
  • Thinks Cripps can/should lead the club solo
  • Would make Walsh and Weitering VCs
  • 12 months from now, either Cripps shows he is still the right man for the job or one of Walsh/Weitering take over

I certainly have no problem with it because at some point the players have to accept the expectations that are being bestowed upon them and start consistently winning games of football.

No, it just means that we have our best list in a decade. Because we do. :p

The bar is so low I think I would stub my toes on the way through....
