Just a couple of points after watching last night's game. On the 3 games played so far by Collingwood I would say that they are the most likely to drop out of the top four and possibly the top 6. I know that it's early days but they are just lacking the zip and enthusiasm that they used to have.

It was very noticeable in the first quarter that Carlton hit the ball forward into space whenever they had the opportunity. They certainly didn't let it get tied up in ugly scrums and were very keen to play an open game. After Collingwood were broken Carlton reverted to a traditional game. This is a ploy I think we should use more often rather than trying to drop the ball onto a players chest in the middle of congestion. We have the speed and skill to benefit from this type of play.(eg the third quarter last week).

To start with carlton are much better than I have rated them this year.

The impressive thing to this season's early games is we are seeing the return of the long game with long kicking into the forward line.
This means more high marking and higher scoring games.
Take the Hawks / Pies game and Geelong / Hawks games, for example, where long kicking brought big marking players into the game like Hawkins, Podsiadly, Franklin , Cloke and Dawes....... just real good classy footy.
Look at some of the catches taken by Eddie Betts this year, simply outstanding.

The Freo / Geelong game turned into a shootout that I didn't see coming also.
So it appears to me that the teams looking most like top four are Carlton, Geelong, Hawthorn and Freo who are playing a long game style.

I agree with your thoughts on Collingwood missing the four .
They appeared shellshocked last night, not expecting the long kicking full on attacking game Carlton played.
Collingwood didn't have a plan B last night and at any rate I think carlton, player for player , with that attacking game plan, were much better than the Pies.

In fairness to Collingwood , they've had a tough draw to start the season .
I think the style of play for the high skilled teams teams that Collingwood have played so far , indicates a trend back to traditional and attractive football.

Long kicks, high catches and fast running and bouncing the ball.

There's two players in the comp right now who can run away from opponents, bouncing the ball towards goal and finish off with goals ; him and Hayden Ballantyne .

Hate to say it Ziff but I think the old enemy are, at this stage, looking more likely to fill out the top four rather than our fine selves, only because they have a settled and refined game-plan, which I dont think we'll see a full season of until next year. Love the optimism though.

I didn't see the game, so I'd be interested to know from those who watched - did it seem like they're missing Leon davis? He provided such incredible quality kick ins last year and his run from defence was brilliant, You can't replace a bloke like that. Was the ball getting stuck in they're back half?

The other thought I have is the Malthouse/Buckley factor. The loss of Malthouse is huge and while Bucks was an incredible footballer, there's only a small chance he'll be a great coach. Time will tell I guess and it is only April...

Yeah, no doubt - WC have a nice draw to start the season and will hold that good form through the year. They'll be top 4 before us.

As for the Col-Car game, what frightened me was their very quick fwd structure which looks like it's gone up a gear again this year. When we play them one or more of their small fwds are going to destroy us unless we come up with some sort of way of stopping delivery or something else. Betts had a pretty good time with that strategic front-running thing against us last year and they'll do it again unless we sort something.

betts is gonna kill us when we play them. is there anyone in the league who is a decent small forward stopper?

I can see Carlton kicking 4-5 goals against us from behind kick-ins, with Betts and Garlett waltzing in with 50m runs at the end of the chain. We better kick straight against them or leave numbers in defence.

There's something about Collingwood's style that reminds me of Connolly. They're playing that unaccountable football where players are more concerned about their zone than their opponent. That suits Carlton perfectly - you beat Carlton by putting direct physical pressure on their forwards. Let them run free and they'll cut you to ribbons.

We can bring Grover back to play on Betts again.

Really though I guess Broughton to Betts and Duffield to Garlett would be the best options. Will just need them to have defensive mindset that game and others will have to pick up the slack bringing the ball back out.

Carlton look pretty good at the moment though. We could stop those two and still lose. Hoping we can win the next two to set up a blockbuster in round 5 to see exactly how we are travelling.

Would love to see someone iron out that little irrit Murphy. Happy for us to bring in a steamroller off the rookie list to snipe him into next week. Don't like the cut of his jib one bit.

After living in the USA for a while, this game also taught me that there is a new haircut in fashion with the bogans back home. They need to go to the Fyfe school of hairdressing.

First thing I thought after watching seeing the final score and watching a bit of the replay. We are really going to struggle against Betts and Garlett. Winning the ball through the midfield is going to be crucial.

If we win the Carlton game I'll be absolutely stoked.

Could tell collingwood would struggle this season in Nab cup.
Still will finish 4-6.

Changed gameplan, new coach etc

Collingwood look shocking, but they'll still finish in the 8 because 9/10 of their games are in Melbourne.

Carlton are going to be tough next week, at least we'll get Ballas back though, and Lower, SCOS, Grover should be in the mix too.
